      • Intra-operative Rectal Washout with Saline Solution Can Effectively Prevent Anastomotic Recurrence: a Meta-analysis

        Zhou, Can,Ren, Yu,Wang, Ke,Liu, Jie,He, Jian-Jun,Liu, Pei-Jun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.12

Background and Objective: Rectal washout with saline solution may theoretically prevent anastomotic recurrence in patients with resectable rectal cancer, although exact clinical effects have not yet been determined. In order to derive a more precise estimation of the relationship, the present meta-analysis was performed. Method: Relevant studies were identified by a search of Medline, Embase and Google Website with no restrictions to September 1, 2013, and included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Results: 5 trials (642 participants) were included to assess the association between rectal washout with saline solution and anastomotic recurrence. The rate of anastomotic recurrence (AR) was 6.23% (40/642), with the pooled OR derived from the five studies being 0.32 (95 % CI=0.15-0.70, P=0.004). The pooled OR derived from the TME and radical resection subgroups were 0.72 (95%CI=0.16-3.12, P=0.66) and 0.51 (95%CI=0.13-1.96, P=0.32), respectively. Conclusion: Results from this analysis show that intra-operative rectal washout with mere saline solution largely reduces the risk of anastomotic recurrences in patients with resectable rectal cancer.

Imaging Features of Pediatric Pentastomiasis Infection: a Case Report

        Can Lai,Xi Qun Wang,Long Lin,De Chun Gao,Hong Xi Zhang,Yi Ying Zhang,Yin Bao Zhou 대한영상의학회 2010 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.11 No.4

We report here a case of pentastomiasis infection in a 3-year-old girl who had high fever, abdominal pain, abdominal tension and anemia. Ultrasound scanning of the abdomen revealed disseminated hyperechoic nodules in the liver and a small amount of ascites. Abdominal MRI showed marked hepatomegaly with disseminated miliary nodules of high signal intensity throughout the hepatic parenchyma on T2-weighted images; retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy and disseminated miliary nodules on the peritoneum were also noted. Chest CT showed scattered small hyperdense nodules on both sides of the lungs. The laparoscopy demonstrated diffuse white nodules on the liver surface and the peritoneum. After the small intestinal wall and peritoneal biopsy, histological examination revealed parenchymal tubercles containing several larvae of pentastomids and a large amount of inflammatory cell infiltration around them. The pathological diagnosis was parasitic granuloma from pentastomiasis infection.

The Contribution of Functional Groups in Carbon Nanotube Electrodes to the Electrochemical Performance

        Song-Can Wang,Juan Yang,Xiang-Yang Zhou,Jing Xie 대한금속·재료학회 2014 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.10 No.1

In this paper, carboxylic acid functionalized and aminated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared via mixacid treatment and further amination. In comparison with pristine CNTs, the effect of functional groups on the electrochemical properties was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) suggested that the highly tangled long ropes of CNT were cut into short, open-ended pipes with the corresponding functional groups grafted successfully onto their surfaces. The amount of functional groups was further determined by acid-base titration. Charge-discharge testing and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to characterize the electrochemical behaviors of the samples. It is found that the as-received functional groups, especially the carboxylic groups evidently improved the capacities of the electrodes due to the reversible Faradic reaction. Therefore, functionalized CNTs may be the promising material used in lithium ion batteries to deliver both high reversible capacity and high power capability.

      • Parallel Tempering Simulation on Generalized Canonical Ensemble

        Xu, Shun,Zhou, Xin,Ou-Yang, Zhong-Can Global Science Press 2012 Communications in computational physics Vol.12 No.5

<B>Abstract</B><P>Parallel tempering simulation is widely used in enhanced sampling of systems with complex energy surfaces. We hereby introduce generalized canonical ensemble (GCE) instead of the usual canonical ensemble into the parallel tempering to further improve abilities of the simulation technique. GCE utilizes an adapted weight function to obtain a unimodal energy distribution even in phase-coexisting region and then the parallel tempering on GCE yields the steady swap acceptance rates (SARs) instead of the fluctuated SARs in that on canonical ensemble. With the steady SARs, we can facilitate assign the parameters of the parallel tempering simulation to more efficiently reach equilibrium among different phases. We illustrate the parallel tempering simulation on GCE in the phase-coexisting region of 2-dimensional Potts model, a benchmark system for new simulation method developing. The result indicates that the new parallel tempering method is more efficient to estimate statistical quantities (i.e., to sample the conformational space) than the normal parallel tempering, specially in phase-coexisting regions of larger systems.</P>

      • Socio-economic Factors Influencing Tumor Presentation and Treatment Options in Chinese Breast Cancer Patients

        Wang, Ke,Li, Xiao,Zhou, Can,Ren, Yu,Wang, Xian-Bing,He, Jian-Jun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.1

The impact of income and education level on the clinical and pathologic characteristics, implementation of clinical breast examination (CBE), and treatment patterns of a small population of Chinese female breast cancer patients was studeied in order to provide a theoretical basis and statistical reference for further nationwide research. We included 484 pathologically confirmed female primary breast cancer inpatients of the First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Xi'an Jiaotong University from February 2003 to January 2004. All cases were reviewed and relevant information was collected using a designed case report form (CRF). Chisquare tests, rank-sum tests, and Fisher's exact tests were used in the analysis. Our analysis showed that: (1) women in different occupation groups had significant differences in tumor size, pre-operative mammography, surgical options, post-operative estrogen receptor (ER), progestin receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2) status, and post-operative radiotherapy and chemotherapy (P < 0.05); and (2) women with different education levels had statistically significant differences in tumor size, post-operative ER, PR and Her2 status, and post-operative chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy (P < 0.05). In Xi'an, China, women in low-income occupations or with low education levels are more likely to have advanced tumor stages at presentation, lower implementation rate of clinical breast examination, and less treatment.

Minus-C odorant binding protein TcasOBP7G contributes to reproduction and defense against phytochemical in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum

        Gao Shanshan,Zhang Xinyi,Zhou Can,Zhang Guangyan,Zhang Yong-lei,Li Rui-min,Zhang Kun-peng 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.4

Insect odorant binding proteins (OBPs) paly an important role in the recognition and transmission signals. One odorant binding protein gene, TcasOBP7G, was significantly up-regulated after exposure to eucalyptol. Never theless, the causal role of TcasOBP7G in Tribolium castaneum is still unclear. Here, TcasOBP7G was cloned and characterized from T. castaneum, aligning with the typical characteristic of Minus-C OBPs. The analysis of gene expression profile showed that TcasOBP7G is highly expressed at late larval and adult stage, with particularly high expression levels in ovary and testis of adults, suggesting that TcasOBP7G might be associated with reproduction of T. castaneum. Furthermore, RNAi of TcasOBP7G led to a decrease in spawning, while the development of gonads was normal, suggesting that TcasOBP7G may medicate the reproduction of T. castaneum. Additionally, the mRNA level of TcasOBP7G was significantly increased after exposure to eucalyptol, and knockdown of TcasOBP7G resulted in an increased susceptibility of T. castaneum to eucalyptol, indicating that TcasOBP7G is associated with the tolerance of T. castaneum to eucalyptol. Altogether, these results indicate that TcasOBP7G is required for both reproduction and defense against phytochemical in T. castaneum. This study will provide a theoretical basis for the development of novel control strategies based on the olfaction of insects.

Lactate exacerbates lung damage induced by nanomicroplastic through the gut microbiota–HIF1a/PTBP1 pathway

        Xuan Lihui,Xu Zheng,Luo Jinhua,Yin Wang,Yan Yuhui,Qu Can,Xie Zuozhong,Skonieczna Magdalena,Zhou Ping-Kun,Huang Ruixue 생화학분자생물학회 2023 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.55 No.-

Exposure to nanomicroplastics (nano-MPs) can induce lung damage. The gut microbiota is a critical modulator of the gut–lung axis. However, the mechanisms underlying these interactions have not been elucidated. This study explored the role of lactate, a key metabolite of the microbiota, in the development of lung damage induced by nano-MPs (LDMP). After 28 days of exposure to nano-MPs (50–100 nm), mice mainly exhibited damage to the lungs and intestinal mucosa and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Lactate accumulation was observed in the lungs, intestines and serum and was strongly associated with the imbalance in lactic acid bacteria in the gut. Furthermore, no lactate accumulation was observed in germ-free mice, while the depletion of the gut microbiota using a cocktail of antibiotics produced similar results, suggesting that lactate accumulation in the lungs may have been due to changes in the gut microbiota components. Mechanistically, elevated lactate triggers activation of the HIF1a/PTBP1 pathway, exacerbating nano-MP-induced lung damage through modulation of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Conversely, mice with conditional knockout of Ptbp1 in the lungs (Ptbp1flfl) and PTBP1-knockout (PTBP1-KO) human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells showed reversal of the effects of lactate through modulation of the HIF1a/PTBP1 signaling pathway. These findings indicate that lactate is a potential target for preventing and treating LDMP.

      • <i>Arcticibacter pallidicorallinus</i> sp. nov. isolated from glacier ice

Liu, Qing,Kim, Song-gun,Liu, Hong-can,Xin, Yu-hua,Zhou, Yu-guang International Union of Microbiological Societies 2014 International journal of systematic and evolutiona Vol.64 No.7

<P>A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterium (strain Hh36T) was isolated from the No. 1 glacier in Xinjiang, north-west China. Colonies of strain Hh36T were pink, convex and round on PYG medium plates. Strain Hh36T was able to grow at 4–30 °C and pH 6.0–8.0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Hh36T was related to members of the genus <I>Arcticibacter</I>. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6<I>c</I> and/or C16 : 1ω7<I>c</I>) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 44.0 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, strain Hh36T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus <I>Arcticibacter</I>, for which the name <I>Arcticibacter</I> <I>pallidicorallinus</I> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Hh36T ( = CGMCC 1.9313T = KCTC 32542T).</P>

      • <i>Glaciihabitans tibetensis</i> gen. nov., sp. nov., a psychrotolerant bacterium of the family <i>Microbacteriaceae</i>, isolated from glacier ice water

Li, Ai-Hua,Liu, Hong-Can,Xin, Yu-Hua,Kim, Song-Gun,Zhou, Yu-Guang International Union of Microbiological Societies 2014 International journal of systematic and evolutiona Vol.64 No.2

<P>A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming, short-rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain MP203T, was isolated from ice water of Midui Glacier in Tibet Autonomous Region, China. The strain was psychrotolerant, growing at 0–25 °C. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain MP203T was most similar to <I>Frigoribacterium faeni</I> NBRC 103066T, <I>Compostimonas suwonensis</I> KACC 13354T, <I>Frigoribacterium mesophilum</I> KCTC 19311T, <I>Marisediminicola antarctica</I> CCTCC AB 209077T and <I>Alpinimonas psychrophila</I> JCM 18951T, with similarities of 97.4, 97.2, 97.2, 97.1 and 97.1 %, respectively. The maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree indicated that strain MP203T clustered with nine genera of the family <I>Microbacteriaceae</I>, namely <I>Frigoribacterium</I>, <I>Compostimonas</I>, <I>Marisediminicola</I>, <I>Alpinimonas</I>, <I>Frondihabitans</I>, <I>Clavibacter</I>, <I>Subtercola</I>, <I>Klugiella</I> and <I>Agreia</I><I>.</I> However, bootstrap analysis showed that there was no significance in the branching pattern of the linage comprising strain MP203T and any existing generic lineage of the family <I>Microbacteriaceae</I>. DNA–DNA hybridization results indicated levels of relatedness between strain MP203T and <I>Marisediminicola antarctica</I> CCTCC AB 209077T, <I>Frigoribacterium faeni</I> NBRC 103066T, <I>Frigoribacterium mesophilum</I> KCTC 19311T, <I>Compostimonas suwonensis</I> KACC 13354T and <I>Alpinimonas psychrophila</I> JCM 18951T were 25.8±7.3, 29.6±7.6, 19.7±6.7, 16.0±4.2 and 12.4±5.1 % (mean±<SMALL>sd</SMALL>), respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 64.1 mol%. Analysis of the cell-wall peptidoglycan revealed that the peptidoglycan structure of strain MP203T was B10 type with Gly[<SMALL>l</SMALL>-Hse]–<SMALL>d</SMALL>-Glu–<SMALL>d</SMALL>-DAB, containing 2, 4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) as a diagnostic amino acid. The cell-wall sugars were rhamnose, ribose, mannose and glucose. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso A-C15 : 1. An unusual compound identified as anteiso-C15 : 0-DMA (1, 1-dimethoxy-anteiso-pentadecane) was also present in strain MP203T. The predominant menaquinone was MK-10. Diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), one unknown glycolipid and four unknown lipids were detected in the polar lipid extracts. As strain MP203T was distinguishable from phylogenetically related genera in the family <I>Microbacteriaceae</I> in terms of its physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic position, it was considered to represent a novel species of a new genus. Thus, the name <I>Glaciihabitans tibetensis</I> gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of <I>Glaciihabitans tibetensis</I> is MP203T ( = CGMCC 1.12484T = KCTC 29148T).</P>
