      • Effect of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles on a carbonyl iron based magnetorheological suspension

Dong, Yu Zhen,Piao, Shang Hao,Zhang, Ke,Choi, Hyoung Jin Elsevier 2018 Colloids and surfaces. A, Physicochemical and engi Vol.537 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were successfully fabricated by a non-aqueous hydrothermal method and used as an additive in a micron-sized, carbonyl iron (CI) based-magnetorheological (MR) fluid to improve its dispersion stability and MR characteristics. The morphology and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4 were demonstrated by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results showed that CoFe2O4 was synthesized successfully with a nearly spherical morphology and excellent crystalline structure. The saturation magnetization (Ms) of the CoFe2O4 was also about 74.4 emu/g. The CI MR fluid was prepared by dispersing 50wt% of CI particles in silicone oil, and the CI/CoFe2O4 MR fluid was prepared by adding 0.1wt% of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles to the CI MR fluid. The MR characteristics of both MR fluids were tested via a rotational rheometer at various magnetic field strengths. The CI/CoFe2O4 MR fluid showed enhanced MR characteristics with higher yield stress, shear viscosity, and dynamic modulus than that of the CI MR fluid. Furthermore, the dispersion stability of both MR fluids were also investigated via a Turbiscan optical analyzer system, and these results showed that the sedimentation ratio after 24h had improved by about 21%.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>Magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were successfully fabricated by a non-aqueous hydrothermal method and used as an additive in a micron-sized, carbonyl iron (CI) based-magnetorheological (MR) fluid. Raman Lidar for the Measurement of Temperature, Water Vapor, and Aerosol in Beijing in the Winter of 2014

        Min Tan,Zhen Shang,Chenbo Xie,Hui Ma,Qian Deng,Xiaomin Tian,Peng Zhuang,Zhanye Zhang,Yingjian Wang 한국광학회 2018 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.2 No.1

To measure atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and aerosol simultaneously, an efficient multi-function Raman lidar using an ultraviolet-wavelength laser has been developed. A high-performance spectroscopic box that utilizes multicavity interference filters, mounted sequentially at small angles of incidence, is used to separate the lidar return signals at different wavelengths, and to extract the signals with high efficiency. The external experiments are carried out for simultaneous detection of atmospheric temperature, water vapor, and aerosol extinction coefficient in Beijing, under clear and hazy weather conditions. The vertical profiles of temperature, water vapor, and aerosol extinction coefficient are analyzed. The results show that for an integration time of 5 min and laser energy of 200 mJ, the mean deviation between measurements obtained by lidar and radiosonde is small, and the overall trend is similar. The statistical temperature error for nighttime is below 1 K up to a height of 6.2 km under clear weather conditions, and up to a height of 2.5 km under slightly hazy weather conditions, with 5 min of observation time. An effective range for simultaneous detection of temperature and water vapor of up to 10 km is achieved. The temperature-inversion layer is found in the low troposphere. Continuous observations verify the reliability of Raman lidar to achieve real-time measurement of atmospheric parameters in the troposphere.

Synergistic Effects of Leflunomide and Benazepril in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Nephropathy

        Jin, Hua,Piao, Shang Guo,Jin, Ji Zhe,Jin, Ying Shun,Cui, Zhen Hua,Jin, Hai Feng,Zheng, Hai Lan,Li, Jin Ji,Jiang, Yu Ji,Yang, Chul Woo,Li, Can S.Karger 2014 The Nephron Journals Vol.126 No.3

<P>Abstract</P><P><B><I>Background:</I></B> Leflunomide (LEF) and benazepril have renoprotective effects on diabetic nephropathy (DN) through their anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic activities. This study investigated whether combined treatment using LEF and benazepril affords superior protection compared with the respective monotherapies. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> Diabetes was induced with streptozotocin (STZ, 65 mg/kg) by intraperitoneal injection in male Wistar rats. Two weeks after STZ injection, diabetic rats were treated daily for 12 weeks with LEF (10 mg/kg), benazepril (10 mg/kg), or a combination of both. Basic parameters (body weight, fasting blood glucose level, and 24 h urinary protein excretion), histopathology, inflammatory [inflammatory cell infiltration (ED-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and Toll-like receptor-2 (TLR-2)] and glomerulosclerotic factors [transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF)], and oxidative stress (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG) were studied. <B><I>Results:</I></B> Benazepril or LEF treatment significantly prevented body weight loss and 24 h urinary protein excretion induced by diabetes; combined treatment with LEF and benazepril further improved these parameters compared with giving each drug alone (all p < 0.01). Increased expression of inflammatory (MCP-1 and TLR-2) and glomerulosclerotic (TGF-β1 and CTGF) factors in diabetic rat kidney was reduced by treatment with either LEF or benazepril and was further reduced by the combined administration of the two drugs (p < 0.01). These effects were accompanied by suppression of urinary 8-OHdG excretion. There was no significant between-group difference in blood glucose level. <B><I>Conclusions:</I></B> LEF treatment lessens DN, and combined treatment with LEF and benazepril provides synergistic effects in preventing DN.</P><P>© 2014 S. Characteristics and Comparisons of Morphometric Measurements and Computed Tomography Hounsfield Unit Values of C2 Laminae for Translaminar Screw Placement Between Patients With and Without Basilar Invagination

        Lu-Ping Zhou,Jin Shang,Zhi-Gang Zhang,Zhen-Fei Jiang,Hua-Qing Zhang,Chong-Yu Jia,Ren-Jie Zhang,Cai-Liang Shen 대한척추신경외과학회 2022 Neurospine Vol.19 No.4

Objective: Patients with basilar invagination (BI) had high incidences of vertebral variations and high-riding vertebral artery (HRVA) that might restrict the use of pedicle or pars screw and increase the use of translaminar screw on axis. Here, we conducted a radiographic study to investigate the feasibility of translaminar screws and the bone quality of C2 laminae in patients with BI, which were compared with those without BI as control to provide guidelines for safe placement. Methods: In this study, a total of 410 patients (205 consecutive patients with BI and 205 matched patients without BI) and 820 unilateral laminae of the axis were included at a 1:1 ratio. Comparisons with regard to insertion parameters (laminar length, thickness, angle, and height) for C2 translaminar screw placement and Hounsfield unit (HU) values for the assessment of the appropriate bone mineral density of C2 laminae between BI and control groups were performed. Besides, the subgroup analyses based on the Goel A and B classification of BI, HRVA, atlas occipitalization, and C2/3 assimilation were also carried out. Furthermore, the factors that might affect the insertion parameters and HU values were explored through multiple linear regression analyses. Results: The BI group showed a significantly smaller laminar length, thickness, height, and HU value than the control group, whereas no significant difference was observed regarding the laminar angle. By contrast, the control group showed significantly higher rates of acceptability for unilateral and bilateral translaminar screw fixations than the BI group. Subgroup analyses showed that the classification of Goel A and B, HRVA, atlas occipitalization, and C2/3 assimilation affected the insertion parameters except the HU values. Multiple linear regression indicated that the laminar length was significantly associated with the male gender (B = 0.190, p < 0.001), diagnoses of HRVA (B = -0.109, p < 0.001), Goel A (B = -0.167, p < 0.001), and C2/3 assimilation (B = -0.079, p = 0.029); the laminar thickness was significantly associated with the male gender (B = 0.353, p < 0.001), diagnoses of HRVA (B = -0.430, p < 0.001), Goel B (B = -0.249, p = 0.026), and distance from the top of odontoid to the Chamberlain line (B = -0.025, p = 0.003); laminar HU values were significantly associated with age (B = -2.517, p < 0.001), Goel A (B = -44.205, p < 0.001), Goel B (B = -25.704, p = 0.014), and laminar thickness (B = -11.706, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Patients with BI had narrower and smaller laminae with lower HU values and lower unilateral and bilateral acceptability for translaminar screws than patients without BI. Preoperative 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography were needed for BI patients.

      • Value of Postoperative Radiation Therapy for Regional Control after Dissection in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cases

        Li, Xiao-Ming,Di, Bin,Shang, Yao-Dong,Tao, Zhen-Feng,Cheng, Ji-Min,He, Zhan-Guo Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.7

Objective: We aimed to define clinicopathologic risk factors associated with regional recurrence (RR) and thus the effectiveness of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) for neck control for head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) with differing cervical lymph node status. Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 196 HNSCC patients with pathologically positive neck node (N+) to evaluate the high-risk factors for RR and to define the role of PORT in control after neck dissection and postoperative radiotherapy (PORT). Results: Overall, the RR rate after neck dissection and PORT was 29%. Extracapsular spread (ECS) was confirmed to be the only independent risk factor for RR. There were no significant risk factors associated with RR in the ECS- group. The 5-year disease-specific survival rate was 45%, which descended to 10% with the emergence of RR. Conclusions: ECS remains a determined risk factor for RR after neck dissection and PORT in patients with N+. PORT alone is not adequate for preventing RR in the neck with ECS after neck dissection. More intensive postoperative adjuvant therapies, especially combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are needed to prevent regional failure in HNSCC patients with ECS.

      • Hsp90 Inhibitor Geldanamycin Enhances the Antitumor Efficacy of Enediyne Lidamycin in Association with Reduced DNA Damage Repair

Han, Fei-Fei,Li, Liang,Shang, Bo-Yang,Shao, Rong-Guang,Zhen, Yong-Su Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.17

Inhibition of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) leads to inappropriate processing of proteins involved in DNA damage repair pathways after DNA damage and may enhance tumor cell radio- and chemotherapy sensitivity. To investigate the potentiation of antitumor efficacy of lidamycin (LDM), an enediyne agent by the Hsp90 inhibitorgeldanamycin (GDM), and possible mechanisms, we have determined effects on ovarian cancer SKOV-3, hepatoma Bel-7402 and HepG2 cells by MTT assay, apoptosis assay, and cell cycle analysis. DNA damage was investigated with H2AX C-terminal phosphorylation (${\gamma}H2AX$) assays. We found that GDM synergistically sensitized SKOV-3 and Bel-7402 cells to the enediyne LDM, and this was accompanied by increased apoptosis. GDM pretreatment resulted in a greater LDM-induced DNA damage and reduced DNA repair as compared with LDM alone. However, in HepG2 cells GDM did not show significant sensitizing effects both in MTT assay and in DNA damage repair. Abrogation of LDM-induced $G_2/M$ arrest by GDM was found in SKOV-3 but not in HepG2 cells. Furthermore, the expression of ATM, related to DNA damage repair responses, was also decreased by GDM in SKOV-3 and Bel-7402 cells but not in HepG2 cells. These results demonstrate that Hsp90 inhibitors may potentiate the antitumor efficacy of LDM, possibly by reducing the repair of LDM-induced DNA damage.

The earth mover’s distance and Bayesian linear discriminant analysis for epileptic seizure detection in scalp EEG

        Shasha Yuan,Jinxing Liu,Junliang Shang,Xiangzhen Kong,Qi Yuan,Zhen Ma 대한의용생체공학회 2018 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.8 No.4

Since epileptic seizure is unpredictable and paroxysmal, an automatic system for seizure detecting could be of greatsignificance and assistance to patients and medical staff. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for multichannel patientspecificseizure detection applying the earth mover’s distance (EMD) in scalp EEG. Firstly, the wavelet decomposition isexecuted to the original EEGs with five scales, the scale 3, 4 and 5 are selected and transformed into histograms andafterwards the distances between histograms in pairs are computed applying the earth mover’s distance as effectivefeatures. Then, the EMD features are sent to the classifier based on the Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (BLDA) forclassification, and an efficient postprocessing procedure is applied to improve the detection system precision, finally. Toevaluate the performance of the proposed method, the CHB-MIT scalp EEG database with 958 h EEG recordings from 23epileptic patients is used and a relatively satisfactory detection rate is achieved with the average sensitivity of 95.65% andfalse detection rate of 0.68/h. The good performance of this algorithm indicates the potential application for seizuremonitoring in clinical practice.
