Right-to-Left Displacement of an Airgun Lead Bullet after Transorbital Entry into the Skull Complicated by Posttraumatic Epilepsy : A Case Report

        Chao-bin Wang,Hui Wang,Jun-shuang Zhao,Ze-jun Wu,Hao-dong Liu,Chao-jia Wang,An-rong Li,Dawei Wang,Juntao Hu 대한신경외과학회 2023 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.66 No.5

Penetrating head injury is a serious open cranial injury. In civilians, it is often caused by non-missile, low velocity flying objects that penetrate the skull through a weak cranial structure, forming intracranial foreign bodies. The intracranial foreign body can be displaced due to its special quality, shape, and location. In this paper, we report a rare case of right-to-left displacement of an airgun lead bullet after transorbital entry into the skull complicated by posttraumatic epilepsy, as a reminder to colleagues that intracranial metal foreign bodies maybe displaced intraoperatively. In addition, we have found that the presence of intracranial metallic foreign bodies may be a factor for the posttraumatic epilepsy, and their timely removal appears to be beneficial for epilepsy control.

Arterial Spin Labeling Perfusion MRI Signal Processing Through Traditional Methods and Machine Learning

Ze Wang 대한자기공명의과학회 2022 Investigative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Vol.26 No.4

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion MRI is a non-invasive technique for quantifying and mapping cerebral blood flow (CBF). Depending on the tissue signal change after magnetically labeled arterial blood enters the brain tissue, ASL MRI signal can be affected by several factors, including the volume of arrived arterial blood, signal decay of labeled blood, physiological fluctuations of the brain and CBF, and head motion, etc. Some of them can be controlled using sophisticated state-of-art ASL MRI sequences, but the others can only be resolved with post-processing strategies. Over the decades, various postprocessing methods have been proposed in the literature, and many post-processing software packages have been released. This self-contained review provides a brief introduction to ASL MRI, recommendations for typical ASL MRI data acquisition protocols, an overview of the ASL data processing pipeline, and an introduction to typical methods used at each step in the pipeline. Although the main focus is on traditional heuristic model-based methods, a brief introduction to recent machine learning-based approaches is provided too.

Evacuation Travel Behavior in Regret Minimization or Utility Maximization Rules? Evidence from Emergency Context

        Ze Wang,Shi An,Jian Wang,Chuan Ding 대한토목학회 2017 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.21 No.1

The aim of this paper is to compare Random Regret Minimization (RRM) and Random Utility Maximization (RUM) paradigms in emergency evacuation decision application. Three models including utility model, regret model, and hybrid utility-regret model are formulated, respectively. A Stated Preference (SP) survey on evacuation route choice under emergency was conducted to obtain the evacuees’ trade-off among average travel time, travel time uncertainty, perceived road damage probability, and perceived service level. The estimation reveals that regret-based model performs better than utility-based model. The differences between RRM and RUM in emergency context are substantial in model fit when compared with previous empirical results under non-emergency state. Specifically, the model also explains the influence of determining factors related to evacuees’ socio-demographics on their route decisions. Further, considering the road damage probability as a predominant factor, Value of Damage (VOD) is proposed to reveal the unobserved regret aversion psychology. Direct elasticity and cross elasticity are calculated for the hybrid utility-regret model. Regret increases in the emergency scenario, supporting that the advantage of RRM paradigm to explain evacuation route choices. The study is expected to give a better understanding of evacuation route choice behavior for emergency actions.

Deubiquitinating enzyme Josephin-2 stabilizes PHGDH to promote a cancer stem cell phenotype in hepatocellular carcinoma

        Wang Ying,Li Ze-Xin,Wang Jian-Guo,Li Lu-Hao,Shen Wen-Long,Dang Xiao-Wei 한국유전학회 2023 Genes & Genomics Vol.45 No.2

Background Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) have been shown to be possible targets for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. Objective This study was designed to reveal the effect and underlying mechanism of Josephin-2, a relatively newly defined DUB, in HCC progression. Methods SNU-387 and PLC/PRF/5 cells were used for in vitro functional assays. The levels of Josephin-2 and phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) were determined using RT-qPCR and western blotting. Cell proliferation, migration and invasion were assessed by CCK-8, colony formation and Transwell. Spheroid-forming assay was performed to assess the cancer stem cell (CSC)-phenotype of HCC cells. A xenograft mice model was applied to verify the effect of Josephin-2 on HCC cell growth in vivo. Results Herein, we showed that Josephin-2 expression was negatively correlated with HCC patient survival in data from the online database. Cell experiments indicated that knockdown of Josephin-2 attenuated HCC cell malignant biological behaviors. Besides, Josephin-2 silencing also decreased the spheroid-formation while inhibited the expression of CSC biomarkers (CD133, OCT4, SOX2 and EpCAM) in HCC cells. Mechanistically, Josephin-2 had a deubiquitinating activity towards the regulation of PHGDH protein, the rate-limiting enzyme in the first step of serine biosynthesis pathway. Depletion of Josephin-2 enhanced the ubiquitination degradation of PHGDH and ultimately inhibited the proliferation and CSC-phenotype of HCC in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion Our work uncovered the regulatory effects of Josephin-2 on PHGDH protein stability and profiled its contribution in HCC malignant progression, which might provide a potential therapeutic target for HCC.

Finding Blue Tracks in Gephyrocharax melanocheir Fish Similar to the Locations of Acupuncture Meridians after Injecting Alcian Blue

        Ze Wang,Wei-Bo Zhang,Shuyong Jia,Yu-Ying Tian,Guang-Jun Wang,Hongyan Lin 사단법인약침학회 2015 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.8 No.6

This study investigated whether a meridian-like distribution of Alcian blue (AB) existed after it was injected into a fish's body and suggested a new animal model for meridian study. Twenty Gephyrocharax melanocheir fish with translucent bodies were injected with AB at a point near the spinal column or the dorsal fin. Distribution of AB was observed using a digital camera and a stereomicroscope. Three or more obvious blue tracks were found: one along the spinal column, another along the posterior margin of the abdomen extending to the superior margin of the anal fin, and a third along both sides of the dorsal fin. They were similar to the locations of the governor, conceptual vessel, and urinary bladder meridians, respectively, on the human body according to the classic theory of traditional Chinese medicine. A few other blue tracks were also found, which apparently did not correspond to any known meridians. The results show that the tracks of AB share important similarities with the locations of classically described meridians and that they are mainly distributed in the interstitial space around bones and blood vessels and inside muscular interstices. This study may provide a new experimental animal model for exploring acupuncture meridians.

      • Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Awareness, Acceptability, and Decision-Making Factors among Chinese College Students

        Wang, Shao-Ming,Zhang, Shao-Kai,Pan, Xiong-Fei,Ren, Ze-Fang,Yang, Chun-Xia,Wang, Zeng-Zhen,Gao, Xiao-Hong,Li, Man,Zheng, Quan-Qing,Ma, Wei,Zhao, Fang-Hui,Qiao, You-Lin,Sivasubramaniam, Priya Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.7

Background: College students are recommended as the target groups for catch-up human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Systematical exploration of awareness, acceptability, and decision-making factors of HPV vaccination among Chinese college students has been limited. Materials and Methods: A multi-center survey was conducted in mainland China between November 2011 and May 2012. College students aged 18-22 years were stratified by their grade, gender, and major for sampling. Socio-demographic and HPV-related information such as knowledge, perceptions, acceptability, and attitudes were collected through a questionnaire. Results: A total of 3,497 undergraduates completed the questionnaire, among which 1,686 were males. The acceptability of the HPV vaccine was high (70.8%). Undergraduates from high-level universities, at lower grade, or with greater prior knowledge of HPV vaccines showed higher acceptability of HPV vaccination ($p_{trend}$ <0.001). Additionally, undergraduates with vaccination experience outside the National Expanded Program on Immunization (OR=1.29; 95%CI: 1.10-1.51) or fear of HPV-related diseases (OR=2.79; 95%CI: 2.28-3.41) were more willing to accept HPV vaccination. General knowledge of HPV vaccine was low among undergraduates, and safety was a major concern (71.05%). The majority of students wished to pay less than 300RMB for HPV vaccine and chose the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention as the most appropriate venue for vaccination. Conclusions: Although most undergraduates demonstrate positive attitudes towards HPV vaccination, challenges pertaining to introduction exist in China. Corresponding proactive education and governmental subsidy to do so are urgently needed by this age-group population. Suggestions and potential strategies indicated may help shape the future HPV vaccination program in China.

In-situ hydrodeoxygenation of furfural to furans over supported Ni catalysts in aqueous solution

        Ze Wang,Zhaolin Fu,Weigang Lin,Songgeng Li,Wenli Song 한국화학공학회 2019 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.36 No.8

In-situ hydrodeoxygenation of furfural as a representative component in bio-oil was investigated in aqueous solution over supported Ni catalysts, for preparing furans as an antiknock additive. The addition of methanol, ethanol, or isopropanol was found inhibitive to coke formation at 220 oC. When using methanol as the hydrogen donor and coke inhibitor, the support in mesoporous structure with moderate acidity was more favorable to the conversion of furfural and to the formation of furans. An increased loading amount of Ni facilitated the generation of deep hydrogenated products. The conversion of furfural could hardly be changed under different methanol to water ratios, while the product distribution varied remarkably. Under optimized conditions, the summary yield of furan and 2-methylfuran reached to above 85%. On the basis of optimized reaction conditions, the in-situ hydrodeoxygenation of an eight-component synthetic bio-oil was tested, and the results verified the adaptability of the method for conversion of bio-oil.

Electric power generation from treatment of food waste leachate using microbial fuel cell

Ze Jie Wang,Bong Su Lim 대한환경공학회 2017 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.22 No.2

Simultaneous treatment of food waste leachate and power generation was investigated in an air-cathode microbial fuel cell. A TCOD removal efficiency of 95.4 ± 0.3% was achieved for an initial COD concentration of 2,860 mg/L. Maximum power density ranged was maximized at 1.86 W/m³, when COD concentration varied between 60 mg/L and 2,860 mg/L. Meanwhile, columbic efficiency was determined between 1.76% and 11.07% for different COD concentrations. Cyclic voltammetric data revealed that the oxidation peak voltage occurred at -0.20 V, shifted to about -0.25 V. Moreover, a reduction peak voltage at -0.45 V appeared when organic matters were exhausted, indicating that reducible matters were produced during the decomposition of organic matters. The results showed that it was feasible to use food waste leachate as a fuel for power generation in a microbial fuel cell, and the treatment efficiency of the wastewater was satisfied.

      • Macrophage-secreted Exosomes Delivering miRNA-21 Inhibitor can Regulate BGC-823 Cell Proliferation

        Wang, Jian-Jun,Wang, Ze-You,Chen, Rui,Xiong, Jing,Yao, Yong-Liang,Wu, Jian-Hong,Li, Guang-Xin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.10

Exosomes, membranous nanovesicles, naturally carry bio-macromolecules or miRNA and play impoetant roles in tumor pathogenesis. Here, we showed that macrophages cell-derived exosomes can function as vehicles to deliver exogenous miR-21 inhibitor into BGC-823 gastric cancer cells. Exosomes loaded with miR-21inhibitor significantly increased miR-21 levels in BGC-823, but miR-21inhibitor loaded in exosomes exerted an opposite effect. miRNA transfected with exosomes had less cellular toxicity to host cells compared to conventional transfection methods. The miR-21inhibitor loaded exosomes promoted the migration ability and reduced apoptosis of BGC-823 gastric cancer cells. These observations indicate that miR-21 acts as a tumor promoter by targeting the PDCD4 gene and preventing apoptosis of gastric cancer cells through inhibition of PDCD4 expression. Furthermore, exosome -mediated miR-21 inhibitor delivery resulted in functionally more efficient inhibition and less cellular toxicity compared to conventional transfection methods. Similar approaches could be useful in modification of target biomolecules in vitro and in vivo. These findings contribute to our understanding of the functions of miR-21 and exosomes as a carrier for therapy of gastric cancer.
