        Two-Photon Absorption Properties of 2,6-Bis(styryl)anthracene Derivatives: Effects of Donor–Acceptor Substituents and the π Center

        <P>A series of 2,6- and 2,7-bis(styryl)anthracene derivatives with the donors at the styryl group and acceptors at the 9,10-positions have been synthesized, and their two-photon cross sections (Φδ<SUB>max</SUB>) were determined. These compounds exhibit a peak two-photon absorptivity (δ<SUB>max</SUB>) in the range of 700–2500 GM at 780–1030 nm. Values of λ<SUB>max</SUB> and Stokes shifts increase as the acceptor is changed to a stronger one. There is also a parallel increase in <TEX>${\lambda {{(2)\hfill \atop {\rm max}\hfill}}}$</TEX> and δ<SUB>max</SUB> with the same variation of the chromophore structure. Both <TEX>${\lambda {{(2)\hfill \atop {\rm max}\hfill}}}$</TEX> and Φδ<SUB>max</SUB> have been optimized by introducing donor-substituted styryl groups at the 2,6-positions and p-cyanophenyl groups at the 9,10-positions, respectively.         <P>Isocitrate dehydrogenase mutations with neomorphic activity of converting α-ketoglutarate to 2-hydroxyglutarate have been found in many types of cancers. We report an NMR-based assay specific for the mutant using <SUP>13</SUP>C<SUB>4</SUB>-labeled α-ketoglutarate. It can be done in a complex mixture without extraction, give time-dependent absolute quantitation, and be applied to enzyme inhibition studies.         Prevalence of Spina Bifida Occulta and Its Relationship With Overactive Bladder in Middle-Aged and Elderly Chinese People

        Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of spina bifida occulta (SBO) and its relationship with the presence of overactive bladder (OAB) in middle-aged and elderly people in China. Methods: A cross-sectional community-based survey was carried out at 7 communities in Zhengzhou City, China from December 15, 2013 to June 10, 2014, where residents aged over 40 years were randomly selected to participate. All of the participants underwent lumbosacral radiographic analysis and relevant laboratory tests. A questionnaire including basic information, past medical history and present illness, and the OAB symptom score was filled out by all participants. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used for data analysis with a P-value of <0.05 denoting statistical significance. Results: A total of 1,061 subjects were qualified for the final statistical analysis (58.8±11.7 years; male, 471 [44.4%]; female, 590 [55.6%]). The overall prevalence of SBO was 15.1% (160 of 1,061): 18.3% (86 of 471) in men and 12.5% (74 of 590) in women. Among these subjects, 13.7% (145 of 1,061) had OAB: 13.2% (62 of 471) in men and 14.1% (83 of 590) in women. The results of logistic regression showed that age, SBO, history of cerebral infarction (HCI), and constipation were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while sex, history of childhood enuresis (HCE), body mass index (BMI), and diabetes mellitus (DM) were not (P>0.05). In men, age, SBO, and constipation were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while HCE, BMI, DM, HCI, and benign prostate hyperplasia were not (P>0.05). In women, age, SBO, and HCI were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while HCE, BMI, DM, vaginal delivery, and constipation were not (P>0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of SBO is high and it is related to OAB in middle-aged and elderly people in China.

      • Glucose-derived acetate and ACSS2 as key players in cisplatin resistance in bladder cancer

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Cisplatin is an important chemotherapeutic agent against metastatic bladder cancer, but resistance often limits its usage. With the recent recognition of lipid metabolic alterations in bladder cancers, we studied the metabolic implications of cisplatin resistance using cisplatin-sensitive (T24S) and resistant (T24R) bladder cancer cells. Real-time live metabolomics revealed that T24R cells consume more glucose, leading to higher production of glucose-derived acetate and fatty acids. Along with the activation of general metabolic regulators, enzymes involved in acetate usage (ACSS2) and fatty acid synthesis (ACC) and a precursor for fatty acid synthesis (acetyl-CoA) were elevated in T24R cells. Consistently, metabolic analysis with <SUP>13</SUP>C isotope revealed that T24R cells preferred glucose to acetate as the exogenous carbon source for the increased fatty acid synthesis, contrary to T24S cells. In addition, ACSS2, rather than the well-established ACLY, was the key enzyme that supplies acetyl-CoA in T24R cells through glucose-derived endogenous acetate. The relevance of ACSS2 in cisplatin resistance was further confirmed by the abrogation of resistance by an ACSS2 inhibitor and, finally, by the higher expression of ACSS2 in the patient tissues with cisplatin resistance.       • A lithium–oxygen battery based on lithium superoxide

        <P>Batteries based on sodium superoxide and on potassium superoxide have recently been reported(1-3). However, there have been no reports of a battery based on lithium superoxide (LiO2), despite much research(4-8) into the lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) battery because of its potential high energy density. Several studies(9-16) of Li-O-2 batteries have found evidence of LiO2 being formed as one component of the discharge product along with lithium peroxide (Li2O2). In addition, theoretical calculations have indicated that some forms of LiO2 may have a long lifetime(17). These studies also suggest that it might be possible to form LiO2 alone for use in a battery. However, solid LiO2 has been difficult to synthesize in pure form(18) because it is thermodynamically unstable with respect to disproportionation, giving Li2O2 (refs 19, 20). Here we show that crystalline LiO2 can be stabilized in a Li-O-2 battery by using a suitable graphene-based cathode. Various characterization techniques reveal no evidence for the presence of Li2O2. A novel templating growth mechanism involving the use of iridium nanoparticles on the cathode surface may be responsible for the growth of crystalline LiO2. Our results demonstrate that the LiO2 formed in the Li-O-2 battery is stable enough for the battery to be repeatedly charged and discharged with a very low charge potential (about 3.2 volts). We anticipate that this discovery will lead to methods of synthesizing and stabilizing LiO2, which could open the way to high-energy-density batteries based on LiO2 as well as to other possible uses of this compound, such as oxygen storage.</P>

      • Mechanisms of Hela Cell Apoptosis Induced by Abnormal Savda Munziq Total Phenolics Combined with Chemotherapeutic Agents

        Objective: To investigate the effects of abnormal Savda Munziq (ASMq) total phenolics combined with cisplatin and docetaxel on the Hela cell growth. Methods: In vivo cultured Hela cells were treated with cisplatin, docetaxel, total phenolics, cisplatin+total phenolics or docetaxel+total phenolics. MTT was performed to assess inhibition of cell proliferation, flow cytometry to detect apoptosis, and semi-quantitative RT-PCR to test for survivin and Bcl-2 expression. Results: The total phenolics, cisplatin and docetaxel had significant inhibitory and apoptosis-promoting effects on Hela cells (P<0.05), with the early apoptotic rates of $12.8{\pm}0.70%$, $18.9{\pm}3.79%$ and $15.8{\pm}3.8%$; the total phenolics, cisplatin and docetaxel significantly decreased the expression of Bcl-2 and survivin (all P<0.01), especially when used in combination. Conclusion: ASMq total phenolics, combined with cisplatin and docetaxel, could promote the apoptosis of Hela cells possibly through reducing the expression of Bcl-2 and survivin.

        Genetic diversity and origin of Dendrothrips minowai (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Guizhou, China

        In this study, we explored the population genetics of Dendrothrips minowai Priesner, one of themost destructive horticultural pests, in Guizhou Province of China. We have analyzed the data of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences of D. minowai from 27 populations sampled over two years in Guizhou. The results confirmed that the thrips retained moderate levels of genetic diversity (including number of haplotypes, haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity). Three population groups could be identified according to spatial analysis of molecular variance (SAMOVA). A similar tendency was found according to phylogenetic trees. The AMOVA revealed that N52% and 38% of variationwas attributed to groups and individualswithin populations, respectively. Gene flow among populations, estimated using the coalescent method, was relatively high (M = 196.8–825.4). Star-like networks and the demographic analysis (including neutrality testing and mismatch distribution) indicated that thrips underwent a recent population expansion in Guizhou and began to diverge in the Late Pleistocene. The results provided evidence that the eastern region of Guizhou was the source area for the species.

        중식 패스트푸드 포장용기 디자인 제안

        광고로서 중요한 역할을 하는 포장용기에 주목하여, 일반적인 패스트푸드 포장용기 형태를 벗어난 다양한 음식을 종류별로 담을 수 있는 중식 패스트푸드 포장용기 디자인 제안을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 중국 O2O(Online to Offline)음식 배달 시스템의 운영모델과 중식 패스트푸드의 개념 및 분류에 대한 관련 문헌 조사를 통해 전반적인 이론적 고찰을 수행하였으며, 현재 사용 중인 중식 패스트푸드의 포장용기에 대한 조사와 중식 패스트푸드 포장용기에 적용 가능한 포장용기디자인 분석을 바탕으로, 소비자 설문조사 결과를 종합하여 포장용기의 디자인 요소를 도출하고, 이를 기반으로 최종적으로 중국 O2O 음식 배달 시스템에 적합한 중식 패스트푸드 포장용기의 디자인을 제안하였다. 본 연구과정을 통해 도출한 디자인 방안은 기존 포장용기와 달리, 포장용기 디자인의 기능, 소재, 형태와 색상 등 4개 디자인 요소 관점에서 출발하여 포장용기의 내부구조 개선으로 공간을 최대한 절약하였으며 아울러 친환경 재료를 사용하여 환경오염을 줄였다. 또한 중국 고대 전통 찬합(饌盒)의 형태를 포장용기 디자인에 적용하여 중국 현지에서 중식 패스트푸드 포장용기에 적용하는데 거부감 없게 하였고, 음식 맛의 종류를 색상으로 연상 할 수 있도록 하여 다양한 색의 포장용기를 이용해 여러가지 맛의 중식 패스트푸드를 구분할 수 있도록 디자인을 개발하였다. 이를 통해 O2O(Online to Offline) 배달 시스템에 사용되는 중식 패스트푸드 포장용기의 새로운 방향을 제시하였다. This study focuses on packaging containers that are indispensable in food delivery services and play an important role as a moving advertisement as well as the ability to protect food. The purpose is to propose the design of Chinese dish fast food packaging containers that can contain a variety of foods that are out of the ordinary fast food packaging container form. To this end, an overall theoretical review was conducted through a related literature survey on the operating model of the Chinese O2O (Online to Offline) food delivery system and the concept and classification of Chinese dish fast food. Based on the survey on the packaging containers of Chinese fast food currently in use and the analysis of packaging container design applicable to Chinese fast food packaging containers, The results of the survey of consumers are aggregated to derive the design elements of the packaging containers. Based on this, the design of Chinese dish fast food packaging containers suitable for the Chinese O2O(Online to Offline)food delivery system was finally proposed. Unlike conventional packaging containers, the design measures derived from this research process started from the perspective of four design elements, including functions, materials, shapes and colors of packaging containers, and saved space as much as possible by improving the internal structure of packaging containers, and also reducing environmental pollution by using eco-friendly materials. In addition, the traditional Chinese stackable side-dish box was applied to the packaging container design so that there was no resistance to applying it to Chinese fast food packaging containers in China. The design was developed so that the degree of food taste can be reminiscent of color, so that Chinese dish fast food of various flavors can be distinguished using various colored packaging containers. This provided a new direction for the Chinese fast food packaging containers used in the O2O(Online to Offline).
