Anti-HIV-1 Activity of Lignans from the Fruits of Schisandra rubriflora

This study investigated the 70% aqueous acetone extract of the fruits of Schisandra rubriflora which led to the isolation of eight lignans, including a new isolate, rubrisandrin C (1), and seven known lignans (2-8) . The structure of 1 was established by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and its absolute stereochemistry was determined by CD spectrum. Compounds 1-5 and 7-8 were evaluated for their anti-HIV-1 activity that showed inhibitory activity on HIV-1IIIB induced syncytium formation with EC50 values in the range of 2.26~20.4 μg/mL. Compounds 1 and 7 exerted their obvious protection of HIV-1IIIB inducted MT-4 host cells lytic effects with a selectivity index of 15.4 and 24.6, respectively.

Aeropyrum pernix esterase (APE1547) was successfully used to catalyze the enantioselective transesterification of (R/S)-2-methyl-1-butanol in an ionic liquid (IL). Effects of various reaction conditions on the synthetic activity of the enzyme as well as enantioselectivity, including the type of IL, acyl donor, temperature, water activity,and substrate molar ratio were inverstigated. APE1547showed good catalytic performance (activity > 0.8 μmol/min/mg, E > 25), and the enzyme-IL mixture was recycled five times with only a slight decrease in catalytic performance.
Field Emission from TiO2/Ti Nanotube Array Films Modified with Carbon Nanotubes

Well-aligned TiO2/Ti nanotube array films were synthesized by using anodic oxidation of titanium in 0.5-wt% HF and were modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) assembled by using catalyzed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 650 ˚C. The morphology and the quality of the films were assessed with field emission scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectrometry (325 nm). The field emission characteristics of such TiO2/Ti nanostructures were investigated before and after being modified with CNTs. The results show that the TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays possess a moderate turn-on electric field of 7.4 V/µm, a field emission current density of 2.7 mA/cm2 at 23 V/µm. It is noteworthy that the turn-on field of the TiO2/Ti nanotube arrays modified with CNTs is decreased significantly to 1.3 V/µm, and the emission current density is increased to 10 mA/cm2 at 5.6 V/µm. This novel structure shows high emission efficiency as a field emitter. Objective: To understand microstructural changes after myocardial infarction (MI), we evaluated myocardial fibers of rhesus monkeys during acute or chronic MI, and identified the differences of myocardial fibers between acute and chronic MI. Materials and Methods: Six fixed hearts of rhesus monkeys with left anterior descending coronary artery ligation for 1 hour or 84 days were scanned by diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy (FA) and helix angle (HA). Results: Comparing with acute MI monkeys (FA: 0.59 ± 0.02; ADC: 5.0 ± 0.6 x 10-4 mm2/s; HA: 94.5 ± 4.4°), chronic MI monkeys showed remarkably decreased FA value (0.26 ± 0.03), increased ADC value (7.8 ± 0.8 x 10-4mm2/s), decreased HA transmural range (49.5 ± 4.6°) and serious defects on endocardium in infarcted regions. The HA in infarcted regions shifted to more components of negative left-handed helix in chronic MI monkeys (-38.3 ± 5.0°–11.2 ± 4.3°) than in acute MI monkeys (-41.4 ± 5.1°–53.1 ± 3.7°), but the HA in remote regions shifted to more components of positive right-handed helix in chronic MI monkeys (-43.8 ± 2.7°–66.5 ± 4.9°) than in acute MI monkeys (-59.5 ± 3.4°–64.9 ± 4.3°). Conclusion: Diffusion tensor MRI method helps to quantify differences of mechanical microstructure and water diffusion of myocardial fibers between acute and chronic MI monkey’s models.

Background and Purpose The aim of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics and potential mechanisms relevant to pathological proteins in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients who experience fatigue. Methods PD patients (n=102) were evaluated using a fatigue severity scale and scales for motor and nonmotor symptoms. The levels of three pathological proteins—α-synuclein oligomer, β-amyloid (Aβ)1-42, and tau—were measured in 102 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from these PD patients. Linear regression analyses were performed between fatigue score and the CSF levels of the above-listed pathological proteins in PD patients. Results The frequency of fatigue in the PD patients was 62.75%. The fatigue group had worse motor symptoms and anxiety, depression, and autonomic dysfunction. The CSF level of α-synuclein oligomer was higher and that of Aβ1-42 was lower in the fatigue group than in the non-fatigue group. In multiple linear regression analyses, fatigue severity was significantly and positively correlated with the α-synuclein oligomer level in the CSF of PD patients, after adjusting for confounders. Conclusions PD patients experience a high frequency of fatigue. PD patients with fatigue have worse motor and part nonmotor symptoms. Fatigue in PD patients is associated with an increased α-synuclein oligomer level in the CSF

Mobile user interface pattern (MUIP) is a kind of structured representation of interaction design knowledge. Several studies have suggested that MUIPs are a proven solution for recurring mobile interface design problems. To facilitate MUIP selection, an effective clustering method is required to discover hidden knowledge of patterndata set. In this paper, we employ the semi-supervised kernel fuzzy c-means clustering (SSKFCM) method tocluster MUIP data. In order to improve the performance of clustering, clustering parameters are optimized byutilizing the global optimization capability of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Since the PSOalgorithm is easily trapped in local optima, a novel PSO algorithm is presented in this paper. It combines animproved intuitionistic fuzzy entropy measure and a new population search strategy to enhance the populationsearch capability and accelerate the convergence speed. Experimental results show the effectiveness andsuperiority of the proposed clustering method.

In this paper, a sliding mode control using a fractional-order operator (SMCFO) method is presented for the hysteresis of a piezoelectric (PZT) micro-nano platform. At first, the hysteresis of the PZT micro-nano platform is described using the Duhem model. With respect to the sliding mode controller design, we introduce a fractional-order operator into the design of the sliding mode surface and enhance the performance of the proposed controller. The nonlinear switching action of the controller is eliminated through a smooth control action by applying an uncertainty and disturbance estimation technique. The stability of the proposed controller is analyzed using the Lyapunov theorem. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate that the SMCFO method achieves a no-load high precision tracking control of the PZT micro-nano platform and is also robust against load perturbations of the platform

This study was conducted to retrospectively evaluate the pattern of contrast enhancement with SonoVue on gray-scale ultrasonography of hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML). Imaging features of 33 pathologically proven HAML lesions in 33 patients who underwent baseline ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) were assessed retrospectively. All lesions were enhanced in the arterial phase and showed whole-tumor filling in. Thirty-two of 33 (97%) lesions showed early positive enhancement in the arterial phase. Twenty-three of these exhibited isoechoic or hyperechoic features in the portal phase. HAML demonstrate characteristic manifestations with SonoVue-enhanced real-time gray-scale ultrasonography.
Meta-analysis of Gene Expression Data Identifies Causal Genes for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a leading cause of death in male populations across the globe. With the advent of gene expression arrays, many microarray studies have been conducted in prostate cancer, but the results have varied across different studies. To better understand the genetic and biologic mechanisms of prostate cancer, we conducted a meta-analysis of two studies on prostate cancer. Eight key genes were identified to be differentially expressed with progression. After gene co-expression analysis based on data from the GEO database, we obtained a co-expressed gene list which included 725 genes. Gene Ontology analysis revealed that these genes are involved in actin filament-based processes, locomotion and cell morphogenesis. Further analysis of the gene list should provide important clues for developing new prognostic markers and therapeutic targets.
