        Drug resistance and the genotypic characteristics of rpoB and katG in rifampicin- and/or isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates in central Vietnam

        Objectives: Tuberculosis (TB) and drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) are national health burdens in Vietnam. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of rifampicin (RIF) and/or isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide, INH) resistance in patients with suspected TB, and applied appropriate techniques to help rapidly target DR-TB. Methods: In total, 1,547 clinical specimens were collected and cultured using the BACTEC MGIT system (Becton Dickinson and Co.). A resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) was used to determine the proportions of RIF and/or INH resistance. A real-time polymerase chain reaction panel with TaqMan probes was employed to identify the mutations of rpoB and katG associated with DR-TB in clinical isolates. Genotyping of the identified mutations was also performed. Results: A total of 468 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were identified using the REMA. Of these isolates, 106 (22.6%) were found to be resistant to 1 or both antibiotics. Of the resistant isolates, 74 isolates (69.8%) were resistant to isoniazid (INH) only, while 1 isolate (0.94%) was resistant to RIF only. Notably, 31 isolates (29.24%) were resistant to both antibiotics. Of the 41 phenotypically INH-resistant isolates, 19 (46.3%) had the Ser315Thr mutation. There were 8 different rpoB mutations in 22 (68.8%) of the RIF-resistant isolates. The most frequently detected mutations were at codons 531 (37.5%), 526 (18.8%), and 516 (6.3%). Conclusion: To help prevent new cases of DR-TB in Vietnam, it is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of the genotypic DR-TB isolates.

        Factors Affecting Mobile Payment Acceptance and Intention: A Case Study of Hospitality Customers in Vietnam

        The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the Vietnamese economy. In the midst of a complex disease that compelled people to limit their interaction, customers’ shopping habits shifted from “offline” to “online” transactions. Mobile payments have also grown in popularity. The goal of this study is to figure out what factors influence the use of mobile payments by hotel clients in Can Tho after COVID-19. The research team also examines how those factors influence customers’ willingness to use mobile payment and makes recommendations to better the current situation. Primary data was collected from 227 persons using online surveys and processed with SPSS software for this study. To analyze the correlation relationship between the elements determining the intention to use, the Cronbach alpha, EFA, Correlation, and Regression methods used to assess the scale are applied. Perceived Trustworthiness, Perceived Usefulness, and Perceived Ease of Use all have positive effects on customers’ propensity to use, according to the findings. Perceived Security, on the other hand, has no bearing. The findings of this study have significant theoretical and practical implications for the development of mobile payment services in Can Tho, particularly following the implementation of COVID-19.

        Leadership and Communication Skills towards Emotional Intelligence: A Case Study of FPT University in Vietnam

        As society evolves, people are making more of an effort to learn more about human aspects, one of which is emotional intelligence, a topic on which education experts have traditionally concentrated. This is due to the fact that emotional intelligence has a significant impact on how people think and manage their emotions. On the other side, it promotes the development of expressive ability and aids people in better adapting to life. This study explores the relationship between communication skills, leadership skills, stress management, adaptability, and emotional intelligence of FPT University students to determine the factors that affect students’ emotional intelligence. To survey 500 FPT University students, this study used a sample size of 500. Previous studies used a 5-point Likert scale to assess the four skill elements. According to the results, students who completed the survey showed adequate communication skills, leadership qualities, stress management, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is influenced by communication skills, leadership abilities, stress management, and flexibility. This suggests that students who master these four skills have higher levels of emotional intelligence. The outcomes of this study reveal that students have been conscious of Emotional Intelligence since a young age. The affirmations in this research paper will benefit students and young people interested in enhancing complimentary soft skills that boost Emotional Intelligence.

      • <i>Paracoccus</i> <i>panacisoli</i> sp. nov., isolated from a forest soil cultivated with Vietnamese ginseng

        <P>A novel bacterial strain, designated DCY94<SUP>T</SUP>, was isolated from forest soil cultivated with ginseng in Vietnam. The strain was Gram-reaction-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and catalase- and oxidase-positive. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis demonstrated that strain DCY94<SUP>T</SUP> was closely related to <I>Paracoccus sphaerophysae</I> Zy-3<SUP>T</SUP> (97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and <I>Paracoccus caeni</I> MJ17<SUP>T</SUP> (96.9 %). The fatty acid profile of strain DCY94<SUP>T</SUP> contained a predominant amount of summed feature 8 (C<SUB>18 : 1</SUB>ω7<I>c</I> and/or C<SUB>18 : 1</SUB>ω6<I>c</I>; 88.4 %) and moderate to small quantities of C<SUB>8 : 0</SUB> 3-OH (1.0 %), C<SUB>10 : 0</SUB> 3-OH (2.8 %) and C<SUB>18 : 0</SUB> (5.2 %). Phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and one unidentified glycolipid were major polar lipids; one unidentified aminolipid, one unidentified aminophospholipid, one unidentified phospholipid and four unidentified polar lipids were minor components. The polyamine pattern comprised the major compounds putrescine and spermidine and minor amounts of <I>sym</I>-homospermidine and spermine. The ubiquinone of the strain was Q-10 and the G+C content of its genomic DNA was 68.3 mol%. All these results support the placement of strain DCY94<SUP>T</SUP> within the genus <I>Paracoccus</I> . Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain DCY94<SUP>T</SUP> and <I>P. sphaerophysae</I> HAMBI 3106<SUP>T</SUP> and <I>P. caeni</I> KCTC 22480<SUP>T</SUP> were 52 and 50 %, respectively. The results of phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic tests, chemotaxonomic characterization and DNA–DNA relatedness studies distinguished strain DCY94<SUP>T</SUP> from the closest recognized species of the genus <I>Paracoccus</I> , suggesting that this strain represents a novel species, for which the name <I>Paracoccus panacisoli</I> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DCY94<SUP>T</SUP> ( = KCTC 42086<SUP>T</SUP> = JCM 30337<SUP>T</SUP>).</P>

      • Enhancement of single mixed refrigerant natural gas liquefaction process through process knowledge inspired optimization and modification

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study examined the enhancement of the single mixed refrigerant (SMR) natural gas liquefaction process. The effects of the main parameters, such as mixed refrigerant (MR) composition and operating pressures on the compression energy requirement were investigated. A process knowledge inspired decision-making method was exploited for liquefied natural gas process optimization. The results showed that the proposed optimization methodology is simple and effective in determining the optimal operating conditions and could save up to 30.6% in terms of the compressor duty compared to the base case. In addition, the proposed optimization methodology provides process understanding, which is essential to process engineers. Another benefit of the proposed methodology is that it can be applied to any MR liquefaction cycle. The use of heavier refrigerants, such as isobutane and isopentane, and the addition of a NG compressor were examined to improve the energy efficiency of the SMR process. The effect of the intercooler outlet temperature on energy saving was also considered. The synergistic effects of those modifications on improving the performance of the liquefaction process were investigated.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Simple, compact and energy-efficient SMR processes were proposed. </LI> <LI> Proposed process showed a synergetic advantage of enhancing energy efficiency. </LI> <LI> Energy saving of 30.6% can be accomplished by a knowledge-inspired optimization. </LI> <LI> Energy requirement is reduced significantly lowering the intercooler temperature. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Novel retrofit designs using a modified coordinate descent methodology for improving energy efficiency of natural gas liquid fractionation process

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Tough environmental regulations, intense competition, expensive fossil energy use, and the strong growth predictions of the natural gas market have prompted efforts to retrofit the existing purification processes to reduce their energy requirements. The important goals of retrofit design are to analyze, evaluate and propose suitable technologies to improve the energy efficiency and/or increase the capacity. This paper reports the results of a techno-economic feasibility study to retrofit a natural gas liquid (NGL) fractionation process. A novel hybrid system, side reboiler and heat pump-assisted, thermally-coupled distillation sequence to maximize the energy efficiency, was proposed. Fractional utilization of the area was used as a hydraulic performance indicator to determine if a bottleneck occurs in a retrofit design. A modified coordinate descent methodology was employed to solve the optimization problem. As a result, the modified coordinate descent methodology was successful in finding the optimal proposed sequence structure and the operating variables, which resulted in operating cost savings of 44.55% compared to the representative base case. The short payback period of 14 months and reduced CO<SUB>2</SUB> emissions of up to 42.05% showed that the proposed sequence is an attractive option for retrofitting in industrial implementation. This sequence can be employed for both grass-root and retrofit designs.         Environmental-friendly method for preparing CoFe2O4 coated biopolymer extracted from dragon fruit peel: Characterization and application as nanocomposite adsorbent for removal of As(III) pollutants from aqueous solution

        This study successfully developed a low-cost adsorbent from compositing between magnetic nanoparticle(CoFe2O4) and dragon fruit peel-derived biopolymer (DFP-BP) and applied it to remove arsenite (As(III)) from contaminated water. The batch experiments were designed to study the influence of operationalparameters on As(III) adsorption by nanocomposite (CoFe2O4@DFP-BP). With mapping analysis,the synthesized CoFe2O4@DFP-BP was characterized using SBET, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and EDS mapping. TheAs(III) adsorption mechanism was discussed based on material property data and isotherm and kineticanalysis. The result suggests that 5% is the best modification ratio on the CoFe2O4@DFP-BP for As(III)adsorption. The highest adsorption capacity of As(III) under the optimal conditions of pH 7, adsorbentdosage of 1.6 g/L, initial As(III) concentration of 2000 lg/L and the best described by the Sips modelwas 1922.7 lg/g. The adsorption kinetic followed pseudo-second-order, proving As(III) adsorption processcontrolled by chemisorption. The primary reaction pathway of As(III) adsorption on theCoFe2O4@DFP-BP5 was inner-sphere complexation through exchange between the nanoadsorbent’s surfaceand As(III) ions via oxygen-containing functional (carboxyl and hydroxyl) groups. The CoFe2O4 magneticnanoparticles coated by biopolymer overcame drawbacks, including low stability and mechanicalstrength of biopolymer and agglomerate trend of magnetic nanoparticles. The adsorption process washighly reversible and accessible in the separation of nanoadsorbent after adsorption by the magnet. Therefore, the nanocomposite formed from solid waste has excellent potential as a material for removingAs, contributing to sustainable development and feasibility in practical application.

        Women’s empowerment and transnational consumption of Hallyu in Vietnam

        Bài viết này nhằmmục đích tìm hiểu mức độ phổ biến và tiêu dùng của giới trẻ Việt Nam đang ngày càng gia tăng đối với văn hóa đại chúng Hàn Quốc, hay còn gọi là Hàn lưu (Làn sóng Hàn Quốc) cũng như xem xét đến các tác động văn hóa xã hội của Hàn lưu tại Việt Nam. Bài viết chủ yếu sử dụng phương pháp phỏng vấn sâu và bảng hỏi khảo sát để thu thập dữ liệu với mục đích xác định xu hướng và ý nghĩa của việc tiêu dùng sản phẩm Hàn lưu trong giới phụ nữ trẻ ở Việt Nam. Kết qủa khảo sát cho thấy việc tiêu thụ các sản phẩm Hallyu của phụ nữ trẻ Việt Nam thể hiện (i) sự xuất hiện một thế hệ phụ nữ mới ở Việt Nam và họ được trao quyền như những người tiêu dùng hiện đại, những người có tác động đến sự lựa chọn của người tiêu dùng và cung cấp thêm thông tin thông qua việc sử dụng các kênh đa dạng, và (ii) thể hiện mong muốn của họ trong việc xây dựng nữ quyền và lối sống hiện đại và mang tính quốc tế dựa trên vai trò và vị thế đang thay đổi của phụ nữ ở Việt Nam. Kết quả nghiên cứu góp phần bổ sung thêm tài liệu nghiên cứu về việc tiêu thụ hàng hoá và truyền thông xuyên quốc gia, cũng như về vấn đề trao quyền cho phụ nữ, đặc biệt ở các nước đang phát triển. This paper aims to explore the growing popularity and consumption of Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu (Originating from Chinese, the Korean term, Hallyu is “Hàn lưu” in Vietnamese and pronounced similarly. During our interviews, we used the latter term, and in our survey we referred to “Korean cultural products”) (Korean Wave) amongst young Vietnamese women and examine its socio-cultural implications. To this end, we used in-depth interviews and a survey questionnaire as the main methods of data collection and endeavored to identify the trends and meaning of young women’s consumption of Hallyu products in Vietnam. Findings suggest that these signify the following: (i) the emergence of a new generation of womanhood in Vietnam and their empowerment as modern consumers who navigate consumer choices and complement information through the use of diverse channels, and (ii) their desire to construct a modern and cosmopolitan femininity and lifestyle underpinned by the changing role and status of women in the country. These findings add to a growing body of literature on the transnational consumption of media and goods as well as on women’s empowerment, especially in developing countries.

      • A cost-effective retrofit of conventional distillation sequence to dividing-wall prefractionator configuration

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A dividing-wall prefractionator configuration was investigated for a safe and economic retrofit of the conventional sequence using simple distillation columns. In the proposed retrofit configuration, the first column was modified to a dividing wall column as a prefractionator to supply prefractionated multi-feeds to the subsequent column. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed configuration, nine near-ideal feed mixtures were considered for analysis. The proposed configuration was then compared with several other alternative configurations. The proposed dividing-wall prefractionator efficiently generates prefractionated multi-feed streams avoiding feed mismatch and remixing effect with low modification cost. Moreover, because the proposed retrofit configuration allows for flexible switching between the dividing-wall prefractionator and the conventional operating mode, a safe retrofit is also ensured by reducing the operational risks.
