Decompression Surgery versus Interspinous Devices for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: A Systematic Review of the Literature

        Tram Jennifer,Srinivas Shanmukha,Wali Arvin R.,Lewis Courtney S.,Pham Martin H. 대한척추외과학회 2020 Asian Spine Journal Vol.14 No.4

In this retrospective review study, the authors systematically reviewed the literature to elucidate the efficacy and complications associated with decompression and interspinous devices (ISDs) used in surgeries for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). LSS is a debilitating condition that affects the lumbar spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. However, a comprehensive report on the relative efficacy and complication rate of ISDs as they compare to traditional decompression procedures is currently lacking. The PubMed database was queried to identify clinical studies that exclusively investigated decompression, those that exclusively investigated ISDs, and those that compared decompression with ISDs. Only prospective cohort studies, case series, and randomized controlled trials that evaluated outcomes using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index, or Japanese Orthopedic Association scores were included. A random-effects model was established to assess the difference between preoperative and the 1–2-year postoperative VAS scores between ISD surgery and lumbar decompression. This study included 40 papers that matched our criteria. Twenty-five decompression-exclusive clinical trials with 3,386 patients and a mean age of 68.7 years (range, 31–88 years) reported a 2.2% incidence rate of dural tears and a 2.6% incidence rate of postoperative infections. Eight ISD-exclusive clinical trials with 1,496 patients and a mean age of 65.1 (range, 19–89 years) reported a 5.3% incidence rate of postoperative leg pain and a 3.7% incidence rate of spinous process fractures. Seven studies that compared ISDs and decompression in 624 patients found a reoperation rate of 8.3% in ISD patients vs. 3.9% in decompression patients; they also reported dural tears in 0.32% of ISD patients vs. 5.2% in decompression patients. A meta-analysis of the randomized controlled trials found that the differences in preoperative and postoperative VAS scores between the two groups were not significant. Both decompression and ISD interventions are unique surgical interventions with different therapeutic efficacies and complications. The collected studies do not consistently demonstrate superiority of either procedure over the other but understanding the differences between the two techniques can help tailor treatment regimens for patients with LSS.

An Analysis of Hedges/Intensifiers in Argumentative Essays Written by Native English Speakers and Vietnamese EFL Learners

        Tram-Anh Tran Nguyen,Sang-Geun Lee 한국중원언어학회 2021 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.58

This study investigated the characteristic distribution of hedges and intensifiers in argumentative essays of NESs and Vietnamese EFL learners to see if there is any positive or negative relation between writing qualities and the two rhetorical devices. By using both quantitative and qualitative analysis of 90 essays (30 from NESs, 30 from advanced Vietnamese EFL learners, and 30 from intermediate Vietnamese EFL learners), we obtained some meaningful findings. First, no significant difference was found between the NESs and the Vietnamese learners regarding the frequency of hedges and intensifiers. However, both the NESs and the advanced Vietnamese learners showed a tendency to use more hedges and fewer intensifiers than the intermediate Vietnamese learners. Second, hedges turned out to have a positive correlation with writing qualities while intensifiers were negatively related to writing scores. This study is significant from the ESL/EFL education in that it reveals a correlation between language proficiency and the use of hedges/intensifiers and that it helps ESL/EFL learners to more effectively use the two devices in academic writing.

Which Node of Supply Chain Suffers Mostly to Disruption in the Pandemic?

Tram Thi Bich NGUYEN 한국유통과학회 2021 유통과학연구 Vol.19 No.11

Purpose: The Covid-19 pandemic has had excessively severe impacts on all the nodes and edges of any supply chain due to changes in consumer behaviours and lockdown restrictions from governments among countries. This article aims to provide a simulating experiment on how a supply chain deals with supply disruption risks by flexibility in the inventory level of each sector as a buffer considering the overall cost to fulfil demand in the market. Research design, data and methodology: Agent-based simulation techniques are used to determine the cost-efficiency and customer waiting time related to varying inventory levels of each member in the supply chain when using inventory buffers. Findings: This study has shown that any sudden changes in the inventory level of each sector are likely to impact the rest of the supply chain. Among all sectors, the wholesaler will be impacted more severely than others. Also, the manufacturing sector is the most suitable node to adjust inventory depending on its manufacturing ability. Conclusion: The findings of the study provide insightful implications for decision-makers to adjust inventory levels and policymakers to maintain manufacturing activities in the context of the pandemic restrictions to deal with the excessive demand and potential supply disruption risks.

        High-throughput Low-complexity Mixed-radix FFT Processor using a Dual-path Shared Complex Constant Multiplier

Tram Thi Bao Nguyen,Hanho Lee 대한전자공학회 2017 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.17 No.1

This paper presents a high-throughput lowcomplexity 512-point eight-parallel mixed-radix multipath delay feedback (MDF) fast Fourier transform (FFT) processor architecture for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) applications. To decrease the number of twiddle factor (TF) multiplications, a mixed-radix 24/23 FFT algorithm is adopted. Moreover, a dual-path shared canonical signed digit (CSD) complex constant multiplier using a multi-layer scheme is proposed for reducing the hardware complexity of the TF multiplication. The proposed FFT processor is implemented using TSMC 90-nm CMOS technology. The synthesis results demonstrate that the proposed FFT processor can lead to a 16% reduction in hardware complexity and higher throughput compared to conventional architectures.

Carbon Pricing and Income Inequality: An Empirical Investigation

        Tram T.H. Nguyen,송원호 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2021 Journal of Economic Development Vol.46 No.2

Carbon pricing, a carbon tax or emission trading system, is widely considered one of the most powerful policy options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, since a carbon pricing causes the costs of energy and other goods to increase, there are many concerns that carbon pricing would be regressive, negatively affecting low-income households and income inequality. While most of earlier studies use microsimulations and Input-Output tables to evaluate the distributional effect of different carbon pricing scenarios, debate continues over the impacts of carbon pricing policies on inequality in practice. This paper tries to estimate the effects of the carbon pricing policies on inequality with a panel of 53 countries from 1990 to 2019 using a panel fixed-effect model and panel VAR (Vector Autoregression) model. The estimation results indicate that carbon pricing has progressive effects on inequality and revenue-recycling mechanism has regressive effects. The same result is found for OECD (or high-income) countries whereas carbon pricing tends to be regressive for non-OECD (middle and low-income) countries.

Exchange Rate Volatility and FDI Response during the Financial Crisis: Empirical Evidence from Vietnam

HUONG, Tram Thi Xuan,NGUYEN, My-Linh Thi,LIEN, Nguyen Thi Kim Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

This study is to examine the foreign direct investment (FDI) response to real effective exchange rate volatility in Vietnam by using the vector autoregression model. The research data are quarterly frequency data in the period from 2004:Q1 to 2019:Q2. The data on real effective exchange rate were collected from the statistics of Bruegel (Europe) and FDI data were collected from the International Financial Statistics. The quantitative study was conducted with two steps: (1) measuring exchange rate volatility by the GARCH(1,1) method; and (2) examining the impact of exchange rate volatility on FDI in the context of the global financial crisis. The estimation results show that FDI responded significantly to real exchange rate volatility with the lag of 3 periods at the 5% significance level. The FDI response increased after the exchange rate volatility with the lag of 3 periods, and the impact extended to the lag of 6 periods, and then gradually stabilized. The research findings indicate that FDI in Vietnam responds positively and significantly to exchange rate volatility with the lag of 3 periods. Simultaneously, the negative impact of the global financial crisis in 2008 with the lag of 2 periods leads to a slight decrease in FDI inflows into Vietnam.

      • Optimization of modified single mixed refrigerant process of natural gas liquefaction using multivariate Coggin’s algorithm combined with process knowledge

Pham, Tram Ngoc,Khan, Mohd Shariq,Minh, Le Quang,Husmil, Yuli Amalia,Bahadori, Alireza,Lee, Sanggyu,Lee, Moonyong Elsevier 2016 Journal of natural gas science and engineering Vol.33 No.-

Abstract

The optimization of a mixed refrigerant liquefaction process is a challenge because of its non-linear characteristics with stringent multiple process constraints. This study proposes a novel hybrid approach for the optimization of a newly developed, modified single mixed refrigerant process of natural gas liquefaction targeted for offshore applications. This contribution focuses on interpreting the geometric pattern of a plot of the temperature difference between the hot and cold composite curves in a cryogenic heat exchanger to understand the profound effects of the flow rates of the individual refrigerant components and the operating pressure on the liquefaction efficiency. From this, an effective method to generate a proper initial approach temperature profile was developed to ensure robust convergence of the main optimization step. An enhanced coordinate descent methodology was implemented in the main optimization procedure to accelerate the optimization of the modified single mixed refrigerant liquefaction process. The proposed knowledge-inspired hybrid optimization approach showed a robust convergence on determining the optimal design condition. The total energy requirement for natural gas liquefaction cycle was reduced by 21.9% compared to the base case. The proposed methodology can be extended directly to solve optimization problems for other mixed refrigerant based natural gas liquefaction processes.

Highlights

Analysis of the TDCC plot of the MSMR process.

Effects of decision variables on the performance of NG liquefaction.

An enhanced coordinate descent methodology to accelerate the optimization.

A good initial point and search sequence to ensure robust convergence.

The compression energy for NG liquefaction was reduced significantly.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Factors Affecting Mobile Payment Acceptance and Intention: A Case Study of Hospitality Customers in Vietnam

Dinh Tram Anh PHAN,Thi Thuy Ngan NGUYEN,Thi Khanh Nhi NGUYEN,Tran Thien An NGUYEN,Van Si Dan PHAN,Ngoc Phuong Thao HO,Kim Xuan DO,Trong Luan NGUYEN 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.5

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the Vietnamese economy. In the midst of a complex disease that compelled people to limit their interaction, customers’ shopping habits shifted from “offline” to “online” transactions. Mobile payments have also grown in popularity. The goal of this study is to figure out what factors influence the use of mobile payments by hotel clients in Can Tho after COVID-19. The research team also examines how those factors influence customers’ willingness to use mobile payment and makes recommendations to better the current situation. Primary data was collected from 227 persons using online surveys and processed with SPSS software for this study. To analyze the correlation relationship between the elements determining the intention to use, the Cronbach alpha, EFA, Correlation, and Regression methods used to assess the scale are applied. Perceived Trustworthiness, Perceived Usefulness, and Perceived Ease of Use all have positive effects on customers’ propensity to use, according to the findings. Perceived Security, on the other hand, has no bearing. The findings of this study have significant theoretical and practical implications for the development of mobile payment services in Can Tho, particularly following the implementation of COVID-19.
