The current study evaluates the capacity of eugenol to regulate immediate allergic reaction by control of histamine release. Administrations of eugenol (1 M/kg. i.p.) at 60 min before and 5.10 min after the compound 48/80 treatment (8 mg/kg.i.p.) were shown the mortality rates as 0.44.4. and 77.8%. respectively. A 60 min before administered group revealed a singificant inhibition of serum his-tamine release compared with those of 5 and 10 min after the compound 48/80 injection. Eugenol (6-48mM) was also showed a dose-dependent activity on the compound 48/80-induced histamine release from the highly purified population of Alcian Blue-positive peritoneal mast cells. These results indicate that in vitro treatment with exogenous eugenol inhibited the active response of mast cell populations and modulated its characteristics.

A rapid and simple method for the determination of histamine by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection was established. 9-Fluorenylmethyl chloroformate(FMOC) was used as fluorescent derivative reagent. The optimum conditions for the derivatiation such as pH, reaction time and he concentration of FMOC were investigated. Linearity of calibration curve was obtained between 0.1ug/ml/and 0.5ug/ml(r=0.922) and the limit of detection was 0.01ug/ml.

The purpose of this study is to observe how balance exercise on an unstable platform and on a stable platform affects balance ability. The subjects were 35 adults in their 20s and were randomly assigned to a stable platform group and an unstable platform group. They performed balance exercise three times per week for six weeks. Balance exercise introduced by previous research was modified and complemented for use in this study. Balance ability of the subjects was measured through center of pressure(COP) area, medial-lateral displacement, and anterior-posterior displacement using a portable balance platform BT4. There was significant difference in the COP area between the unstable platform exercise group and the stable platform exercise group. In comparison in differences between the unstable platform exercise group and the stable platform exercise group after the exercise, there was significant difference in anteriorposterior movement. Therefore, exercise on an unstable platform is more effective than exercise on a stable platform in strengthening balance ability.

N/A A randomized crossover study was done to compare the hemodynamic effects of conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) and high frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) at comparable levels of alveolar ventilation, Airway pressure, esophageal pressure, and hemodynamic variables using femoral artery and Swan-Ganz catheter were measured during spontaneous ventilation and artificial ventilation with CMV and HFJV, Mean airway pressure and esophageal pressure were significantly lower during HF~JV than during CMV (Paw; 2.22±0.44 vs. 4.12±0.62, Peso; 1.8±0.3 vs. 3.2±0.6). Heart rate, systemic arterial pressure, pulmonary arterial pr re, and pulmonary vascular resistance were not different during both modes of ventilation. Cardiac index, stroke index, and pulmonary artery wedge pressure were significantly higher during HFJV than during CMV (cardiac index; 4.1±0.8 vs. 3.8±0.7, stroke index; 25.0±5.2 vs. 22.8±5.2, PAWP; 3.3±1.4 vs. 2.2±1.3). In conclusion, HFJV produces less hemodynamic impairements and maintains adequate ventilation at lower mean airway pressure and esophageal pressure in normal dogs. This hemodynamic advantage of HFJV is provably related to the lower mean airway pressure produced by HFJV than by CMV.

N/A In chronic bronchitis, a randomized, double blind crossover study was done to evaluate the bronchodilatory effect of ipratropium bromide aerosol added on fenoterol. 14 cases of chronic bronchitis were selected and 2 serial pulmonary fuction tests were done, after 2 puffs of fenoterol and 2 puffs of ipratropium (FFII), and after 4 puffs of fenoterol (FFFF), on two successive days. The results were as follows; 1) There were significant bronchodilatory effects in 5 and 60 minutes after both modes of adminstration 2) At 5 minutes after administration, both modes of therapy showed comparable bronchodilatory effects. 3) At 60 minutes after administration, bronchodilatory effect of FFII was greater than that of FFFF 4) At smaller airways, the bronchodilatory effect of FFII was greater than that of FFFF, but the difference was not statistically significant. In conclusion, the combined use of fenoterol and ipratropium bromide was superior to double dose fenoterol therapy in chronic bronchitis.

Background/Aims: Pancreatic cancer is fatal with a dismal 6-month median survival from diagnosis. Diabetes mellitus is reported to be present up to 33.3 percent of patients with pancreatic cancer. The reason for the high frequency of diabetes is unknown. We studied the prevalence and duration of diabetes in patients with pancreatic cancer and the relationship between the two diseases. Methods: A total of 152 patients with pancreatic cancer diagnosed at Yeungnam University Hospital from January 1999 to December 2001 were enrolled in this study. Clinical features, family history, smoking history, and characteristics of the tumor were compared between diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Results: Among 152 patients with pancreatic cancer, 43 patients (28.3%) had diabetes. In diabetic group, mean age of diagnosis was significantly younger than non- diabetic group (62.0±7.2 vs. 65.0±8.8, p<0.05). Most of the patients with diabetes had non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and did not have family history. Diabetes was diagnosed within 2 years after the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 35 patients (74.3%) of the diabetic group. There were no differences in the location and stage of tumor, chief complaints, presence of weight loss, and body mass index between the two groups. Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus occurs frequently in patients with pancreatic cancer and does not influence clinical features of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer should be suspected in patients with recent onset diabetes, especially in patients without family history of diabetes and with type of NIDDM. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2004;43:35-40)

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinematic sequence patterns according to movement times during Karate choku-tsuki. Method: Ten Korea national Karate athletes participated in this study. Participants asked to perform jodan and chudan choku-tsuki. 30 infrared cameras were used to measure angular kinematic of elbow, shoulder, trunk, pelvis, hip, knee, ankle. Results: The two-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant effects for the joints (p<.05). But no significant effect for the movement time and interaction of joints x movement time existed for the kinematic sequence variables. Conclusion: For karate kumite players to reduce the movement time of punch, it is necessary to train kinematic sequences that allow each joint to rotate at a relatively similar timing.

The purpose of the present study is to provide exercises, together with music, that are helpful for elderly people’s balancing ability, and to determine their effects in order to provide data for the promotion of elderly persons’health. Thirty elderly persons were randomly assigned to a balance training group(BTG) of 15 subjects, or a music and balance training group (music therapy + balance training [MTBTG]) of 15 subjects; intervention was implemented three times per week for six weeks. To measure the changes in their balancing ability before and after the experiment, the limit of stability, the“Timed Up and Go”(TUG) test, and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) were measured. Changes in the limit of stability before and after the experiment were shown to be significant in both the BTG and the MTBTG. Changes in the limit of stability of the right side before and after the experiment showed statistically significant differences between the BTG and the MTBTG. Changes in the TUG test and the BBS before and after the experiment were shown to be statistically significant in both the BTG and the MTBTG. The application of music during balance training thus is considered to have a positive effect on elderly persons’balancing ability.
