        Identification of signature gene set as highly accurate determination of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease progression

        Background/Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is characterized by fat accumulation in the liver. MASLD encompasses both steatosis and MASH. Since MASH can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer, steatosis and MASH must be distinguished during patient treatment. Here, we investigate the genomes, epigenomes, and transcriptomes of MASLD patients to identify signature gene set for more accurate tracking of MASLD progression. Methods: Biopsy-tissue and blood samples from patients with 134 MASLD, comprising 60 steatosis and 74 MASH patients were performed omics analysis. SVM learning algorithm were used to calculate most predictive features. Linear regression was applied to find signature gene set that distinguish the stage of MASLD and to validate their application into independent cohort of MASLD. Results: After performing WGS, WES, WGBS, and total RNA-seq on 134 biopsy samples from confirmed MASLD patients, we provided 1,955 MASLD-associated features, out of 3,176 somatic variant callings, 58 DMRs, and 1,393 DEGs that track MASLD progression. Then, we used a SVM learning algorithm to analyze the data and select the most predictive features. Using linear regression, we identified a signature gene set capable of differentiating the various stages of MASLD and verified it in different independent cohorts of MASLD and a liver cancer cohort. Conclusions: We identified a signature gene set (i.e., CAPG, HYAL3, WIPI1, TREM2, SPP1, and RNASE6) with strong potential as a panel of diagnostic genes of MASLD-associated disease.

      • Two New Species of the Genus Arboridia Zachvatkin (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) from Korea

        The genus Arboridia Zachvatkin belongs to the tribe Erythroneurini of the subfamily Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae). A total of 69 valid species have been described in the Palaearctic and Oriental region. So far, seven species of this genus have been recorded in the Korean Peninsula. In this study, we present two new species, Arboridia sp. nov. 1, Arboridia sp. nov. 2, and provide a key to the Arboridia species in the Korean Peninsula with biological information such as host plants and distributions.

        A naphthol-based fluorescence turn-on sensor for detecting Ga(III) and its application to test strips

        A new naphthol-based chemosensor NPN ((E)-2-(((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-ylmethylene)amino)isoindoline-1,3-dione) was synthesized. NPN could sense Ga3+ by a fluorescence ?turn-on? method from colorless to blue. Detection limit for Ga3+ by NPN was determined to be 0.26??M. The sensing mode of NPN and Ga3+ turned out to be a 1:1. NPN could also be successfully applied to visible fluorescent test strips. The sensing process of Ga3+ by NPN was illustrated through 1H NMR titration, Job plot, ESI-MS, and DFT calculations.

      • Taxonomic study on leafhopper subfamily Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae) from the Korean Peninsula

        Leafhopper subfamily, Typhlocybinae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae), caused direct damage by sap-sucking or indirect damage by transmission of viruses or diseases on the host plants, so typhlocybinae is one of the important pest groups in the world. Typhlocybinae distribute worldwide and a total of 471 genera and more than 4,300 species have been described. so far, 38 genera and 102 species were recorded in the Korean Peninsula. In this talk, we provide several taxonomic studies for the Korean typhlocybene fauna based on the genus-level reviews of the subfamily from the Korean Peninsula.

        Event-Related Potential (ERP) Changes in the Visual Cortex Wearing Multifocal Contact Lenses

        목적 : 멀티포컬 콘택트렌즈(MFCL) 착용 시 시각 피질에서 발생하는 ERP 변화를 확인하기 위하여 단초점 콘택트렌즈 착용 시 나타나는 ERP 변화와 비교하였다. 방법 : 안질환이 없는 근시안 20명 (여성 15명, 남성 5명, 평균 연령 24.00±0.51세)을 대상으로 하였으며, 단안 시력 0.00 logMAR 이하, -0.75 D 이상의 난시안, 0.50 D 이상의 부등시안, 조절력이 비정상적이거나 시력교정술을 받은 경우는 제외하였다. 단초점 콘택트렌즈(SVCL)와 낮은 가입도 중심부-근용 멀티포컬 콘택트렌즈를착용시킨 후 NeuroScan SynAmps 2 프로그램을 이용하여 시피질에서 일어나는 시각반응을 ERP로 기록하였다. P100 분석은 O1, O2 채널을 사용하고, N170 분석은 P7, PO7, P8 및 PO8 채널을 사용하였다. MFCL 착용 후 나타난 P100과 N170의 활성도(amplitude)와 반응시간(latency)은 SVCL 착용 후 나타난 값과 비교하였다. 결과 : MFCL 착용 시 단안과 양안에서의 P100 활성도는 SVCL 착용 시와 차이가 없었으나 P100 반응시간은 우세안에서 SVCL 착용 상태보다 길었다(p=0.036). MFCL 착용 시 우세안의 N170 활성도는 비우세안보다 작았고(p=0.001), 비우세안은 단초점 콘택트렌즈 착용 시보다 작았다(p=0.008). 그러나 양안에서 N170 활성도와 반응시간은 SVCL 착용 상태와 차이를 보이지 않았다(p=0.200), (p=0.249). 결론 : MFCL 착용 후 초기시각반응과 인식과정은 우세안에서는 저하되었지만, 양안 상태에서는 SVCL 착용시와 차이가 없었다. 따라서 MFCL 착용 후 나타나는 망막에 맺힌 흐린 상은 양안 융합과정에서 극복되어 시기능에 영향을 주지 않는 것으로 사료된다. Purpose : To understand the event-related potential (ERP) changes in the visual cortex with eyes wearing multifocal contact lens (MFCL). Methods : Twenty myopes (15 females, 5 males, 24.00±0.51 years) who had no history of ocular disease participated. The exclusion criteria were monocular corrected visual acuity worse than 0.00 logMAR, astigmatism >-0.75 D, anisometropia >0.50 D, abnormal accommodative amplitude, or any history of refractive surgery. After wearing SVCL and low-add MFCL, visual responses occurring in the visual cortex were recorded as ERPs using NeuroScan SynAmps 2 program. The P100 was analyzed for initial visual responses using O1 and O2 channels, and N170 was obtained for visual recognition using P7, PO7, P8 and PO8 channels. The amplitude and latency of P100 and N170 when wearing MFCL were compared with those of SVCL wearing. Results : When wearing MFCL, the P100 amplitudes showed no difference compared with wearing SVCL under monocular and binocular viewing conditions, however, the latency of P100 was longer in the dominant eye than wearing SVCL (p=0.036). The N170 amplitudes in the dominant and the non-dominant eye wearing MFCL were significantly smaller than those with SVCL wearing (p=0.001, p=0.008, respectively), and the N170 latencies in the dominant and the non-dominant eye wearing MFCL were not different from wearing SVCL. Under binocular condition, the N170 amplitude and latency were not different from wearing SVCL (p=0.200, p=0.249, respectively). Conclusion : When wearing MFCL monocularly, the initial visual response and recognition response were lower than wearing SVCL, but there was no difference binocularly. Therefore, it is considered that the ghost images that appears when wearing MFCL would be overcome through binocular fusion, and would not affect binocular visual performance.

        Case of Chronic Active Epstein-Barr Virus Infection Developed Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis after COVID-19 Infection

        In children, prolonged primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection or reactivation may lead to the development of T or natural killer cell lymphoproliferative disorders, clas-sified as chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV). CAEBV is a prolonged systemic illness lasting beyond three months, with elevated EBV DNA levels in the serum or affected tissue and a lack of underlying immunodeficiency. Notably, EBV is the most common virus that induces secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been reported to trigger HLH. We present the case of a 20-year-old Korean male who was diagnosed with CAEBV and devel-oped HLH after being infected with COVID-19. The patient met 7 out of 8 criteria for HLH. Following treatment with corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin, the patient recovered from HLH without additional chemotherapy. HLH treatment should be tailored to each patient based on clinical presentation and disease severity. Prolonged and regular evaluation for developing HLH or lymphoma is necessary for patients with CAEBV.

      • Taxonomic Review of Grape Pest Leafhoppers, the Genus Arboridia Zachvatkin (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhynch: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) from KOREA

        Grapevines are cultivated globally, and are also damaged by a large number of insect pests especially including leafhoppers. Leafhoppers are one of the important insect pests on various crops including grape. Among them, the genus Arboridia Zachvatkin (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae) was known as insect pests against grape farming. Eighty species were described in the genus in the world, and eight species were recorded in the Korean Peninsula so far, which are: Arboridia apicalis, A. kakogawana, A. koreacola, A. maculifrons, A. nigrigena, A. okamotonis, A. silvarum, A. suzukii. Among them, A. apicalis, A. kakogawana, A. maculifrons, A. nigrigena, A. suzukii have been known as important insect pests on grapes. In this talk, we propose a new species from the Korean Peninsula, and confirmed two new records: A. agrillacea and A. lunula. Additionally we present differential diagnoses of the Arboridia species damaging on grapevines for the field of applied biology.

        Thickness and Pore Size Control of Chitin Nanofibers by Ultra-sonication and Its Biological Effect in vitro

        Electrospinning is one of widely used methods fabrication of tissue engineering scaffold. Chitin, a natural polymer, is used as biomedical materials due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. This study is to obtain the chitin nanofibrous scaffold for tissue engineering application. In this study, pore size and thickness of chitin nanofibous sheet controlled by ultra-sonication. The surface properties of chitin nanofibrous sheet and ultra-sonicated scaffold performed scanning electron microscopy and water contact angle. The cellular adhesion and migration on the chitin nanofibrous scaffolds were evaluated by MTT and hematoxylin & eosin staining, respectively. As the chitin nanofibrous sheet had above about 2.4 μm surface pore size, normal human dermal fibroblasts began to infiltration into the inside of scaffolds. And the scaffolds have larger pore size, cells more deeply infiltrated on scaffolds. According these results, the porosity and pore size of nanofibers have an effect on cellular migration. Therefore ultra-sonication method was appropriated to control of the pore size of chitin nanofibrous sheet. And the three dimensional chitin scaffolds might be a potential material as tissue engineering.

      • Taxonomic review of the genus Tautoneura Anufriev (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhynch: Cicadellidae: Typhlocybinae)

        Genus Tautoneura Anufriev, 1969 (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadellidae: Typlocybinae) were recorded 59 species in the world. Among them, only 1 species: Tautoneura mori has been recorded so far in the Korean Peninsula. Tautoneura mori is known as a major pest of Mulberry in China and Japan, and we also confirmed that it appears on Mulberry in Korea. In this talk, we confirmed two new records: Tautoneura japonica, Tautoneura tricolor to the Korean typhlocybinae fauna, and we also discovered one new species to science. Additionally, we provide biological information such as host plants and distributional records, with a key to the Korean Tautoneura species. We also discuss potential status of each species as an agricultural pest concerning its biological traits.
