Vol.17 No.3
This study examines the concept of plurilingual and pluricultural competence presented by the CEFR(2018) and proposes application methods in Korean language education. In Korean language education, learners can improve their competence to target language and culture by understanding that learners have various languages and cultural backgrounds and utilizing such resources and experiences. To this end, the understanding and acceptance of culture can be facilitated by establishing a pluricultural repertoire. The target language can be learned by utilizing various language resources through plurilingual understanding of plurilingualism. Furthermore, by building a plurilingual repertoire, it is possible to take advantage of the language resources that learners have to take the initiative in language learning. By applying this concept, a teaching-learning method can be proposed so that learners can utilize each other's language and cultural resources in professor learning, which used only Korean, the target language in Korean education. Ethical Childbirth in the Posthuman Society Represented in Angela Chadwick’s XX
Sujin Kang 한국언어과학회 2020 한국언어과학회 학술대회 Vol.2020 No.10
With the technical development of procreation, having children intertwines with more various ethical issues. Angela Chadwick’s debut novel, XX (2018), explores ways her protagonist, Jules, undergoes social and inner conflicts while participating in the clinical trial for ovum-to-ovum fertilization. During this process, Jules experiences emotional changes through social interaction that Sarah Ahmed would describe as cultural politics of emotions. Coupling with Ahmed’s theory, this article indicates Jules marginalizes herself because of her unusual feelings toward childbirth. Nevertheless, Jules sublimates her compunction, and her narrative of resistance signposts ethical contemplation, which posthuman society might consider. In XX, Chadwick portrays a typical society that exercises techno-biopower with a standard on which body to attribute to community and which body to exclude. Sequentially, this execution collides with personal rights involved in childbirth. Regarding procreation, feminist theorists agree that women’s rights are separated into two: the right to reproduce and the right not to reproduce. Chadwick effectively describes how both rights are gradually subject to moral evaluation through the influence of a diverse range of media. As the argument for assisted reproductive technology escalates into the dynamics of society and individuals, Jules capitalizes her writing skills as a survival tactic. Her writing is part of the struggle, what Donna Haraway names as cyborg politics, to counter the ostracism and reconstruct the social order. Furthermore, Chadwick provides the critical reinterpretation of women’s bodies and maternal instincts. Focusing on the ethical repercussions of the diversified choice for procreation, this article illuminates how to cope with social tension as a part of the posthuman society.

In this paper, for the application of ultrasonic cleaners for cleaning dentures and transparent braces, Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Ni1/3 Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 [PMN-PNN-PZT] system ceramics were manufactured and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. Overall the best properties suitable for the device applications such as ultrasonic cleaner were obtained from the ceramics sintered at 920℃: bulk density of 7.8 g/㎤, the dielectric constant (εr) of 1,689, piezoelectric charge constant (d33) of 433 pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling factor (kp) of 0.64, mechanical quality factor (Qm) of 835, S11E of 13.37 (10-12 N/㎡), and Curie temperature of 315℃ By using the physical properties of this composition, the ultrasonic cleaner was designed and simulated using the commercial ATILA software. For the three-layered ceramics with the dimension of 25 mm × 25 mm × 2.5mm, an excellent displacement of 8.998 ×10-3 m) and the sound pressure of 147.68 dB were recorded.

Estuaries are connecting pathways where terrestrial carbon is transported to the ocean and environments where various biogeochemical cycles occur. It is essential to estimate the carbon flux across the land-sea continuum to accurately determine the global carbon budget. Additionally, understanding the carbon characteristics of estuarine environments provides valuable information for watershed management and coastal ecosystem conservation. This paper introduces research results in Korea regarding the organic carbon cycle in estuarine environments. In particular, it focuses on research results concerning organic carbon characteristics using stable and radioisotopes, and, based on this, suggests directions for future study.
Interplay between interleukin-6 signaling and the vascular endothelium in cytokine storms
Sujin Kang,Tadamitsu Kishimoto 생화학분자생물학회 2021 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.53 No.-
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a crucial role in host defense against infection and tissue injuries and is a bioindicator of multiple distinct types of cytokine storms. In this review, we present the current understanding of the diverse roles of IL-6, its receptors, and its signaling during acute severe systemic inflammation. IL-6 directly affects vascular endothelial cells, which produce several types of cytokines and chemokines and activate the coagulation cascade. Endothelial cell dysregulation, characterized by abnormal coagulation and vascular leakage, is a common complication in cytokine storms. Emerging evidence indicates that a humanized anti-IL-6 receptor antibody, tocilizumab, can effectively block IL-6 signaling and has beneficial effects in rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile systemic idiopathic arthritis, and Castleman’s disease. Recent work has also demonstrated the beneficial effect of tocilizumab in chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy-induced cytokine storms as well as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Here, we highlight the distinct contributions of IL-6 signaling to the pathogenesis of several types of cytokine storms and discusspotential therapeutic strategies for the management of cytokine storms, including those associated with sepsis and COVID-19.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, surface water samples were collected at sites located in the lowest reaches of closed (Geum) (i.e. with an estuary dam at the river mouth) and open (Seomjin) estuary systems between May 2016 and May 2018. We analyzed concentrations and stable isotopes of particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to assess OC sources, to estimate fluxes of riverine OC, and to assess some of the factors driving OC exports in these two contrasting Korean estuary systems. Our geochemical results suggest that the contribution of the phytoplankton-derived POC to the total POC pool was larger in the Geum River than in the Seomjin River. Notably, a heavy riverine algae bloom occurred in the Geum River in August 2016, resulting in a high carbon isotopic composition (−19.4‰) together with low POC/PN ratio (<10) and POC/Chl-<I>a</I> ratio (<100). In contrast, potential DOC sources in both the Geum River and the Seomjin River were a mixture of C3-derived forest soils and cropland organic matter. During the study period, the catchment area-normalized fluxes of POC and DOC were 0.40 × 10−3 tC/km2/yr and 6.5 × 10−2 tC/km2/yr in the Geum River and 5.2 × 10−4 tC/km2/yr and 8.6 × 10−4 tC/km2/yr in the Seomjin River, respectively. It appears that the POC flux was more weakly associated with the water discharge in the Geum River than in the Seomjin River, but the DOC fluxes were in general controlled by the water discharges in both rivers. Accordingly, the estuary dam of the Geum River might be one of the most strongly influencing factors on seasonal patterns in POC fluxes into the adjacent coastal seas, strongly modifying water residence times and thus biogeochemical processes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Temporal variations in the source and flux of riverine POC and DOC were investigated in Geum and Seomjin estuaries. </LI> <LI> The POC and DOC fluxes were estimated as 0.40 × 10-3 tC/km2/yr and 6.5 × 10-2 tC/km2/yr in the Geum River. </LI> <LI> The POC and DOC fluxes were estimated as 5.2 × 10-4 tC/km2/yr and 8.6 × 10-4 tC/km2/yr in the Seomjin River. </LI> <LI> The estuary dam mediates variations in the source and flux of POC in the Geum River. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>The intestinal immune system is constantly challenged by commensal bacteria; therefore, it must maintain quiescence via several regulatory mechanisms. Although intestinal macrophages (Ms) have been implicated in repression of excessive inflammation, it remains unclear how their functions are regulated during inflammation. In this study, we report that semaphorin 7A (Sema7A), a GPI-anchored semaphorin expressed in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), induces IL-10 production by intestinal M?s to regulate intestinal inflammation. Sema7A-deficient mice showed severe signs of dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis due to reduced intestinal IL-10 levels. We further identified CX3CR1(+)MHC class II(int)F4/80(hi)CD11b(hi) M?s as the main producers of IL-10 via αvβ1 integrin in response to Sema7A. Notably, Sema7A was predominantly expressed on the basolateral side of IECs, and its expression pattern was responsible for protective effects against dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis and IL-10 production by M?s during interactions between IECs and M?s. Furthermore, we determined that the administration of recombinant Sema7A proteins ameliorated the severity of colitis, and these effects were diminished by IL-10-blocking Abs. Therefore, our findings not only indicate that Sema7A plays crucial roles in suppressing intestinal inflammation through αvβ1 integrin, but also provide a novel mode of IL-10 induction via interactions between IECs and M?s.</P>
