<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Coastal areas provide important ecosystem services and affect local tourism. However, these areas are also sensitive to coastal erosion. The purpose of this study was to simulate a landscape plan scenario to improve the value of ecosystem services. The Shinduri coastal area in South Korea which has important natural resources, such as coastal sand dunes and coastal forests. To simulate landscape changes, this study was conducted using system dynamics. The study progressed in three stages: first, an analysis of the landscape change behavior model of Shinduri in its current state and an evaluation of the value of ecosystem services was conducted. Second, a simulation was carried out by applying a coastal erosion scenario. Third, a simulation of landscape change was run, and the value of ecosystem services was estimated, with regard to afforestation, thinning, weeding and coastal sand dune restoration plan scenarios. The results were as follows: in the absence of disturbances, current landscape change models are stable, and the value of ecosystem services, which was $859,259 in 2014, has increased over time. However, the value of ecosystem services decreased when subjected to a coastal erosion scenario. The evaluation of value of ecosystem services under afforestation, thinning, weeding and coastal sand dune plan scenarios revealed an optimal landscape plan that focuses on a coastal sand dune restoration plan suggesting restoration of these dunes at a rate of 27.05 ha per year. When the coastal sand dune restoration plan is applied, the value of ecosystem services increases to $ 895,474 by 2054. The coastal sand dune restoration plan should prioritize the protection of the coastal sand dune area as component of the restoration of coastal ecological resources in the area. These findings could contribute to the ecological management and improvement of coastal ecosystem services.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Coastal landscape change modeling and the value of ecosystem services estimation are proposed. </LI> <LI> The afforestation scenario and the weeding scenario do not improve the value of ecosystem services. </LI> <LI> The thinning scenario will not increase the value of ecosystem services in 2054 compared to 2014. </LI> <LI> The value of ecosystem services can be improved with the coastal sand dune restoration scenario. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The purpose of this study is to identify the specific causes of problems in the derelict space underneath overpasses and to create improvement strategies based on systems thinking from a long-term CPTED perspective. The research questions are as follows: 1) Which feedback relation does the structure between crime occurrence frequency and crime anxiety in derelict spaces underneath overpasses? 2) Which CPTED strategies can control the strategic points of derelict spaces underneath overpasses? Results of the study are as follows. First, “community cohesion in the life zone” was selected as strategic points. Second, to control the strategic points, “plant design”and “lighting design” were suggested for “Natural surveillance”. These CPTED strategies increase opportunities for “natural surveillance”and may prevent a public space. This study is a significant step towards understanding the causes of derelict spaces from a systems perspective. The results of this study indicate basic design guidelines for modifying the long-term use of derelict spaces underneath overpasses into more desirable public spaces.

Purpose: This study aimed to successfully improve the performance certification of aviation security equipment (PCS-AVSEC) in South Korea. Methods: The PCS-AVSEC in Korea and the United States was comparatively analyzed based on their respective aviation laws and organizational systems. Results: Results revealed that South Korea operated certification and test institutions separately compared with the United States, without organizations dedicated to security search technology research. South Korea could also encounter problems due to the new public management. Conclusion: Results from this study can be used for ensuring the security and reliability of aviation security equipment.
Housing affordability, borrowing constraints and tenure choice in Korea

This paper analyses the linkages between housing affordability and borrowing constraints, and the impact of the latter on housing tenure decisions in Korean cities during the period 2006–2016. The conventional aggregate measures of housing affordability provide a mixed picture. The price to income ratio (PIR) increased in major cities but the home purchase affordability, or repayment affordability improved between 2006 and 2016. Also, the access to mortgage finance increased substantially thanks to the expansion of mortgage supply, low interest rates and lenient macroprudential regulations. We investigate whether and how these changes affected household home purchases using the household-level micro data from the 2006 and 2016 Korea Housing Surveys. We construct the variable indicating the degree of borrowing constraint in terms of wealth each household faces and show that the number of borrowing-constrained households dropped significantly between 2006 and 2016. We then investigate the effect of the wealth constraint by including a measure of the degree of the borrowing constraint as an explanatory variable in the tenure choice equation, together with other key variables such as the cost of owning relative to renting. Estimation results confirm that, as expected, the propensity to home purchases declines if households are judged as wealth-constrained. It was also found that the detrimental effect of the wealth constraint on home ownership increased significantly, particularly for severely constrained households, while the homeownership rates for others improved during our study period. Our findings suggest that affordability measures that do not consider borrowing constraints may not be very helpful in gauging affordability of home purchases at the household level.
