Posterior Apophyseal Ring Fracture in Adult Lumbar Disc Herniation: An 8-Year Experience in Minimally Invasive Surgical Management of 48 Cases

        Shuo Yuan,Qichao Wu,Lei Zang,Ning Fan,Peng Du,Aobo Wang,Tianyi Wang,Fangda Si,Jian Li,Xiaochuan Kong 대한척추신경외과학회 2022 Neurospine Vol.19 No.3

Objective: Posterior apophyseal ring fracture (PARF) is an uncommon disorder that is usually accompanied by lumbar disc herniation (LDH). The aim of this study to describe the 8-year experience of performing minimally invasive treatment of PARF, giving particular attention to surgical technique and clinical outcome. Methods: We reviewed 1,324 consecutive patients with LDH seen in our department between 2013 and 2020. Forty-eight patients (3.63%) were enrolled who were diagnosed with PARF associated with LDH and underwent transforminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD). Mean duration of the final postoperative follow-up was 5.1 years. The control group was comprised of 50 patients diagnosed with LDH without PARF at the same facility. Data on clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: The mean operation time in the PARF group was 105.4 minutes, which was longer than the mean operation time of the control group (83.9 minutes) (p = 0.001). Surgical complications, including dural tears (6.3%) and surgical instrument rupture (4.2%) were more common in the PARF group (p = 0.025). However, there was no significant difference in the proportion of excellent and good results and recurrence rates between the LDH patients with and those without PARF, respectively. Conclusion: TELD is a safe and effective minimally invasive approach for the treatment of PARF. However, minimally invasive techniques may require longer operation time and steeper learning curve for inexperienced surgeons. The separation and removal of bone fragments, a key step in the procedure, requires patience and care to prevent rupture, residual surgical instruments, and leakage of cerebrospinal fluid.

Influence of creep on dynamic behavior of concrete filled steel tube arch bridges

        Yuan-Feng Wang,Yi-Shuo Ma,Li Su,Shengqi Mei 국제구조공학회 2016 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.21 No.1

Concrete creep, while significantly changing the static behaviors of concrete filled steel tube (CFST) structures, do alter the structures' dynamic behaviors as well, which is studied quite limitedly. The attempt to investigate the influence of concrete creep on the dynamic property and response of CFST arch bridges was made in this paper. The mechanism through which creep exerts its influence was analyzed first; then a predicative formula was proposed for the concrete elastic modulus after creep based on available test data; finally a numerical analysis for the effect of creep on the dynamic behaviors of a long-span half-through CFST arch bridge was conducted. It is demonstrated that the presence of concrete creep increases the elastic modulus of concrete, and further magnifies the seismic responses of the displacement and internal force in some sections of the bridge. This influence is related closely to the excitation and the structure, and should be analyzed case-by-case.

Reinforced high-strength concrete square columns confined by aramid FRP jackets. part I: experimental study

        Yuan-feng Wang,Yi-Shuo Ma,Han-liang Wu 국제구조공학회 2011 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.11 No.6

Although retrofitting and strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns by wrapping fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become a popular technique in civil engineering, the study on reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) columns is still not sufficient. The objective of these companion papers is to investigate the mechanical properties of reinforced HSC square columns confined by aramid FRP (AFRP) jackets under concentric compressive loading. In the part I of these companion papers, an experiment was conducted on 54 confined RC specimens and nine unconfined plain specimens, the considered parameters were the concrete strength, the thickness of AFRP jackets, and the form of AFRP wrapping. The experimental process and results are presented in detail. Subsequently, some discussions on the confinement effect, failure modes, strength, and ductility of the columns are carried out.

A New Genetic Algorithm-based Topology Optimization Method of Tensegrity Tori

Shuo Ma,Xing-Fei Yuan,Sheng-Da Xie 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.5

This study mainly focuses on a new Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based topology optimization method of tensegrity tori with the ring stiffness set as the optimization objective. To do the structural analysis of self-equilibrated tensegrity tori, a modified stiffness matrix based form-finding method is introduced. A form finding procedure is adopted to generate new tensegrity tori in constant mass with only topology and rest length given. An innovative encoding scheme in GA is proposed to represent tensegrity tori with new sets of topology, prestress, and configuration. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method is efficient in the topology optimization of tensegrity tori with high ring stiffness.

      • Association of GSTP1 and RRM1 Polymorphisms with the Response and Toxicity of Gemcitabine-cisplatin Combination Chemotherapy in Chinese Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

        Yuan, Zhi-Jun,Zhou, Wen-Wu,Liu, Wei,Wu, Bai-Ping,Zhao, Jin,Wu, Wei,He, Yi,Yang, Shuo,Su, Jing,Luo, Yi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.10

Background: Previous studies showed that genetic polymorphisms of glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) were involved in glutathione metabolism and genetic polymorphisms of ribonucleotide reductase (RRM1) were correlated with DNA synthesis. Here we explored the effects of these polymorphisms on the chemosensitivity and clinical outcome in Chinese non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with gemcitabine-cisplatin regimens. Materials and Methods: DNA sequencing was used to evaluate genetic polymorphisms of GSTP1 Ile105Val and RRM1 C37A-T524C in 47 NSCLC patients treated with gemcitabine-cisplatin regimens. Clinical response was evaluated according to RECIST criteria after 2 cycles of chemotherapy and toxicity was assessed by 1979 WHO criteria (acute and subacute toxicity graduation criteria in chemotherapeutic agents). Results: There was no statistical significance between sensitive and non-sensitive groups regarding the genotype frequency distribution of GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism (p>0.05). But for RRM1 C37A-T524C genotype, sensitive group had higher proportion of high effective genotype than non-sensitive group (p=0.009). And according to the joint detection of GSTP1 Ile105Val and RRM1 C37A-T524C polymorphisms, the proportion of type A (A/A + high effective genotype) was significantly higher in sensitive group than in non-sensitive group (p=0.009). Toxicity showed no correlation with the genotypes between two groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: Compared with single detection of genetic polymorphisms of GSTP1 Ile105Val or RRM1 C37A-T524C, joint detection of both may be more helpful for patients with NSCLC to receive gemcitabine-cisplatin regimens as the first-line chemotherapy. Especially, genetic polymorphism of RRM1 is more likely to be used as an important biomarker to predict the response and toxicity of gemcitabine-cisplatin combination chemotherapy in NSCLC.

Crack Resistance and Strength Properties of Red Clay Modified with Lignocellulose and Guar gum

        Hong-Yuan Fu,Guang-Tao Yu,Qian-Feng Gao,Ling Zeng,Shuo-Peng Cao 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.10

Desiccation cracking is a common problem of red clay under wet and dry conditions. The presence of cracks could reduce soil strength properties, which is the major reason for shallow failure of red clay slopes. This study aims to propose some additives to improve the crack resistance as well as the strength of red clay. To this end, three natural fibers and three natural gels were primarily selected to modify red clay. Desiccation crack tests were conducted to identify the best fiber and gel in terms of crack resistance. Then, direct shear tests and uniaxial tensile tests were performed on the soil specimens modified by the best fiber and gel to determine the optimal dosages regarding strength improvements. The results demonstrated that natural gels reduced the crack resistance of red clay, while natural fibers could enhance the crack resistance. Lignocellulose was the best additive in improving the crack resistance of red clay, and the modified effect was positively correlated with the fiber dosage. Adding 1.5% lignocellulose into red clay could reduce the crack rate from 2.19% to 0.30%, with a reduction of 0.86 times. The tensile strength, shear strength and its parameters of lignocellulose-modified red clay showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing with increasing lignocellulose dosage. At the optimal lignocellulose dosage of 0.75%, the shear strength and tensile strength were increased by 44.63% and 18.21%, respectively. The strength of red clay modified by both lignocellulose and guar gum was positively correlated with the dosage of guar gum, and the desirable dosage of guar gum was 1.0%. In engineering practice, the wet red clay mixed with 0.75% lignocellulose and grass seeds can be employed as planting soil and is sprayed uniformly onto the slope surface after excavation using a spraying planting machine. To further improve the strength of the planting soil, 1.0% guar gum solution can be sprayed on the soil surface. The findings could provide useful guidance for the protection of red clay slopes.

        Yang, Shuo,Zhang, Jing,Jiang, Yang,Xu, Yuan Qing,Jin, Xiao,Yan, Su Mei,Shi, Bin Lin Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2021 Animal Bioscience Vol.34 No.7

Objective: This research aimed to study the effects of Artemisia argyi flavonoids (AAF) supplemented in diets on the growth performance and immune function of broiler chickens challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Methods: A total of one hundred and ninety-two 1-d-old broiler chicks were assigned into 4 treatment groups, which were, respectively, fed a basal diet (control), fed a diet with 750 mg/kg AAF, fed a basal diet, and challenged with LPS, fed a diet with 750 mg/kg AAF, and challenged with LPS. Each treatment had six pens with 8 chicks per pen. On days 14, 16, 18, 20 (stress phase I) and 28, 30, 32, 34 (stress phase II), broilers were injected with LPS (500 ㎍/kg body weight) or an equivalent amount of saline. Results: The results demonstrated that dietary AAF significantly improved the body weight (d 21) and alleviated the decrease of average daily gain in broilers challenged with LPS on d 21 and d 35 (p<0.05). Dietary AAF increased bursa fabricius index, and dramatically attenuated the elevation of spleen index caused by LPS on d 35 (p<0.05). Furthermore, serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration decreased with AAF supplementation on d 21 (p<0.05). Diet treatment and LPS challenge exhibited a significant interaction for the concentration of IL-1β (d 21) and IL-6 (d 35) in serum (p<0.05). Additionally, AAF supplementation mitigated the increase of IL-1β, IL-6 in liver and spleen induced by LPS on d 21 and 35 (p<0.05). This study also showed that AAF supplementation significantly reduced the expression of IL-1β (d 21) and nuclear transcription factor kappa-B p65 (d 21 and 35) in liver (p<0.05), and dietary AAF and LPS treatment exhibited significant interaction for the gene expression of IL-6 (d 21), toll like receptor 4 (d 35) and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (d 35) in spleen (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, AAF could be used as a potential natural immunomodulator to improve growth performance and alleviate immune stress in broilers challenged with LPS.

Adaptive Event-triggered Control for Networked Switched T-S Fuzzy Systems Subject to False Data Injection Attacks

        Yiwen Qi,Shuo Yuan,Xin Wang 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2020 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.18 No.10

This paper is concerned with the problem of adaptive event-triggered control for networked switched T-S fuzzy systems under false data injection attacks. In order to reduce unnecessary data transmission, an adaptive event-triggering mechanism is proposed, which can dynamically change triggering conditions based on system performance needs. In particular, due to the consideration of network safety, the system will be subjected to the impacts from both attack delays and network transmission delays. Then, by a delay system transformation approach,a time-delay closed-loop switched T-S fuzzy system is obtained. Moreover, by utilizing average dwell time technique, stability conditions are developed for the closed-loop system with the adaptive event-triggering mechanism and false data injection attacks. In addition, a co-design of adaptive event-triggering parameters and controller gains is given. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the designed method.

Efficient adsorptive elimination of organic pollutants from aqueous solutions on ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH nanoadsorbents: Adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic study

Xinling Zhang,Ning Yuan,Shuo Xu,Yi Li,Qibao Wang 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.111 No.-

The removal of organic pollutants was examined by new zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH) nanoadsorbents, which were preparedvia controlling the reaction sequence of MWCNTs-COOH with the precursors of ZIF-8. Structuralmorphology and chemical composition characterizations confirmed the successful preparation of ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH nanoadsorbents. The obtained samples manifested a preferable adsorption capacityfor Congo red with the maximum adsorption capacity of 1185.58 mg g1 with an adsorption removal rateof 97.93% at equilibrium adsorption. Further analyses indicated that the adsorption process conformed tothe pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic analyseswere depicted as endothermic, entropy-increasing, and spontaneous. The effects of pH value, interferingions, and dosage on the adsorption properties were systematically explored. The nanoadsorbent can beexpediently reused for eight cycles without a prominent reduction in adsorption activity. The improvedperformance and high reusability can be ascribed to the increasing specific surface, the presence of electrostaticinteraction, hydrogen bonding, and p–p interaction between ZIF-8/MWCNTs-COOH and organicmolecules. In addition, the prepared composites also showed a better adsorption performance for tetracyclinewith the equilibrium adsorption capacity of 471.22 mg g1 compared to pure ZIF-8 and MWCNTs-COOH.

Reinforced high-strength concrete square columnsconfined by aramid FRP jackets. part II: modeling

        Han-liang Wu,Yuan-feng Wang,Yi-shuo Ma 국제구조공학회 2011 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.11 No.4

Based on the experimental data presented in part I of these companion papers, a semi-empirical model is proposed for axial stress-strain curves of reinforced high-strength concrete square columns confined by aramid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets. Additionally, a three-dimensional finite element model is developed to simulate the mechanical behaviors of the columns. In the finite element model, both material nonlinear and contact nonlinear are taken into account. Moreover, the influence of contact nonlinear (i.e., the end friction on the contact surface between test machines and specimens) is investigated deeply. Predictions from both the semi-empirical model and the finite element model agree with the experimental results, and it is also demonstrated that the friction coefficient of end friction notably affect the properties of columns when it ranges from 0.00 to 0.25.
