      • Monoclonal Antibody against α-Actinin 4 from Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells Inhibits Endothelium-Dependent Vasorelaxation

        <P>Abstract</P><P><B><I>Background:</I></B> This study was attempted to identify new molecules expressed on the plasma membrane of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) using monoclonal antibody-based proteomics technology and to determine the effect of the identified antibody on vascular reactivity. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> Twenty-two antibodies were developed from rats inoculated with HUVECs, and their effects were determined by observing vascular reactivity. <B><I>Results: </I></B>Among the 22 antibodies, the C-7 antibody significantly inhibited endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in response to acetylcholine (ACh) but not to histamine. Moreover, the C-7 antibody did not affect norepinephrine-induced contraction in either the endothelium-intact or -denuded aorta. A proteomics study involving immunoprecipitation of the C-7 antibody with biotinylated HUVECs showed that this antibody binds to plasma membrane proteins corresponding to immunoglobulin heavy chain (VHDJ region), chaperonin-containing T-complex polypeptide 1 and α-actinin 4. The muscarinic M3 ACh receptor and α-actinin 4 were colocalized on the plasma membrane of HUVECs, and the colocalization was found to increase in response to ACh and was inhibited by pretreatment with the C-7 antibody. <B><I>Conclusions: </I></B>These results demonstrate that monoclonal C-7 antibody exerts an inhibitory effect on endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation induced by ACh and that this response may at least partially result from the inhibition of α-actinin 4.</P><P>Copyright © 2013 S.       • A case of trichoblastoma with plasma cell infiltration

        Trichoblastoma is a rare benign follicular neoplasm, presenting as solitary, dark colored nodule on the head or neck. It can arises within a nevus sebaceous and can also coexist with BCC. Meanwhile, cutaneous plasma cell infiltration can be seen in various disorders, including inflammatory disease and infectious diseases such as syphilis and deep fungal infections. It can also occur with lymph node disease and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. A 53-year-old woman presented with scaly erythematous plaque on left cheek. Skin biopsy specimens were taken by punch biopsy. Smooth-bordered large basaloid proliferation and fibrotic stroma were seen in entire dermis. Interestingly, mixed inflammatory cell infiltrations were seen in upper dermis and they were mainly plasma cells. There was no evidence of other organ involvement and infection in laboratory tests. Preceding unnoticeable infection might independently leave a plasma cell infiltration regardless of trichoblastoma. However, we cannot exclude the possibility of association between trichoblastoma and plasma cell infiltration. She was diagnosed with trichoblastoma with plasma cell infiltration based on histological findings. In our literature review, there was no reported study about the association between plasma cell infiltration and adnexal neoplasm except syringocystadenoma papilliferum. Herein we report a peculiar case of trichoblastoma with plasma cell infiltration.

        Growth and Physological Characteristics of Seven Garden Perennials to Flooding

        본 연구에서는 국내 빗물정원과 같은 소규모 저류지공원 적합한 식물을 선발하기 위하여 수변 또는 척박지 녹화용으로 활용되고 있는 초화류 7종을 대상으로 일정 수위를 항시 유지하는 저면 침수와 식물 기부가 물에 잠긴 상태로 3일간 간 침수처리를 반복하는 완전 침수 두 가지 수분 상황에서 식물의 생장 특성을 조사하였다. 습지식물인 갈대는 침수처리에 의한 생장과 생리적 차이를 보이지 않았고, 억새와 리아트리스는 침수처리에 의해 광합성량은 저면관수 시 21.4%, 침수처리 시 60.4%로 낮아졌으나 수분이용효율은 차이를 나타내지 않아 침수 내성종임을 알 수 있었다. 벌개미취와 해국은 침수처리에 의해 생장이 저조했고 광합성량은 82.7% 이상 감소하고 수분이용효율도 29.2% 증가하여 수분스트레스 상태였으나 이후 정상적인 관수에 의해 광합성량과 수분이용 효율이 회복되어 빗물정원 식물로 적합한 식물임을 알 수 있었다. 무늬쑥부 쟁이는 저면침수에서는 광합성효율은 낮아졌으나 수분이용효율은 차이가 없어 습지에 적합하나, 완전침수에서는 수분스트레스가 79.8%로 매우 높았고 침수 후 회복율도 낮아 완전침수에는 적합하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. With the aim of selecting plants suitable rain gardens and smal reservoir parks where dry and wet spaces are repeatedly, this study examined growth characteristics of Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Liatris spicata, Aster koraiensis, Aster spathulifolius, Aster ageratoides ‘Variegata’, and Carex maculate. This flooding experiment were examined under 2 moisture conditions: base flooding with a 30% water level maintained and over flooding where plants were repeatedly submerged for 3 days and non replenishment for 4days under water. M. sinensis and L. spicata showed a decrease in the amount of photosynthesis by 21.4% when being base flood and by 60.4% when being over flood, but it did not show any difference in water use efficiency, indicating that is a water stress tolerant species. A. spathulifolius and A. koraiensis showed poor growth when being submerged. During the period, the amount of photosynthesis decreased by over 82.7% and moisture use efficiency increased by 29.2%. They were under water stress but the amount of photosynthesis and water use efficiency were recovered later by normal watering, indicating that they are suitable for rain gardens. A. ageratoides showed a decrease in the amount of photosynthesis when being base flooded but did not show any difference in moisture use efficiency. Their water stress when being over flooded was 79.8% very high and their recovery rate after being flooded was also low, which indicates that they are not suitable for over flood spaces.

        Primary Malignant Pericardial Mesothelioma Presenting as Acute Pericarditis

        We report on a 21-year-old man with fever, dyspnea, and pleuritic chest pain. An electrocardiography showed ST elevation in multiple lead and thoracic echocardiography revealed moderate pericardial effusion. He was initially diagnosed with acute pericarditis,and treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and colchicines with clinical and laboratory improvement. After 1 month of medication, his symptoms recurred. An echocardiography showed constrictive physiology and the patient was treated with steroid on the top of current medication. The patient had been well for 7 months until dyspnea and edema developed, when an echocardiography showed marked increased pericardial thickness and constriction. Pericardial biopsy was performed and primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma was diagnosed. Malignancy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent pericarditis.

        A Checklist of the Basidiomycetous Macrofungi and a Record of Five New Species from Mt. Oseo in Korea

        Basidiomycetous macrofungi play important roles in maintaining forest ecosystems via carbon cycling and the mobilization of nitrogen and phosphorus. To understand the impact of human activity on macrofungi, an ongoing project at the Korea National Arboretum is focused on surveying the macrofungi in unexploited areas. Mt. Oseo was targeted in this survey because the number of visitors to this destination has been steadily increasing, and management and conservation plans for this destination are urgently required. Through 5 field surveys of Mt. Oseo from April to October 2012, 116 specimens of basidiomycetous macrofungi were collected and classified. The specimens were identified to the species level by analyzing their morphological characteristics and their DNA sequence data. A total of 80 species belonging to 57 genera and 25 families were identified. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to identify five of these species-Artomyces microsporus, Hymenopellis raphanipes, Pholiota abietis, Phylloporus brunneiceps, and Sirobasidium magnum-in Korea.

        Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Associated with Viviparous Germination in Rice

        The viviparous germination (VG) with lodging caused the yield reduction and quality deterioration in rice. We carried out the evaluation of VG tolerance (on the 40th day after heading) and mapping QTLs associated with VG tolerance using the recombinant inbred lines (M/G RILs) from a cross between Milyang 23 (japonica/indica) and Gihobyeo (japonica). The VG rates of Milyang 23 and Gihobyeo were 0.0 and 7.0%, respectively. The averaged VG rate of 162 M/G RILs was 7.7%, and their range was from 0.0 to 50.9%. Of the 162 RILs, 144 lines were tolerant less than 10%, and 18 lines were susceptible more than 10%. Using the M/G RIL Map, three QTLs associated with the viviparous trait were detected on chromosome 2 (qVG 2-1 and qVG 2-2) and 8 (qVG 8). qVG 2-1 was linked to RM 32D and RZ 166, and had LOD score of 2.97. qVG 2-2 was tightly linked to E13M59.119-Pl and E13M59.M003-P2, and showed higher LOD score of 3.41. qVG 8 was linked to RM33 and TCT116, and had LOD score of 2.67. The total phenotypic variance explained by the three QTLs was about 24.4% of the total variance in the population. The detection of new QTLs associated with VG tolerance will provide important informations for the seed dormancy, low temperature germination, or comparative genetics.

      • A case of basal cell carcinoma of the nail bed

        Basal cell carcinoma is widely regarded as the most common malignant skin tumor and usually seen in head and neck. Ralely, nail bed and nail folds can be atypical sites for BCC. The initial diagnosis of chronic paronychia lead to delay in diagnosis so that taking history and adequate biopsy are essential in making timely diagnosis. Previous study reported that the BCC of nail bed was more often on the fingers than on the toes and had a slight predilection to occur in men. Ulceration was the most common presentation of nail unit BCC, which was noted in more than one-half of patients. Mohs micrographic surgery with second intension healing is effective to make excellent cosmetic results. The incidence of metastasis is extremely rare and same as other BCCs, which has been reported with incidence rates of 0.0028% to 0.55%. A 55-year-old man presented with ill-defined 0.8 cm sized pigmented lesion on left thumb nail bed without trauma history. Duration of the lesion was 1 month. Specimen showed that basophilic cells formed budding tumor proliferations extending from the undersurface of the epidermis to the dermis. HMB45 and S-100 showed negative results. He has no any other past history and laboratory study showed normal findings. The patient was finally diagnosed as BCC of the nail bed and referred to plastic surgeon for wide excision and full thickness skin graft. Herein we report a relatively rare case of BCC of the nail bed.
