We examined the efficacy of the East West Connection (EWC) program for East Asian American youth (N = 51) using a quasi-experimental design. Participants were recruited from several churches. While our study showed that the participation in EWC did not significantly increase bicultural competence, the regression analyses did reveal that bicultural competence was a significant predictor of well-being. We discuss the implications of the results for future intervention development and provide recommendations for future research.
The Rise and Fall of Anti-Corruption in North Korea
2022 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.22 No.1
North Korea is widely seen as having among the most corrupt governments in the world. However, the Kim family regime has not always been so accepting of government wrongdoing. Drawing on archival evidence, this study shows that Kim Il-sung saw corruption as a threat to economic development and launched campaigns to curb it throughout the 1950s. I find that these campaigns were at least somewhat successful, and they contributed to post-Korean War reconstruction and rapid development afterwards. So when and why did the regime shift from combating corruption to embracing it? I argue that changes in the country's economic system following the crisis of the 1990s, especially de facto marketization, made corruption more beneficial to the regime both as a source of revenue and as an escape valve for public discontent. This study's findings contribute to our understanding of the politics of corruption control in authoritarian regimes.

Minimally invasive spine surgery reduces tissue dissection and retraction, decreasing the morbidity associated with traditional open spine surgery by decreasing blood loss, blood transfusion, complications, and pain. One of the key challenges with a minimally invasive approach is achieving consistent posterior fusion. Although advantageous in all fusion surgeries, solid posterior fusion is particularly important in spinal deformity, revisions, and fusions without anterior column support. A minimally invasive surgical approach accomplished without sacrificing the quality of the posterior fusion has the potential to decrease both short- and long-term complications compared to the traditional open techniques. Innovations in navigated and robotic-assisted spine surgery continue to address this need. In this article, we will outline the feasibility of achieving posterior facet fusion using the Mazor X Stealth Edition Robotic Guidance System.

Background Fellowship training is becoming more popular in plastic surgery, with over half of residents pursuing advanced training. Here, we investigate how clinical and research fellowship training impacts career trajectory and scholastic achievement in academic plastic surgery. Methods Plastic surgery faculty members, from programs recognized by the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons, were identified using institutional Web sites. Data extracted included faculty demographics, training history, academic positions, and research productivity. Continuous and categorical variables were compared using t-tests and chi-square, respectively. Results In total, 949 faculty members were included, with 657 (69%) having completed fellowship training. Integrated program residents were more likely to complete a fellowship when compared with independent residents (p < 0.0001). Fellowship trained faculty were more likely to have graduated from a higher ranked residency program, in terms of both overall and research reputation (p = 0.005 and p = 0.016, respectively). When controlling for years in practice, there was no difference found in number of publications, Hirsch index (h-index), or National Institutes of Health funding between faculty between the two cohorts (p > 0.05). In a subanalysis comparing hand, craniofacial, microsurgery, and research fellowships, those who completed a research fellowship had higher h-indices and were more likely to reach full professor status (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). Fellowship training had no effect on being promoted to Chief/Chair of departments (p = 0.16).Conclusion Fellowship training is common among academic plastic surgeons. In this study, both clinical and research fellowships were associated with various aspects of academic success. However, fellowship training alone did not affect attainment of leadership positions.
Determinants of Banks' CDS Spreads and Policy Implications
2011 Seoul journal of economics Vol.24 No.4
This paper analyzes the determinants of CDS spreads of major international banks using the data period of 2005~2009, which includes the global financial crisis. Taking into account that CDS spreads of Korean banks, for example, rose sharply although they were financially solid preceding the crisis period, we consider macroeconomic variables that reflect the economic fundamentals and foreign liquidity conditions of the economy, in addition to the financial indicators of banks. Empirical results, based on a panel regression analysis of 40 major international banks, shows that macroeconomic variables such as the fiscal balance, foreign reserves, foreign exposure, and financial indicators such as bank's capital, loan-to-asset ratio, and loan-todeposit ratio matter significantly in determining banks' CDS spreads. The results also show that certain variables became significant during the crisis period, which implies that it is important to manage and monitor certain variables during such periods.
