Antiferromagnetic Transition in Ru2CrSi in Magnetic Fields

        Masahiko Hiroi,Kaori Uchida,Iduru Shigeta,Masakazu Ito,Keiichi Koyama,Shojiro Kimura,Kazuo Watanabe 한국물리학회 2013 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.62 No.12

In the Heusler compound Ru2CrSi, an antiferromagnetic transition at TN =14 K was revealed byspecific heat and magnetization measurements. In this study the electrical resistivity is measured inmagnetic fields up to 14.5 T, and the antiferromagnetic transition in magnetic fields is investigated. In the temperature dependence of the resistivity at zero field, a clear dip at 15 K and a humpwith a maximum at 9 K are observed. This dip is considered to be due to the antiferromagnetictransition. With increasing magnetic field, the magnitude of the resistivity slightly increases aroundTN; i.e., a positive magnetoresistance is observed. The temperature dependence of the resistivityis hardly affected by increasing the magnetic field. The transition temperature decreases only by 0.3 K even with applying 14.5 T. These results demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic state inRu2CrSi is unusually unaffected by a strong magnetic field.

      • Bioavailability of Gentamicin from a New Rectal Dosage Vehicle in Rabbits

        WATANABE, YOSHITERU,MATSUMOTO, YOSHIAKI,KIRIYAMA, MIYUKI,KAKUHARI, TAKESHI,MATSUMOTO, MITSUO,KU, YOUNG-SOON,OBAYASHI, MASAHIKO,ANJOU, SAEKO 梨花女子大學校 藥學硏究所 1994 藥學硏究論文集 Vol.- No.4

The bioavailability of gentamicin (GM), a model drug of aminoglycoside antibiotics, from a new rectal dosage vehicle, hollow-type suppositories containing GM and fatty acids (sodium salts) with different acyl chain lengths in their chemical structure, was investigated in rabbits. Fatty acids with chain lengths varying from 6 to 12 carbon atoms (C_6-C_12) enhanced GM absorption in the rectum. Consequently, it was observed that an optimum length of the acyl chain of between C_8 and C_10 enhanced the extent of GM absorption. The absorption-enhancing effect of valproic acid (VPA), a C_8 branched-chain molecule, was less than that of octanoic acid (OA), a C_8 straight-chain molecule. Branching of the acyl chain of the fatty acid seems to decrease the absorption-enhancing effect. This study demonstrates that the C_8- C_10 acyl group appears to play an essential role in the mechanism of GM absorption enhancement. The hollow-type suppositories containing GM and fatty acids, particularly decanoic acid (DA) and OA, are one of the most promising and practical dosage vehicles for rectal delivery of aminoglycoside antibiotics such as GM, instead of the use of injection dosage form.

      • Excellent Crystallinity of Ba Ferrite Layers Deposited on Pt(111) Underlayers

        Matsushita, Nobuhiro,Feng, Jie,Watanabe, Koh,Ichinose, Makoto,Nakagawa, Shigeki,Naoe, Masahiko The Korean Ceramic Society 2000 The Korean journal of ceramics Vol.6 No.3

A magnetoplumbite type of Ba ferrite(BaM) layers were deposited on Pt(111) and Pt(200) layers, and their c-axis orientation and magnetic characteristics were compared each other. The as-deposited BaM layer on Pt(111) one at the substrate temperature $T_s$ above $500^{\circ}C$ revealed remarkable c-axis orientation. The saturation magnetization 4$\piM_s$ and the perpendicular coercivity $H_{c⊥}$ of the films as-deposited at $T_s$ of $600^{\circ}C$ were 4.0kG and 2.5kOe, respectively. On the other hand, BaM ferrite layer deposited on Pt(200) layer at $T_s$ as relatively low as $500^{\circ}C$ also revealed weak c-axis orientation as well as (107) one and the films as-deposited at $T_s$ of $600^{\circ}C$ exhibited 4$\piMs_{and}$ $H_{c⊥}$ of 2.8kG and 2.5kOe, respectively. It was suggested that although chemical activity of Pt surface was effective for the formation of BaM crystallites, the lattice matching was also important for obtaining BaM layer with good c-axis orientation and large perpendicular anisotropy.sotropy.

Early Phase Functional Recovery after Spinal Intramedullary Tumor Resection Could Predict Ambulatory Capacity at 1 Year after Surgery

        Suzuki Tetsuya,Tsuji Osahiko,Ichikawa Masahiko,Ishii Ryota,Nagoshi Narihito,Kawakami Michiyuki,Watanabe Kota,Matsumoto Morio,Tsuji Tetsuya,Fujiwara Toshiyuki,Nakamura Masaya 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.2

Study Design: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study with a university hospital setting.Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the short-term course of physical function and walking ability after intramedullary spinal cord tumor (ISCT) resection and predict walking independence 1 year after surgery.Overview of Literature: Although several reports have shown the postoperative functional prognosis of spinal intramedullary tumors with long-term follow-up, no reports have identified the predictors associated with the functional outcome at an early stage. Methods: A total of 79 individuals who underwent ISCT resection at our institute between 2014 and 2019 were enrolled in the study, whose preoperative walking state was independent ambulator regardless of cane support with the Functional Independence Measure Locomotor Scale (FIM-L) score of ≥6. The FIM-L, the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) motor and sensory scores in the lower extremities, and the Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury II (WISCI II) were assessed for walking independence, lower-limb function, and walking ability, respectively. These evaluations were performed at 4 time points: preoperatively, 1 week (1W), 2 weeks (2W), and 1 year after surgery. Results: In the early phase after surgery, 71% and 43% of the participants were nonindependent ambulators at 1W and 2W, respectively. Histopathology indicated that patients with solid tumors (ependymoma, astrocytoma, or lipoma) showed significantly lower indices at 1W and 2W than those with vascular tumors (hemangioblastoma or cavernous hemangioma). Regarding tumor location, thoracic cases exhibited poorer lower-limb function at 1W and 2W and poorer walking ability at 2W than cervical cases. According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, 2 WISCI II points at 2W had the highest sensitivity (100%) and specificity (92.2%) in predicting the level of walking independence at 1 year postoperatively (the area under the ROC curve was 0.99 (95% confidence interval, 0.93–1.00).Conclusions: The higher the lower-limb function scores in the early phase, the better the improvement in walking ability is predicted 1 year after ISCT resection.

Adsorption behavior of platinum-group metals and Co-existing metal ions from simulated high-level liquid waste using HONTA and Crea impregnated adsorbent

        Osawa Naoki,Kim Seong-Yun,Kubota Masahiko,Wu Hao,Watanabe Sou,Ito Tatsuya,Nagaishi Ryuji 한국원자력학회 2024 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.56 No.3

The volume and toxicity of radioactive waste can be decreased by separating the components of high-level liquid waste according to their properties. An impregnated silica-based adsorbent was prepared in this study by combining N,N,N′,N′,N″,N″-hexa-n-octylnitrilotriacetamide (HONTA) extractant, N′,N′-di-n-hexyl-thiodiglycolamide (Crea) extractant, and macroporous silica polymer composite particles (SiO2–P). The performance of platinum-group metals adsorption and separation on prepared (HONTA + Crea)/SiO2–P adsorbent was then assessed together with that of co-existing metal ions by batch-adsorption and chromatographic separation studies. From the batch-adsorption experiment results, (HONTA + Crea)/SiO2–P adsorbent showed high adsorption performance of Pd(II) owing to an affinity between Pd(II) and Crea extractant based on the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases theory. Additionally, significant adsorption performance was observed toward Zr(IV) and Mo(VI). Compared with studies using the Crea extractant, the high adsorption performance of Zr(IV) and Mo(VI) is attributed to the HONTA extractant. As revealed from the chromatographic experiment results, most of Pd(II) was recovered from the feed solution using 0.2 M thiourea in 0.1 M HNO3. Additionally, the possibility of recovery of Zr(IV), Mo(VI), and Re(VII) was observed using the (HONTA + Crea)/SiO2–P adsorbent.

Neurobehavioral effects of the exposure to mercury vapor and methylmercury during postnatal period on mice

        Lee Jin-Yong,Yoshida Minoru,Satoh Masahiko,Watanabe Chiho 한국독성학회 2024 Toxicological Research Vol.40 No.1

In this study, we investigated the neurobehavioral alterations and modifications of gene expression in the brains of female mice exposed to low-level mercury vapor and/or methylmercury during postnatal development. The mice were exposed to low-level mercury vapor at a mean concentration of 0.094 mg/m3 and supplied with tap water containing 5 ppm methylmercury from postnatal day 11 to 12 weeks of age. Behavioral analyses were performed at 17 weeks of age. Total locomotor activity in the open field test and the retention trial performance in the passive avoidance test were significantly reduced in the combined exposure group compared with those in the control group. The differences in locomotor activity and performance in the retention trial at 17 weeks were no longer detected at 45 weeks. These results suggest that the effect of aging on the behavioral abnormalities resulting from postnatal exposure to mercury complexes are not significant. In the microarray analysis of brains in the combined exposure group, the gene expression levels of Ano2 and Sgk1 were decreased. Real-time RT-PCR analysis confirmed these changes caused by combined mercury exposure, showing significant downregulation of Ano2 and Sgk1 in the cerebrum. These genes play key roles in the brain as a calcium-activated chloride channel and as a kinase that responds to cellular stress, respectively. Our findings provide insight into the neurobehavioral changes caused by combined mercury exposure.

Wnt3a and wnt5a as Potential Chondrogenic Stimulators for Nucleus Pulposus Cell Induction: A Comprehensive Review

        Tibo Nico Emmie Volleman,Jordy Schol,Kosuke Morita,Daisuke Sakai,Masahiko Watanab 대한척추신경외과학회 2020 Neurospine Vol.17 No.1

Low back pain remains a highly prevalent pathology engendering a tremendous socioeconomic burden. Low back pain is generally associated with intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, a process involving the deterioration of nucleus pulpous (NP) cells and IVD matrix. Scientific interest has directed efforts to restoring cell numbers as a strategy to enable IVD regeneration. Currently, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are being explored as cell therapy agents, due to their easy accessibility and differentiation potential. For enhancement of MSCs, growth factor supplementation is commonly applied to induce differentiation towards a chondrogenic (NP) cell phenotype. The wnt signaling pathways play a crucial role in chondrogenesis, nonetheless, literature appears to present controversies with regard to wnt3a and wnt5a for the induction of NP cells, chondrocytes, and MSCs. This review aims to summarize the reporting on wnt3a/wnt5a mediated NP cell differentiation, and to elucidate the mechanisms involved in wnt3a and wnt5a mediated chondrogenesis for potential application as cell therapy supplements for IVD regeneration. Our review suggests that wnt3a, subsequently replaced with a chondrogenic stimulating growth factor, can enhance the chondrogenic potential of MSCs in vitro. Contrariwise, wnt5a is suggested to play a role in maintaining cell potency of differentiated NP or chondrogenic cells.

Accuracy of Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Placement after Single-Position versus Dual-Position Insertion for Lateral Interbody Fusion and Pedicle Screw Fixation Using Fluoroscopy

        Hiyama Akihiko,Katoh Hiroyuki,Sakai Daisuke,Sato Masato,Tanaka Masahiro,Watanabe Masahiko 대한척추외과학회 2022 Asian Spine Journal Vol.16 No.1

Study Design: Retrospective study.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of percutaneous pedicle screw (PPS) placement between prone and lateral decubitus positions during lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) and to evaluate the tendency of PPS positioning based on simple computed tomography measurements with patients in the lateral decubitus position.Overview of Literature: There is insufficient information in the literature regarding the accuracy of inserting a PPS using fluoroscopy in patients in the lateral decubitus position. Methods: We included 62 patients who underwent combined LLIF surgery and PPS fixation for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis with spinal canal stenosis. We compared the patient demographics and the accuracy of fluoroscopy-guided PPS placement between two groups: patients who remained in the lateral decubitus position for the pedicle screw fixation (single-position surgery [SPS] group) and those who were turned to the prone position (dual-position surgery [DPS] group). Results: There were 40 patients in the DPS group and 22 in the SPS group. Of the 292 PPSs, only 12 were misplaced. In other words, 280/292 screws (95.9%) were placed correctly in the pedicle’s cortical shell (grade 0). PPS insertion did not cause neurological, vascular, or visceral injuries in either group. The breach rates for the DPS and SPS groups were 4.1% (grade 1, 5 screws; grade 2, 3 screws; grade 3, 0 screw) and 4.1% (grade 1, 2 screws; grade 2, 2 screws; grade 3, 0 screw), respectively. Although there were no statistically significant differences, the downside PPS had more screw malpositioning than the upside PPS.Conclusions: We found that PPS insertion with the patient in the decubitus position under fluoroscopic guidance might be as safe and reliable a technique as PPS insertion in the prone position, with a misplacement rate similar to that previously published.
