Proteomic and Phenotypic Analyses of a Putative YggS Family Pyridoxal Phosphate-Dependent Enzyme in Acidovorax citrulli

        Lynn Heo(Lynn Heo),Yongmin Cho(Yongmin Cho),Junhyeok Choi(Junhyeok Choi),Jeongwook Lee(Jeongwook Lee),Yoobin Han(Yoobin Han),Sang-Wook Han(Sang-Wook Han) 한국식물병리학회 2023 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.39 No.3

Acidovorax citrulli (Ac) is a phytopathogenic bacterium that causes bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) in cucurbit crops, including watermelon. However, there are no effective methods to control this disease. YggS family pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme acts as a coen-zyme in all transamination reactions, but its function in Ac is poorly understood. Therefore, this study uses proteomic and phenotypic analyses to characterize the functions. The Ac strain lacking the YggS family pyri-doxal phosphate-dependent enzyme, AcΔyppAc(EV), virulence was wholly eradicated in geminated seed inoculation and leaf infiltration. AcΔyppAc(EV) propa-gation was inhibited when exposed to L-homoserine but not pyridoxine. Wild-type and mutant growth were comparable in the liquid media but not in the solid media in the minimal condition. The comparative proteomic analysis revealed that YppAc is primarily involved in cell motility and wall/membrane/envelop biogenesis. In addition, AcΔyppAc(EV) reduced biofilm formation and twitching halo production, indicating that YppAc is involved in various cellular mechanisms and possesses pleiotropic effects. Therefore, this identi-fied protein is a potential target for developing an effi-cient anti-virulence reagent to control BFB.

      • Study of A Rakhine Manuscript Deposited in the British Library

Zaw Lynn Aung 부산외국어대학교 동남아지역원 2013 Suvannabhumi Vol.5 No.2

Study of A Rakhine Manuscript Deposited in the British Library Zaw Lynn Aung Hinthada University, Myanmar This paper deals with the study of a manuscript on Rakhine history which is deposited today in Oriental and India Office Collection of the British Library as the accession number OR 3465 A. The External Criticism of this manuscript shows that it is a manuscript, which was commissioned Nga Mi to compile by Sir Arthur P. Phayre by making references of the existing Rakhine chronicles in the early colonial period, as Phayre wanted a historical account with an outline of the royal dynasties. The Internal Criticism reveals that the compiler Nga Mi did not invent the writing of his own but drawn the sources from various Rakhine chronicles in compiling his work. And Sir Arthur Phayre who used this Nga Mi Chronicle or OR 3465 A as the chief source in writing Rakhine history. He did not analyse the mythical, supernatural and improbable elements in Nga Mi Rakhine Razawin. Phayre did not problematicize any historical issue from Nga Mi Chronicle. One of the outstanding examples of the legend of King Min Saw Mon is discussed in this paper. As Arthur Phayre took this account from Nga Mi Chronicle and framed the story into a convincing narrative in his “History of Burma”, the scholars after Phayre have continued to present the legend as a historical fact.

Can education equality trickle-down to economic growth? The case of Korea

Lynn Ilon 서울대학교 교육연구소 2011 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.12 No.4

Education equality is generally neglected in the literature that investigates education's contribution to economic growth. This paper examines the case of Korea where economic growth, education equality (as measured by years of schooling), and educational quality have all been on the rise for many decades. Using time series data on schooling for adults of 25-85 years, a measure of education equality is calculated. Education equality is shown to be increasing through the years. A Cobb-Douglas production function for the economy was estimated using both "years of schooling" and "education equality" measures. When both measures are included, education equality is a strong predictor of economic growth.

      • [Invited Lecture Ⅳ] Improving Outcomes for All Vulnerable Families with Young Children

Lynn Kemp 한국간호과학회 2013 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2013 No.10

Children born to families experiencing disadvantage do not have the same opportunity for good health as those living in more advantaged circumstances. In Australia and internationally there is increased interest in developing interventions that will reduce health inequalities and recognition that early childhood sustained nurse home visiting interventions offer the greatest potential for long term change. In response many countries have invested in home visiting program for families with specific risk factors (such as being a first-time teenaged mother). This targeted investment, however, will not produce change in the levels of vulnerability in whole populations. Families are, or may become vulnerable for many reasons and at many times through their experience of parenting with up to 40 percent of families in the population requiring additional support either some or all of the time. It is now recognised that to make a difference to improve outcomes for whole communities and populations, children"s access to positive early experiences needs to be tackled along the whole social gradient, with services and support being proportionally targeted to the needs and capacities of all families. This paper will discuss the essential role that nurses working through universal health systems have in supporting families when they are experiencing vulnerabilities. The paper will focus on the Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting (MECSH) program of sustained nurse home visiting for vulnerable families at risk of poorer maternal and child health and development outcomes. MECSH draws together the best available evidence on the importance of the early years, children"s health and development, the types of support parents need, parent-infant interaction and holistic, ecological approaches to supporting families to establish the foundations of a positive life trajectory for their children. Targeting 20-25 percent of the population who need ongoing support, MECSH is delivered as part of an integrated approach to services for young children and their families. To encompass the range of needs encountered, it is broad based and multi-faceted, and also aims to exploit and integrate with resources available in the wider community. The program is delivered by public health nurses who are embedded within universal child and family health services, as part of a comprehensive program that includes group activities, and engagement with and referral to other services. MECSH is explicitly designed to support and develop child and family health nursing services to provide effective prevention and early intervention programs to achieve improved outcomes for all vulnerable families.

Effects of Azadirachtin and Neem-based Formulations for the Control of Sweetpotato Whitefly and Root-knot Nematode

Lynn, Ohn Mar,Song, Woo-Geun,Shim, Jae-Kyoung,Kim, Jang-Eok,Lee, Kyeong-Yeoll The Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistr 2010 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.53 No.5

Toxicity of the plant-derived natural pesticide azadirachtin and two types of commercial neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss)-based formulations, Neema (liquid type) and Neema-plus (pellet type), were evaluated based on the mortality rate and developmental inhibition of the sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). In a laboratory assay, when B. tabaci adults were fed leaves containing 5 or 10 ppm of azadirachtin solutions, the rates of female oviposition, subsequent egg hatch, and adult eclosion were significantly reduced to 23.1, 53.2, and 26.6% of the control, respectively. At a tomato greenhouse, the rates of adult colonization, oviposition and egg hatch were reduced to 78.2, 47.0, and 71.2% by Neema foliar spray and 31.3, 34.1, and 66.8% by soil treatment with Neema-plus relative to the control, respectively. When isolated soil nematodes were exposed to various concentrations of azadirachtin, Neema, and Neema-plus, the immobility of juvenile nematodes showed no change at 2 h after treatment, whereas a reduction of 36.3% was observed at day 1 with 10 ppm of azadirachtin. Nevertheless, the effects of neem formulations were faster and much higher than those of azadirachtin. At a cucumber greenhouse, soil treatments with neem formulations significantly reduced the numbers of soil nematodes and plant root-knots; the reduction with Neema was 12.1 and 9.0%, and with Neema-plus 26.4 and 24.6% of the control, respectively. Furthermore, soil treatment with Neemaplus greatly improved the growth of cucumber plants in nematode-infested pots. These results showed that azadirachtin and neem-based formulations were highly effective on the developmental inhibition of both whiteflies and root-knot nematodes. Thus, soil application of the neem-based formulations would be applicable for the control of both leaf-sucking and soil pests.
