This paper presents a multiscale modeling method for sheet molding compound (SMC) composites through a novel bundle packing reconstruction algorithm based on a micro-CT (Computed Tomography) image processing. Due to the complex flow pattern during the compression molding process, the SMC composites show a spatially varying orientation and overlapping of fiber bundles. Therefore, significant inhomogeneity and anisotropy are commonly observed and pose a tremendous challenge to predicting SMC composites' properties. For high-fidelity modeling of the SMC composites, the statistical distributions for the fiber orientation and local volume fraction are characterized from micro-CT images of real SMC composites. After that, a novel bundle packing reconstruction algorithm for a high-fidelity SMC model is proposed by considering the statistical distributions. A method for evaluating specimen level's strength and stiffness is also proposed from a set of high-fidelity SMC models. Finally, the proposed multiscale modeling methodology is experimentally validated through a tensile test.
차량/궤도 상호작용해석을 통한 고속철도 콘크리트궤도 레일의 피로수명 예측

철도노선에 콘크리트궤도가 본격적으로 적용되고, 승차감 향상 및 고속화와 궤도유지보수비용 저감을 위해 장대레일의 수요가 급증하고 있다. 그러나 국내의 콘크리트궤도 현장 적용년수가 길지 않아 실제 현장에서 반복적인 열차하중을 받아 장대레일이 파단된 사례가 현재까지 없기 때문에 실제 현장 데이터를 이용하여 장대레일의 수명을 예측하고 교체주기를 산정 하는 것은 어려움이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 차량/궤도 상호작용해석을 통해 레일에서 발생하는 응력을 검토하여 그 해석결과 값에 대해 중회귀분석을 수행하여 운행속도와 표면요철에 따른 레일 휨응력 예측식을 도출하였다. 최종적으로 산정된 예측식을 이용하여 콘크리트궤도 장대레일의 피로수명을 예측하였다. The demand of CWR is rapidly increasing because of the adaptation of concrete track, the need for rapid and comfortable ride, and the reduction of maintenance cost. Because of short applying period of the concrete track, there is not a case of CWR fracture in Korea caused by repeated load of the train, which makes it difficult to calculate replacement period of rail based on rail fatigue life using an actual field data. This study thus inspected the bending stress at rail bottom through analyzing the vehicle/track interaction, performed multiple regression analysis on the data, deducted the bending stress prediction equations by the speed and the surface irregularity. Finally, the fatigue life of CWR on the concrete track was predicted based on the prediction equations for bending stress at rail bottom.
SMC 복합재료 멀티스케일 모델링을 위한 RVE 재구성 알고리즘 개발

본 논문은 단섬유 칩으로 구성된 Sheet Molding Compound(SMC) 복합재료를 실험적으로 관찰된 특징들을 바탕으로 메소스케일(meso-scale) 대표체적요소(RVE: Representative Volume Element)를 재구성하는 새로운 알고리즘을 제시한다. 전산해석을 이용하여 SMC 복합재료의 비등방성 거동의 정확한 예측은 어려운 문제이다. 이를 극복하기 위해, SMC 복합재료를 위한 일련의 이미지 프로세싱 기술과 재구성 알고리즘 및 유한요소(FE: Finite Element) 생성기로 구성된 SMC RVE 모델을 개발하였다. 첫째, micro-CT 이미지 프로세싱은 SMC 물성에 직접적인 상관관계를 가지는 섬유칩의 배향 및 분산의 확률적 분포를 평가한다. 둘째, 해당 통계적 분포를 바탕으로 섬유칩 간의 겹침효과를 고려한 섬유칩 팩킹 재구성 알고리즘을 개발한다. 마지막으로, SMC 복합재료 멀티스케일 해석을 이용하여 매크로스케일(macro-scale)에서의 거동을 파악하고 실험데이터를 통해 검증을 수행한다. This paper presents a novel algorithm to reconstruct meso-scale representative volume elements (RVE), referring to experimentally observed features of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) composites. Predicting anisotropic mechanical properties of SMC composites is challenging in the multiscale virtual test using finite element (FE) models. To this end, an SMC RVE modeler consisting of a series of image processing techniques, the novel reconstruction algorithm, and a FE mesh generator for the SMC composites are developed. First, micro-CT image processing is conducted to estimate probabilistic distributions of two critical features, such as fiber chip orientation and distribution that are highly related to mechanical performance. Second, a reconstruction algorithm for 3D fiber chip packing is developed in consideration of the overlapping effect between fiber chips. Third, the macro-scale behavior of the SMC is predicted by the multiscale analysis.

It is estimated that the running of locally-developed next generation High Speed Trains with maximum speed of 400㎞/h will help to deteriorate track components. It was presented that the rail defect coding system in UIC 712R includes the definitions of damage types of rail, maintenance procedures, and etc to detect and maintain. It is necessary to make a track maintenance manual determining maintenance periods using the standardization of damage types of track components such as: sleeper, fastener, elastic pad. In this study, the damage types of high speed track components are investigated by referring domestic and foreign literatures. And then the damage types of rail given in UIC 712R is reclassified more particularly and classified damage types of track components using internal high speed railway. In conclusion, this study suggests that track maintenance will be efficiency through the standardization of the scientific detect and analysis technique according to the damage types of track components on internal high speed railway.
