Left ventricular (LV) thrombi may be caused by various conditions, particularly myocardial infarction. In most cases, LV thrombus occurs in patients with a significantly reduced ejection fraction. A LV thrombus is extremely rare in patients with normal LV function. We report a case of LV thrombus initially detected on transthoracic echocardiography and confirmed using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in a patient with normal LV wall motion. We highlight the rarity of this condition and the usefulness of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of LV thrombus.

Background: Phototrichogram analysis of normal scalp hair characteristics in Asian populations is not well characterized. Objectives: To investigate the normal hair characteristics of South Koreans using a phototrichogram. Methods: We enrolled 674 males and 683 females between the ages of 10 and 69. Hair density, thickness and the white hair percentage were measured via phototrichogram. Six scalp sites, including front, top, the peak between top and back, back, and the right and left sides were targeted. Results: The mean hair density, hair thickness, and the white hair percentage were not significantly different between genders at any scalp site. The mean hair density and thickness were significantly different according to scalp sites. Hair density declined with age, especially at the peak between top and back. Males and females showed different patterns of aging in hair density. Hair thickness changed little with age. But, mean hair thickness generally tended to increase until the 20s, reach a plateau between the 20s and 50s, and decrease after the 50s. The mean white hair percentages were 1.84 ± 4.24% in males and 1.66 ± 4.21% in females. The mean white hair percentages were significantly increased in subjects greater than 40 years of age. Conclusion: We described the normal characteristics and aging patterns of scalp hair in a Korean population.

In contrast to the translocation mechanisms determined in yeasts and mammalian cells, there is little information on the functions of plant peroxisomal proteins or their genomic structures. To understand the role that PEX14 plays in diverse plant peroxisomal functions and how peroxisomal translocation is mediated in plant cells, we cloned a 1827 bp cDNA encoding the peroxisomal membrane protein OsPex14p from a rice leaf cDNA library. The 54kDa OsPex14p, which has a theoretical pI value of 6.06, contains a highly conserved N-terminal domain and a short putative transmembrane domain. The OsPEX14 gene in the rice genome exists as a single-copy gene, consists of eleven exons interrupted by ten introns, and spans about 5kb of chromosome 5. The 5′-flanking region contains putative cis-acting light-responsive elements, and the transcription initiation site maps 114bp upstream of the translation start codon. OsPEX14 mRNA is highly expresssed in leaf tissues and is induced by exposure to several stresses. Heterologous expression of OsPex14p suppresses the defect in targeting of peroxisomal matrix proteins in a pex14 null mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Objectives: HIF-1β (ARNT) formed dimerization of HIF-1α, involved in various aspects of cancer biology, including proliferation and survival under hypoxic condition. This is an in vitro study that investigated the mechanism by which small interference HIF-1β (siHIF-1β) inhibits HIF-1α dimerization and thus it lead to suppress tumor cell growth. Method: Three HCC cell lines (HepG2, Huh 7 and Hep3B) were transfected with HIF-1β coding siRNA and cultured under hypoxic conditions (1% O2, 24 hours). Following transfection, the expression levels of HIF-1β , HIF-1α, and growth factors were examined through immuno-blotting. In addition, tumor growth was measured by MTT assay and tumor activity was measured by TUNEL, tumor invasion and migration assay. Results: The inhibition of HIF-1β by small interference RNA (siHIF-1β) led to suppression of tumor cell growth through inhibition of HIF dimerization under hypoxia condition. This effect was increased and maximized at 48 hrs after treatment of HIF-1β coding siRNA. Inhibition of HIF dimerization through treatment of siHIF-1β also regulated the expression of tumor growth related factors (VEGF, EGF and HGF). Inhibition of HIF- dimerization precluded tumor invasion and migration in variable HCC cell lines. Conclusions: Inhibition of HIF dimerization by siHIF-1β may lead to anti-tumor effects in a hypoxic condition of tumor environment.

함수 f의 리이만 적분은 그 함수에 의하여 정해지는 네트의 극한에 의하여 정의된다. 리이만 적분의 정의에서 네트의 정의역은 모든 tagged 분할 전체집합 P이다. P에는 P를 directed set로 만드는 두 개의 준순서가 있는데 하나는 세븐에의 한 순서이고 다른 하나는 분할의 노름에 의한 순서이다. 이 두 순서는 똑같은 함수 f에 대해서도 서로 다른 네트를 만들지만 극한은 같아서 모두 리만적분을 극한으로 갖는다. 이 논문에서는 또하나의 순서를 P에 주어서 제 3의 네트를 만들고 이 네트의 극한도 리이만 적분과 같다는 것을 증명하였다. Usually the Riemann integral of a function f is defined as a limit of a net determined by f. The domain P of the net is the set of all tagged partitions of a fixed interval. There are two partial orders on P that make P a directed set. One is the order by refinement of partitions and the other by norm of partitions. The two order produce the same Riemann integral of the function f. In this paper another order is defined on P that makes P a directed set and produces the Riemann integral.

<P>Three new megastigmane glucopyranosides, komaroveside A [(3<I>S</I>,4<I>R</I>,5<I>Z</I>,7<I>E</I>)-3,4-dihydroxy-5,7-megastigmadien-9-one-3-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranoside] (<B>1</B>), komaroveside B [(3<I>S</I>,4<I>S</I>,5<I>S</I>,6<I>R</I>,7<I>E</I>)-5,6-epoxy-3,4-dihydroxy-7-megastigmen-9-one-3-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranoside] (<B>2</B>) and komaroveside C [(3<I>S</I>,4<I>S</I>,5<I>S</I>,6<I>R</I>,7<I>E</I>,9<I>S</I>)-5,6-epoxy-3,4,9-trihydroxy-7-megastigmen-3-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranoside] (<B>3</B>) were isolated, together with eight known compounds, from <I>Cardamine komarovii</I>. The identification of these compounds and the elucidation of their structures were based on 1D- and 2D-NMR spectral data analysis. The isolated compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against four human tumor cell lines (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, HCT15) <I>in vitro</I> using the sulforhodamine B bioassay.</P>

The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) launched the official End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Patient Registry in 1985 and the Internet online registry program was opened in 2001. The ESRD Registry Committee of KSN has collected data on dialysis therapy in Korea through the online registry program in the KSN Internet website. The increasing number of elderly people and diabetic patients in Korea has resulted in a very rapid increase in the number of ESRD patients. The total number of ESRD patients was 58,860 (hemodialysis [HD], 39,509; peritoneal dialysis [PD], 7309; and functioning kidney transplant [KT], 1042). The prevalence of ESRD was 1144.4 patients per million population (PMP), and the proportion of renal replacement therapy was HD, 67.1%; PD, 12.4%; and KT, 20.5%. The number of new ESRD patients in 2010 was 9335 (HD, 7204; PD, 867; and KT, 1264; the incidence rate was 181.5 PMP). The primary causes of ESRD were diabetic nephropathy (45.2%), hypertensive nephrosclerosis (19.2%), and chronic glomerulonephritis (11.3%). The mean urea reduction ratio was 67.9% in male HD patients and 73.9% in female HD patients. The mean Kt/V was 1.394 in male patients and 1.659 in female patients. Five-year survival rates of male and female dialysis patients were 64.9% and 67.3%, respectively.

Background: Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) continues to be the popular treatment for meniscal tears, but recent randomized controlled trials have questioned its efficacy. To provide more evidence-based criteria for patient selection, we undertook this study to identify prognostic factors associated with clinical failure after APM for medial meniscus tears. Methods: Medical records of 160 patients followed up for at least 5 years after APM for medial meniscal tears were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data (age, sex, and body mass index), radiographic variables (Kellgren-Lawrence [K-L] grade and hip-knee-ankle [HKA] angle), and clinical scores (International Knee Documentation Committee score, Tegner activity scale score, Lysholm score, and Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) were recorded. Clinical failure was defined as the need for an additional surgical procedure (arthroscopy, osteotomy, or arthroplasty) or the presence of intolerable pain. Survivorship analysis with clinical failure as an end point was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Factors related to clinical failure were analyzed using a Cox proportional hazard model. Cutoff values were determined using areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Radiographic progression of osteoarthritis was analyzed using the chi-square test, and serial changes of clinical scores were analyzed using a linear mixed model. Results: Clinical success rates were 95.7% at 5 years, 75.6% at 10 years, and 46.3% at 15 years. Age, HKA angle, and K-L grade (p = 0.01, p = 0.02, and p = 0.04, respectively) were found to be significant risk factors of clinical failure. Cutoff values at 10 years postoperatively as determined by ROC analysis were 50 years for age (sensitivity = 0.778, 1-specificity = 0.589), grade 2 for K-L grade (sensitivity = 0.778, 1-specificity = 0.109), and 5.5° for HKA angle (sensitivity = 0.667, 1-specificity = 0.258). In patients who had clinical success until 10 years after APM, radiological osteoarthritis progressed gradually. However, the clinical scores of patients who achieved clinical success did not decrease significantly over the 10-year follow-up. Conclusions: The poor prognostic factors found to be related to clinical failure after APM for a medial meniscal tear were patient age (≥ 50 years), preoperative K-L grade (≥ grade 2), and preoperative HKA angle (≥ varus 5.5°).
