In this study, we report the first clinically identified case of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in a 73-year old man from Jeju Island, South Korea. Although his initial manifestation suggested tsutsugamushi disease with cutaneous lesion, later the patient presented with symptoms characteristic of SFTS. Despite intensive medical therapies upon the clinical diagnosis of SFTS, patients condition rapidly deteriorated. SFTS is a fatal disease that requires early diagnosis and appropriate supportive treatment.

( Sung Hyen Kim ),( Jeong Hwa Seo ),( Young Gyu Ko ),( Young Duk Huh ),( Heon Yong Park ) 생화학분자생물학회 (구 한국생화학분자생물학회) 2012 BMB Reports Vol.45 No.1
TRIM72 is known to play a critical role in skeletal muscle membrane repair. To better understand the molecular mechanisms of this protein, we carried out an in vitro binding study with TRIM72. Our study proved that TRIM72 binds various lipids with dissociation constants (Kd) ranging from 88.2 ± 9.9 nM to 550.5 ± 134.5 nM. In addition, the intrinsic fluorescence of TRIM72 exponentially decreased when the protein was diluted with stirring. The time-resolved fluorescence decay occurred in a concentration- independent manner. The fluorescence-decayed TRIM72 remained in its secondary structure, but its binding properties were significantly reduced. The dissociation constants (Kd) of fluorescence-decayed TRIM72 for palmitate and stearate were 159.1 ± 39.9 nM and 355.4 ± 106.0 nM, respectively. This study suggests that TRIM72 can be dynamically converted by various stimuli. The results of this study also provide insight into the role of TRIM72 in the repair of sarcolemma damage. Background: To characterize the recently issued femur shaft insufficiency fracture in terms of a patient’s own epidemiological status. Methods: Fourteen patients were treated for insufficiency fracture from July 2002 to June 2008, excluding cases including the risk factors of insufficiency fracture. All patients were female, and their mean age was 75.6 years (range, 65 to 89 years). The mean follow-up period was 50.6 months (range, 14 to 86 months). Results: The mean body weight of the Koreans in the same age group was 58.1 ± 9.7 kg, and the mean height was 155.5 ± 8.8 cm. The mean body weight of our insufficiency fracture patients was 45.7 kg and it was statistically significantly lower than that of the Koreans in the same age group (p < 0.001). The mean height was 147.3 cm and it was significantly shorter than the mean height of the Koreans in the same age group (p = 0.002). In regard to menopausal time, the mean menopausal time of the Koreans was 48.0 ± 4.2 years, it was 44 years in our study, as menopause occurred statistically significantly earlier (p = 0.017). The patients with insufficiency fracture showed statistically lower weight, shorter stature and an earlier menopausal period than that of the general population. Conclusions: In early menopausal, underweight, and short patients prescribed osteoporosis medication for an extended period of time, if predromal symptom is present, it is necessary to suspect insufficiency fracture of the femur.
A Novel MPPT Control of photovoltaic system using FLC algorithm
Sung-Jun Kang,Jae-Sub Ko,Jung-Sik Choi,Mi-Geum Jang,Ju-Hui Mun,Jin-Gook Lee,Dong-Hwa Chung 제어로봇시스템학회 2011 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2011 No.10
This paper proposes a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) using a fuzzy logic control (FLC) algorithm for robust in environment changing. The power available at the output of photovoltaic (PV) cell keeps changing with radiation and temperature because solar cell exhibits a nonlinear current-voltage characteristic. So its maximum power point (MPP) of PV cells varies with radiation and temperature. MPPT methods are used in PV systems to make full utilization of PV array output power which depends on radiation and temperature. Conventional MPPT controller such as constant voltage (CV), perturbation and observation (PO) and incremental conductance (IC) are researched. But these controllers have the problem that is failure to MPP with environment changing. The proposed FLC controller is based the fuzzy control algorithm and able to robust control with environment changing. Also the PV systems applied FLC controller is modeled by PSIM and the response characteristics of FLC method according to the environment variation is analyzed through comparison with performance of conventional methods. The validity of this controller is proved through response results.
Early Rupture after Coiling of Unruptured Aneurysm
Ko, Jun-Kyeung,Lee, Sang-Weon,Lee, Tae-Hong,Choi, Chang-Hwa The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2007 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.42 No.3
We describe a case of an unruptured basilar top aneurysm that was associated with early rupture after incomplete coiling. A 62-year-old woman with a history of several small infarctions has undergone coiling of unruptured basilar top aneurysm. Two weeks after initial coiling the patient presented with Hunt and Hess grade IV subarachnoid hemorrhage consistent with a ruptured basilar top aneurysm. Repeat angiography revealed a rupture of recanalized basilar top aneurysm. Second embolization with additional coils resulted in complete occlusion. However, her neurological status was not improved afterward and she was transferred to department of rehabilitation one month after hemorrhage with comatous state. To our knowledge, this is the first case of fatal early rupture after coiling of unruptured aneurysm. It has been speculated that coiling could cause injury to aneurysmal wall and facilitate rupture.

A two-step heating process, long low temperature-short high temperature cooking cycle, is used to maximize fat reduction in roast beef. First, the beef was cooked at a low temperature for a long time; then, it was cooked at a higher temperature for a short time. The study examines cooking loss, fat content, texture, and inosine 5’-monophosphate (IMP) production of cooked meat under different heating conditions. In an oven, the internal temperature of the meat increased to a transition point of 48 or 54°C at oven temperatures of 80 or 100°C and reached 60°C at 220°C. The fat was reduced by up to 44.2% compared to 27.8% under conventional roasting conditions. In addition, the two-step heating process kept the meat tender and juicy but improved IMP content.

Background: Nucleoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal surgery using a Coblation(R) technique that creates small voids within the disc. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of cervical nucleoplasty in patients with cervical disc disorder. Methods: Between March 2008 and December 2009, 22 patients with cervical disc disorders were treated with cervical nucleoplasty after failed conservative treatment. All procedures were performed under local anesthesia, and fluoroscopic guidance and voids were created in the disc with the Perc(TM) DC Spine Wand(TM). Clinical outcomes were evaluated by the Modified Macnab criteria and VAS score at preprocedure, postprocedure 1 month, and 6 months. Results: Six patients had one, eight patients had two and eight patients had three discs treated; a total of 46 procedures was performed. Mean VAS reduced from 9.3 at preprocedure to 3.7 at postprocedure 1 month and to 3.4 at postprocedure 6 months. There was no significant complication related to the procedure within the first month. Outcomes were good or excellent in 17/22 (77.3%) cases. Postprocedure magnetic resonance imaging was acquired in two patients after two months showing morphologic evidence of volume reduction of protruded disc material in one patient but not in the other. Conclusions: Percutaneous decompression with a nucleoplasty using a Coblation(R) technique in the treatment of cervical disc disorder is a safe, minimally-invasive and less uncomfortable procedure, with an excellent short-term clinical outcome.
