Background: Chronic kidney disease is considered a risk factor for thyroid nodules as well as thyroid dys-function such as hypothyroidism. Among patients on hemodialysis, we assessed the size of thyroid nodule and goiter at baseline and 1 year later with ultrasonography. Methods: We prospectively selected 47 patients with hemodialysis at January 2012 and reviewed their medical records. We checked goiter and thyroid nodules at January 2012 and December 2012. Results: In the hemodialysis patients (n=47), 24 patients (51.1%) had thyroid nodules and 33 patients (70.2%) had goiter at baseline. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) was higher in patients with thyroid nodules (204.4±102.9 vs. 129.9±93.6 pg/mL, p=0.01). Thyroid ultrasonography was conducted in 29 patients after 1 year. The thick-ness of the thyroid isthmus increased (2.8±1.6 vs. 3.2±1.9 mm, p=0.003), but the number of nodules did not change (1.2±1.9 vs. 1.4±2.0, p=0.109). PTH was associated with the enlargement of thyroid nodules signi-ficantly through logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: Thyroid goiter and nodules in hemodialysis patients were more prevalent than in the general population. PTH influenced the production of thyroid nodules in hemodialysis patients. Regular examination with thyroid ultrasonography and thyroid function test should be considered in hemodialysis patients.

Efforts to reduce the vehicle weight and improve the crash performance have led to the increased application of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) into the automotive architecture. Although resistance spot welding and laser welding are mainly used for joining thin sheets in the car body. these joining methods poses a problem of reachability in chassis part. To overcome this issue, arc plug welds are invented as a novel method for joining steel sheets in chassis part. These shift in joining procedure to arc plug welds, consequently propelled the need for the understanding of the plug weldability of various steel sheets. In this study, to investigate the plug weldability, a comparative evaluation of six steel sheets ranging from 440MPa to 1500MPa with similar thickness of 1.0 mm has been done by using ER110S wire in 8:2 Ar-CO2 atmosphere with a circular hole of 6.0 mm diameter. The static tensile shear strength and microstructure of these arc plug welds with similar effective interfacial weld diameter of 6.0 mm are detailed. It was found that the AHSS consistently achieved high tensile shear strength compared to the conventional steel grades. The differences in failure mode are attributed due to the HAZ softening and weld metal hardness.

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate the degrees of emotional labor and the effects of Type A personality, emotional expressiveness, job stress, and social support on the emotional labor among clinical nurses. Methods: The subjects of this study were the clinical nurses working at the general hospital in Seoul. The subjects were selected by quota sampling in consideration of the length of employment and the working units. The self-reported questionnaires were administered to 286 clinical nurses and the data were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 software Results: The level of emotional labor of the subjects was revealed moderate to high. Significant explanatory variables of the degrees of emotional labor included psychological job load, the lack of job autonomy, and role conflicts. These three variables demonstrated the explanatory power of 11.4% of the emotional labor. Conclusion: The findings suggested that the intervention program intervening emotional labor should be developed in order to improve psychological job load, the job autonomy, and role conflicts among clinical nurses.
