During recent screening to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in South Korea, a total of 31 bacterial strains assigned to the class Gammaproteobacteria were isolated from a variety of environmental samples including soil, tidal flat, freshwater, seawater, and plant roots. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.7%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to each independent and predefined bacterial species. There is no official report that these 31 species have been described in South Korea; therefore 5 species of 3 genera in the order Alteromonadales, 11 species of 3 genera in the order Pseudomonadales, 8 species of 6 genera in the order Enterobacteriales, 2 species of 1 genera in the order Vibrionales, 1 species of 1 genera in the order Oceanospirillales, 3 species of 3 genera in the order Xanthomonadales, and 1 species in the order Spongiibacter_o within the Gammaproteobacteia are reported for proteobacterial species found in South Korea. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs are also described in the species description section.

최근 인터넷을 이용한 침해사고가 급격하게 증가하고 있으며, 그 피해의 파급효과가 매우 커지고 있다. 침해사고로부터 네트워크와 시스템 등의 자산을 보호하는 것이 더욱 중요해지는 실정이다. 크래커들은 대상 네트워크와 시스템에 존재하는 취약점을 찾아내고, 그 취약점을 이용하여 대상 네트워크 및 시스템에 침투하여 악의적인 행동을 하게 된다. 인트라넷에 대한 취약점 분석 평가는 네트워크 및 시스템에 존재하는 취약점을 분석하고, 각각의 취약점을 이용한 침투의 가능여부와 피해 파급효과에 대한 평가를 수행한다. 취약점 분석 평가를 수행함으로써 대상 기관에 적합한 보호대책을 수립하여 침해사고를 사전에 예방하고, 사고 발생시 적절히 대응할 수 있도록 한다. 본 논문에서는 인트라넷 취약점 분석 평가 방법론을 제시하고자 한다.

During a comprehensive investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, a total of 46 bacterial strains assigned to the classes Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, and Epsilonproteobacteria were isolated from a diversity of habitats including freshwater, seawater, brackish water, ginseng soil, plant roots, natural caves, and tidal flats. Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and formation of strongly-supported phylogenetic clades with the closest type species, each strain was assigned to an independent, predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding the isolation of these 46 species in Korea, here we report them as new species to Korea: 34 species in 14 families in the five orders of Alphaproteobacteria, 10 species in five families in the three orders of Betaproteobacteria, one species of Deltaproteobacteria and one species of Epsilonproteobacteria. <P>Dexmedetomidine, an <I>α</I>2-adrenoceptor agonist, is widely used as a sedative and analgesic agent in a number of clinical applications. However, little is known about the mechanism by which it exerts its analgesic effects on the trigeminal system. Two types of voltage-gated sodium channels, Na<SUB>v</SUB>1.7 and Na<SUB>v</SUB>1.8, as well as <I>α</I>2-adrenoceptors are expressed in primary sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglion (TG). Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, we investigated the effects of dexmedetomidine on voltage-gated sodium channel currents (<I>I</I><SUB>Na</SUB>) via <I>α</I>2-adrenoceptors in dissociated, small-sized TG neurons. Dexmedetomidine caused a concentration-dependent inhibition of <I>I</I><SUB>Na</SUB> in small-sized TG neurons. <I>I</I><SUB>Na</SUB> inhibition by dexmedetomidine was blocked by yohimbine, a competitive <I>α</I>2-adrenoceptor antagonist. Dexmedetomidine-induced inhibition of <I>I</I><SUB>Na</SUB> was mediated by G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) as this effect was blocked by intracellular perfusion with the G protein inhibitor GDP<I>β</I>-S. Our results suggest that the <I>I</I><SUB>Na</SUB> inhibition in small-sized TG neurons, mediated by the activation of Gi/o protein-coupled <I>α</I>2-adrenoceptors, might contribute to the analgesic effects of dexmedetomidine in the trigeminal system. Therefore, these new findings highlight a potential novel target for analgesic drugs in the orofacial region.</P>

PURPOSE:: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical 8-oxo-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) on experimental ocular chemical injury models. METHODS:: We created ocular chemical injury models with 8-week-old BALB/c mice (n = 70) by applying 100% ethanol; the mice were then treated with 8-oxo-dG eye drops 10 and 5 mg/mL and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) twice daily. After 7 days, clinical findings such as corneal integrity, clarity, and neovascularization were assessed. Histology, immunohistochemistry findings, and inflammatory cytokine levels using real-time polymerase chain reactions in the corneas of the mice were also analyzed. RESULTS:: Topical application of 8-oxo-dG eye drops resulted in a significant improvement of epithelial defects and clarity, dose dependently (each P < 0.001). Inflammatory cell infiltration and corneal stromal edema were also decreased in the 8-oxo-dG-treated mice compared with PBS-treated controls, based on hematoxylin and eosin staining. The expressions of F4/80 and neutrophil elastase–positive inflammatory cells and IL-1 and TNF-α cytokine levels were significantly reduced in the 8-oxo-dG group compared with the PBS group (each P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS:: Topical 8-oxo-dG application showed an excellent therapeutic effect in ocular chemical injury models by suppressing inflammation.

Small bowel tumors comprise less than 5% of gastrointestinal neoplasm. Because of their rarity, a correct diagnosis is very difficult and often delayed. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GIST) are spindle cell tumors occuring mainly in adults with 5-year survivals of 50-56% and 10-year survivals of 35-43%. It is difficult that we concluded clinical manifestation of GIST. At the time of diagnosis, we already consider metastatic lesions as malignancy, which is suggested poor prognosis. Patients frequently complain vague intermittent abdominal pain. Occasionally they experience severe colicky pain because of tumor-induced partial intestinal obstruction. Factors playing a prominent role in predicting their biological behavior are tumor site, size, and degree of mitotic activity. Recently, we experienced one case of duodenal benign GIST in a 23-year-old woman who had epigastric pain and intermittent melena, so we report it with a review of the literature.

<P>Biotransformation of ginsenosides was examined using lactic acid bacteria isolated from several kinds of kimchi. A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, and rod-shaped lactic acid bacterial strain, designated EMML 3041(T), was determined to have ginsenoside-converting activity and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain EMML 3041(T) displayed β-glucosidase activity that was responsible for its ability to transform ginsenoside Rb1 (one of the dominant active components of ginseng) to F2 via gypenoside XVII, ginsenoside Rb2 to compound Y via compound O, ginsenoside Rc to compound Mc via compound Mc1, and ginsenoside Rd to ginsenoside F2. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain EMML 3041(T) was shown to belong to the genus Lactobacillus and is closely related to Lactobacillus versmoldensis KU-3(T) (98.3 % sequence similarity). Polyphasic taxonomy study confirmed that the strain EMML 3041(T) represents a novel species, for which the name Lactobacillus ginsenosidimutans sp. nov. is proposed, with EMML 3041(T) (=KACC 14527(T) = JCM 16719(T)) as the type strain.</P>
