Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and rapidly progressive disease involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and deep soft tissue. Although NF can occur any part of the body, the breast is an uncommon primary site for NF, and its occurrence in the breast during pregnancy has never previously been reported. Here, we report the case of a healthy 31-yearold pregnant woman who presented with NF of the left breast that was successfully treated with breast-conserving debridement and secondary wound closure using negative-pressure wound therapy.

<P>A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic, endospore forming and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain L10(T), was isolated from marine sediment collected from the South Korean coast. The organism grew optimally under conditions of 30 C, 1?% (w/v) NaCl and pH 6.0. It was oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain L10(T) was associated with the genus Paenibacillus and most closely related to Paenibacillus barcinonensis BP-23(T) (98.2?% similarity). The major fatty acids of strain L10(T) were iso-C(14?:?0), anteiso-C(15?:?0) and iso-C(16?:?0). The cell-wall peptidoglycan was the A1γ type, and the predominant isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone-7. Strain L10(T) contained two unidentified lipids, an unidentified amino-phospholipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and diphosphatidylglycerol. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 44 mol% and the DNA-DNA hybridization values with closely related strains were below 142?%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain L10(T) should be classified as a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus. The name Paenibacillus oceanisediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L10(T) (?=?KACC 16203(T)?=?JCM 17814(T)).</P>

<P>Black soldier fly (<I>Hermetia illucens</I>) larvae (BSFL) are rich in protein and have the potential to be used in animal feed. The aim of the present study was to determine the immunoprophylactic effect of BSFL against <I>Salmonella</I> Gallinarum in broiler chicks as an alternative feed additive. Results showed that BSFL improved body weight gain and increased frequency of CD4+ T lymphocyte, serum lysozyme activity, and spleen lymphocyte proliferation. Moreover, BSFL reinforced bacterial clearance and increased survivability of broiler chicks against <I>S.</I> Gallinarum. These data suggested that BSFL has prophylactic properties with stimulating non-specific immune responses, as well as reduced bacterial burden against <I>S</I>. Gallinarum.</P>

Purpose: Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) can be used to diagnose thyroid cancer and other tumors. Although FNAB without negative pressure (FNAB-P) reduces the risk of blood contamination, FNAB with negative pressure (FNAB+P) increases the sensitivity of the biopsy results. Therefore, we performed a randomized study of FNAB with or without negative pressure to identify the better diagnostic method. Methods: Between March 2016 and February 2017, 172 consecutive patients were enrolled to investigate >0.5 cm nodules with indeterminate or suspicious malignant features. Patients were randomly assigned to the FNAB+P group (a 50 mL syringe was used to provide negative pressure) or to the FNAB-P group (passive collection of blood in the needle’s hub). The 2 methods’ diagnostic adequacy and quality were evaluated using an objective scoring system. The study’s protocol was registered with the World Health Organization Clinical Research Information Service (http://cris.nih.go.kr/cris, KCT0001857). Results: The patients were randomly assigned to the FNAB+P group (n = 86) or the FNAB-P group (n = 86). There were no significant intergroup differences in nodule position, size, age, consistency, calcification, BRAF mutation, or pathology. Evaluation of diagnostic adequacy parameters revealed no significant differences in background blood/clot (P = 0.728), amount of cellular material (P = 0.052), degree of cellular degeneration (P = 0.622), degree of cellular trauma (P = 0.979), or retention of appropriate architecture (P = 0.487). Furthermore, there was no significant intergroup difference in the diagnostic quality (P = 0.634). Conclusion: This prospective randomized study failed to detect significant differences in the diagnostic adequacy and quality of FNAB with or without negative pressure. Therefore, the examiner may select whichever FNAB method they prefer

Background: There are limited data on the clinical characteristics and the vertical transmission rate of pregnant women with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and their neonates in Korea. Materials and Methods: Pregnant women who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection were retrospectively reviewed in Asan Medical Center from September 1, 2020, to April 26, 2022. All neonates and infected women underwent a polymerase chain reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 within 24 hours of birth and at 48-hour interval if they stayed in the hospital. Results: A total of 60 pregnant women gave birth by cesarean section (n = 40, 66.7%) or vaginal delivery (n = 20, 33.3%). Among them, 3 women gave birth to twins. Delivery occurred, on average, at 38+2 weeks (± 2+0) of gestational age, and 9 patients (15.0%) had underlying diseases. Of these 60 patients, 9 (15.0%) received coronavirus disease 2019 vaccinations. Pneumonia was confirmed by a chest radiograph in 7 patients (11.7%), and 2 patients (3.3%) required supplemental oxygen therapy, both of whom eventually recovered. The mean birthweight of the neonates was 3,137 g (± 557.6). Further, 8 neonates (12.7%) were of low-birth weight (< 2,500 g), and 11 neonates (17.5%) were preterm (<37 weeks of gestation). Apgar score was median 8 (8 - 9) at 1 minute and 9 (9 – 9.5) at 5 minutes. Four neonates (6.3%) required invasive mechanical ventilation. All neonates had negative SARS-CoV-2 test results. Therefore, there was no vertical transmission in 63 of the neonates (0%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0 - 6) Conclusion: Pregnant Korean women with SARS-CoV-2-infection had favorable obstetric outcomes, and the risk of vertical transmission to their neonates was low. Managing the infection risks of pregnant women and their neonates during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic are required.

<P>A slightly halophilic, Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile rod, designated TW15T, was isolated from an ark clam in South Korea. Growth occurred at 10-37 °C, with 1-5 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7.0-10.0. Optimal growth occurred at 25-30 °C, with 2 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 8.0. Strain TW15T exhibited both oxidase and catalase activities. The major fatty acids of strain TW15T were summed feature 8 (consisting of C18 : 1ω7<I>c</I> and/or C18 : 1ω6<I>c</I>) and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7<I>c</I>. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10 (Q-10). The polar lipids of strain TW15T comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified lipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TW15T was most closely related to <I>Ruegeria lacuscaerulensis</I> DSM 11314T (98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). DNA-DNA relatedness with closely related strains was <52±3 %. The DNA G+C content was 55.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain TW15T represents a novel species of the genus <I>Ruegeria</I>, for which the name <I>Ruegeria conchae</I> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TW15T ( = KACC 15115T = JCM 17315T).</P>
