Background: Ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) is an important medicinal herbs in Asia. However, ginsengvarieties are less developed. Method: To developed ginseng varieties, a pure line selection method was applied in this study. Results: Gumpoong was testing of 4-yr-old specimens in 2002, the proportions of the below-groundroots that were rusty colored for Gumpoong was 1.29 in Daejeon and 1.45 in Eumseong, whereas theproportions for its yellow berry variant were 2.60 and 2.45 in the two regions, respectively. Thus theGumpoong was resistant to root rust. Sunpoong has a high yielding property. Its average root weight is70.6 g for 6-yr-old roots. Its yield is 2.9 kg/1.62m2 and the rate of heaven- and earth-grade product is20.9%, which is very high compared to 9.4% for Yunpoong. Sunone is resistance to root rot and thesurvival rate of 4-yr-old roots was 44.4% in 1997, whereas that of the violet-stem variant landrace was21.7%. Sunhyang has content of arginyl-fructosyl-glucose (AFG), which produces the unique scent of redginseng, is 95.1 mmol/g and greater than the 30.8 mmol/g of Chunpoong in 6-yr-old plants. Sunun andCheongsun are being nurtured to protect genetic resources. Conclusion: Developed ginsneg varieties will be used as the basis for the protection of genetic resourcesand breeding. Jang-Ho Lee

In this study, we proceed on the assumption that where the rule of law prevails, parliament becomes the key institution of democratic governance. To transform delegative or limited democracy into a truly representative democracy, it is necessary to ensure not only vertical but also horizontal accountability. This study considers the horizontal dimensions of accountability in order to provide a fuller picture of the part that the Korean legislature has played during the course of democratic regime change. It examines the current process of economic policymaking under democratic rule, using evaluative data from the lawmakers who serve on the National Assembly Committee on Finance and Economy. The authoritarian “sunflower” model presented an extreme version of technocracy, featuring efficient decision - making mostly by technocrats with little or no consultation with other governmental and nongovernmental institutions, including the National Assembly. The current model has, on the other hand, moderated technocratic control such that technocrats formulate policies in consultation with other, more diverse interests. Obviously, this model falls far short of manifesting a fully democratic model of economic policymaking in which the president and elected lawmakers formulate policy jointly in the context of extensive consultation with civic groups and all other relevant governmental and non-governmental organizations and interests.

This study shows systematic and empirical findings of the determinants of foreign direct investment in case of Korea, which has experienced various political, social, and economic phenomena. This study especially investigates the determinants of U.S. foreign direct investment flows in Korea before the country was democratized. Six variables of political instability: They inclide riots (protest demonstration); labor strikes; external threat; data from domestic violence; assassination; and coup d’etat. They are categorized with regard to the data from the the Far Eastern Economic Review weekly magazine(1977 to 1991). This study finds that there is no significant relationship between political instability and FDI flows in Korea, unless the political instability is severe enough to affect the FDI policy and economic conditions, which was the case of 1980. Although investors normally say that political instability is important to their investment decisions, their actions do not confirm this. In making their decision, we found economic conditions and economic policy matters more in the case of Korea.
Induced pluripotent stem cells for modeling of pediatric neurological disorders.
Jang, Jiho,Quan, Zhejiu,Yum, Yunjin J,Song, Hyo Sook,Paek, Seonyeol,Kang, Hoon-Chul Wiley 2014 BIOTECHNOLOGY JOURNAL Vol.9 No.7

The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying childhood neurological disorders have remained obscure due to a lack of suitable disease models reflecting human pathogenesis. Using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology, various neurological disorders can now be extensively modeled. Specifically, iPSC technology has aided the study and treatment of early-onset pediatric neurodegenerative diseases such as Rett syndrome, Down syndrome, Angelman syndrome. Prader-Willi syndrome, Friedreich's ataxia, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), fragile X syndrome, X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), and SCN1A gene-related epilepsies. In this paper, we provide an overview of various gene delivery systems for generating iPSCs, the current state of modeling early-onset neurological disorders and the ultimate application of these in vitro models in cell therapy through the correction of disease-specific mutations.

India has emerged as the Asia's new economic power. Many studies have applauded its significant economic development. Recently, however, Indian economy has also experienced sluggish growth and has faced pessimistic prediction. This paper will explore the reasons behind these divergent views by investigating India's industrial strategies and the structural characteristics of economic governance through an examination of the relationship between Indian government and businesses by firm type and industrial sector.
