Primary intraosseous meningioma of skull is rare, and often confused with a primary bone tumor. We report a case of a 71 years old female patient with an intraosseous calvarial meningioma of frontal bone presenting as a solitary osteolytic skull lesion. Plain skull radiograph, CT and MR images show sharply marginated expansile bony lesion in frontal skull vault, and a small well enhanced soft tissue mass within bone. The mass is extracranially protruded to scalp, and is partially attached to the underlying dura. Outer and inner table of skull vault is slightly bulged out, suggesting intradiploic origin of the tumor. The tumor was treated with surgical excision and cranioplasty. Histological examination revealed fibrous meningioma.

We report seizure induced brain swelling in three patients. MRI revealed a cortical, subcortical(3/3), and basal ganglia(2/3) high signal intensity on T2- weighted and FLAIR images. The lesion shows low signal on T1-weighted image, and enhanced after contrast administration. Follow up study after 27 days in one case revealed complete resolution of the lesion. The reversible MRI findings may be the results of a local brain swelling, breakdown of blood-brain permeability, and a defect of cerebral autoregulation during seizure activity. The transient nature of such findings have to be considered in the differential diagnosis such as reversible ischemia, migraine, inflammation and infection.

A persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common thoracic venous anomaly. It is a persistent remnant of a vessel that is present as a counterpart of normal right-sided superior vena cava(SVC) in early embryological development but normally disappears later. Its diagnosis can be confirmed by many noninvasive and invasive tests, or it is incidentally diagnosed at insertion into the left subclavian or jugular vein or thoracic surgery. If it is not associated with other congenital cardiac anomalies, it is usually asymptomatic and hemodynamically insignificant. We describe the chest radiograph and CT findings of bilateral SVC with drainage to left superior intercostal vein, hemiazygos, azygos vein and right SVC, and no connection of coronary sinus.

Diffuse idiopathic hyperostosis skeletal hyperostosis(DISH) and ankylosing spondylitis(AS) usually involve spines and sacroiliac joints but show different radiologic characteristics of each other. We report a case of a 31 year old man with radiologic findings of DISH and AS. Radiographs of thoracic and lumbar spine revealed changes of DISH and AS at the same time and CT scans of sacroiliac joints showed features of AS.

Vertebral epithelioid haemangioendothelioma is a rare bone tumour originating from vascular tissue. We report a case of epithelioid haemangioendothelioma occurring in the lumbar spine of a 60-year-old man. Radiographs revealed an osteolytic lesion in the lumbar spine with marginal sclerosis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion with low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images and inhomogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. Excisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of epithelioid haemangioendothelioma.

Objective

We prospectively compared whole-body multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and 3.0T magnetic resonance (MR) images with autopsy findings.

Materials and Methods

Five cadavers were subjected to whole-body, 16-channel MDCT and 3.0T MR imaging within two hours before an autopsy. A radiologist classified the MDCT and 3.0T MRI findings into major and minor findings, which were compared with autopsy findings.

Results

Most of the imaging findings, pertaining to head and neck, heart and vascular, chest, abdomen, spine, and musculoskeletal lesions, corresponded to autopsy findings. The causes of death that were determined on the bases of MDCT and 3.0T MRI findings were consistent with the autopsy findings in four of five cases. CT was useful in diagnosing fatal hemorrhage and pneumothorax, as well as determining the shapes and characteristics of the fractures and the direction of external force. MRI was effective in evaluating and tracing the route of a metallic object, soft tissue lesions, chronicity of hemorrhage, and bone bruises.

Conclusion

A postmortem MDCT combined with MRI is a potentially powerful tool, providing noninvasive and objective measurements for forensic investigations.

We describe an intra-articular schwannoma involving the knee, an extremely unusual location for this lesion. This case shares the typical magnetic resonance (MR) findings of neural tumors, but also involves atypical features not previously highlighted, related to its solitary involvement and relatively larger size. Schwannoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of intra-articular masses in the knee joint.

In this study, we examined about effectives of the drug release by used glutaraldehyde amount and molecular weight varieties of chitosan in DDS. The release experiments of chitosan microcapsules containing norfloxacin were operated in the phosphate buffer solutions of pH 7.4 and 37 ℃, and its results were as follows. In the linearly release time of drug, chitosan microcapsules (Mw 350,000) of used glutaraldehyde 1 mL and 2 mL were 6.0 and 8.1 days, and chitosan microcapsules (Mw 190,000) of used glutaraldehyde 1 mL and 2 mL were 4.5 and 6.4 days relatively. These results showed more effective drug releases in the increments of molecular weight and glutaraldehyde. In short, the formulation allows chitosan microcapsules to suppress the burst effect of the drug release mechanism, which led to the controlled release pattern and microcapsules.

Abstract

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively investigated owing to their unique properties attributing to their high surface/bulk ratio and finite number of atoms. However, the thermodynamic instability of NPs, which originates from their finite size, limits their practical applications. Hence, carbon-supported Pt NPs are synthesized onto carbon-containing liquid substrates via direct one-step sputtering. In order to successfully produce uniform Pt NPs via sputtering using various ionic liquids as non-volatile liquid substrates, special conditions are required, and the relationship between ionic liquids and particle surfaces should be investigated. It has been reported that anions and carbon supports of ionic liquids significantly affect the dispersion and synthesis of Pt NPs. In this study, we proposed a mechanism underlying the chemical bonding between anions and carbon supports and verified it using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy.

Highlights

Carbon supported Pt nanoparticles were prepared by sputtering method.

Uniform Pt nanoparticles were synthesized onto an ionic liquid.

A new chemical bonding mechanism between anions and carbon supports was proposed.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
