A case of angioma serpiginosum treated by pulsed dye laser

Angioma serpiginosum (AS) is a rare acquired vascular lesion involving the superficial capillaries. The skin lesions usually presents in the first two decades of life and female are more affected. A typical lesion is characterized by deeply red non-palpable puncta that are grouped closely together in a macular or netlike pattern on the lower extremities and buttocks. A 10-years-old woman came to our clinic with purputic confluented macules on her left leg and thigh which had been present for about 2 years. Her lesions looked like portwine stain involving one leg, but in close observation, the lesions showed punctated appearance. In dermoscopy, numerous small, relatively well-demarcated, round to oval red lagoons were detected. A punch biopsy was done and histopathology of the specimen showed lobular proliferation of dilated capillary vessels arrranged in the papillary dermis. We concluded her lesions as AS on the base of dermoscopic finding and histopathologic features. We treated her with a 595nm pulsed dye laser(PDL). Unlike other portwine stains that require multiple laser treatments, it showed dramatic response to just single treatment. We suggest that dermoscopy is beneficial in the diagnosis of angioma serpiginosum due to its characteristic well-deparcated globules. Also, AS lesions are expected to have a very good response to pulsed dye laser due to its superfical location of vessels.
The Survey about the Degree of Damage of Radiation-Protective Shields in Operation Room

Background: Medical doctors who perform C-arm fluoroscopy-guided procedures are exposed to X-ray radiation. Therefore, radiation-protective shields are recommended to protect these doctors from radiation. For the past several years, these protective shields have sometimes been used without regular inspection. The aim of this study was to investigate the degree of damage to radiation-protective shields in the operating room. Methods: This study investigated 98 radiation-protective shields in the operation rooms of Konkuk University Medical Center and Jeju National University Hospital. We examined whether these shields were damaged or not with the unaided eye and by fluoroscopy. Results: There were seventy-one aprons and twenty-seven thyroid protectors in the two university hospitals. Fourteen aprons (19.7%) were damaged, whereas no thyroid protectors (0%) were. Of the twenty-six aprons, which have been used since 2005, eleven (42.3%) were damaged. Of the ten aprons, which have been used since 2008, none (0%) was damaged. Of the twenty-three aprons that have been used since 2009, two (8.7%) of them were damaged. Of the eight aprons used since 2010, one (12.3%) was damaged. Of the four aprons used since 2011, none (0%) of them were damaged. The most common site of damage to the radiation-protective shields was at the waist of the aprons (51%). Conclusions: As a result, aprons that have been used for a long period of time can have a higher risk of damage. Radiation-protective shields should be inspected regularly and exchanged for new products for the safety of medical workers.

Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been widely used for non-small-cell lung cancer patients. Its untoward cutaneous effects are largely well known and developed in many patients treated with EGFR TKIs. However trichomegaly of eyelash is rarely reported. Although trichomegaly is not a drug-limiting side effect, it could be troublesome of continuing the treatment because of cosmetic issue or eyeball irritation by long eyelashes. Therefore clinicians are needed to pay attention to this uncommon effect. We herein describe erlotinib induced trichomegaly of eyelashes in a woman with adenocarcinoma of the lung.

An investigation was conducted to examine the chemopreventive effects of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Mayer) extract (KGE) on the development of colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Five-week-old male F344 rats were fed with a diet containing 0.5% or 1% of KGE for 8 weeks. During the initial 2 weeks, the rats were subcutaneously injected with DMH (30 ㎎/㎏) or saline 4 times to induce colonic ACF. The ACF formed on the colonic mucosa were examined after staining with methylene blue. Four-times treatment with DMH induced mean 265.8 ± 48.3 ACF/colon composed of total 608.8 ± 110.9 aberrant crypts (AC)/colon. The numbers of ACF and AC induced by DMH were significantly decreased to 190.3±49.9 and 467.6±127.3, respectively, by treatment with 0.5% KGE, and further reduced to 168.1 and 389.8±125.1 by 1% KGE. Especially, the number of large ACF (≥4 AC/ACF), that had been suggested to possess a greater tumorigenic potential than small ACF (≤3 AC/ACF), was greatly suppressed from 39.9 ± 10.6 ACF/colon in control to 26.2± 11.1 ACF/colon in 1% KGE-treated group. These results suggest that KGE exert a chemopreventive effect on the DMH-induced colon cancer by inhibiting the development of ACF and AC in the rats.

이 연구는 지방정부 재난관리조직의 효율적 운영을 위해서 어떤 요인에 대한 정비가 필요한지를 도출하기 위하여, 지방정부 재난관리조직의 효율적 운영을 위한 요인 간 상대적 중요도 분석을 실시 하였다. 재난관리 관련 학계 전문가들은 재난관리 관련 법령간의 연계성 부족을 극복하고, 중앙정부 와 지방정부의 명확한 역할 구분이 이루어져야 한다고 생각하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이와 달리 재난관리 관련 실무 전문가들은 중앙정부의 재난관리 예산 지원 확대와 지방자치단체장의 관심 증 대와 재난관리 예산 증대가 중요하다고 인식하고 있다. 학계 전문가와 실무 전문가들이 중요시 여기 는 것 간에는 상당부분 유사성이 존재하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 다만 어느 것이 최우선적으로 중요한지에 대해서 학계 전문가들은 법제도적 요인을 가장 중요시하는 반면, 실무 전문가들은 재난 관리 예산 요인을 중요시한다는 점에서 차이가 나타났다. This study analyzes the relative importance among the determinants of efficient operation in disaster management department in local government in order to identify which determinants need improvements. It is found that scholarly communities in disaster management emphasize that the lack of connectivity among the disaster- related laws should be overcome and that role classification between central and local governments should be clarified. On the other hand, practitioners in the field of disaster management perceive that center government should expand budgetary support in disaster management and that local government leaders should enlarge their interests in disaster management and budget. Despite great similarities in important determinants between academic scholars and practitioners, it is worthwhile noting that academic scholars regarded legal and institutional factors most important while practitioners found budgetary factors most important.

Gangliosides play important roles in the control of several biological processes, including proliferation and transmembrane signaling. In this study, we demonstrate the effect of ganglioside GM1 on the proliferation of mouse induced pluripotent stem cells (miPSCs). The proliferation rate of miPSCs was lower than in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). Fluorescence activated cell sorting analysis showed that the percentage of cells in the G2/M phase in miPSCs was lower than that in mESCs. GM1 was expressed in mESCs, but not miPSCs. To confirm the role of GM1 in miPSC proliferation, miPSCs were treated with GM1. GM1-treated miPSCs exhibited increased cell proliferation and a larger number of cells in the G2/M phase. Furthermore, phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases was increased in GM1- treated miPSCs. [BMB Reports 2012; 45(12): 713-718]
