        Regulation of UVB-Induced IL-8 and MCP-1 Production in Skin Keratinocytes by Increasing Vitamin C Uptake via the Redistribution of SVCT-1 from the Cytosol to the Membrane

        It is well known that UVB (290–320 nm) induces inflammation in skin by the transcription and release of cytokines and chemokines from skin keratinocytes. In addition, it is considered that intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in UVB-induced inflammatory response in the skin. Therefore, we investigated the effect of vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, on the regulation of UVB-induced skin inflammation via the modulation of chemokines production. Vitamin C uptake into keratinocytes is increased by UVB irradiation in a time- and dose-dependent manner through the translocation of sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter-1 (SVCT-1), a vitamin C-specific transporter, from the cytosol to the membrane. To evaluate the effect of vitamin C on the chemokine mRNA expression, we performed RNase protection assay. As a result, there was a remarkable change in chemokine mRNA expression, especially IL-8 and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 expression. In addition, increased IL-8 and MCP-1 mRNA expressions were suppressed by vitamin C treatment. We also confirmed the results of protein levels measured by ELISA. Taken together, vitamin C uptake is increased in UVB-irradiated keratinocytes through the translocation of SVCT-1 and regulates inflammatory response in the skin via the downregulation of IL-8 and MCP-1 production.Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2007) 127, 698–706. doi:10.1038/sj.jid.5700572; published online 28 September 2006

        An operating system is program modules within a computer system that govern the control of equipment resources such as processors, main storage, secondary storages, input/output devices, and files. CNUOS is a research project on distributed operating systems being carried out at Chungnam National University. Its goal is to investigate capability-based, object oriented systems and to build a working prototype system to use and evaluate. In this system, user-level server processes provide functions that have been traditionally provided by the operating system. This approach leads to a small(hence more reliable)kernel and makes it easier to provide, modify, and test new services. In this paper, The kernel prototype of CNUOS will be proposed.

        A number of softwares have been being developed under DOS on personal computer. CNUOS is a distributed system that is designed to provide the environment upon which application programs developed under heterogeneous operating systems including DOS can be executed simultaneously. Protection is necessary for reliable mutitasking and can be used to prevent tasks from interfering with each other. In this paper, we will introduce two modules as a subset of CNUOS: the protection module and the DOS emulation module which is able to support the multiprogramming of DOS programs.

        Work Time scheduling representation is a kind of describing tool for parallel algorithms in the limited number of processors. Most people believe that it is trivial to convert from a parallel algorithm under assumption of the unlimited number of processors to the one in limited version. In this paper we will discuss what the problem is on this conversion and show how the general arithmetic expression is correctly represented by Work Time Scheduling as an example.

        Network protocol may be the most important component needed to construct computer network. One widely suggested protocol is the ISO OSI reference model, which has seven layers, each performing a well-defined function. Unfortunately, the overhead created by all these layers is substantial and plenty of computing capacity would be available for running complex protocols. A network protocol, CNUNP, is a proposed one aimed at the reduction of this protocol overheads. In this paper we will introduce the prototype design of lower layers for CNUNP, and discuss service functions in each layer and the implementation details.

        <P>α-Enolase (ENO1) is a multifunctional glycolytic enzyme expressed abundantly in the cytosol. It has been implicated in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Serum Abs against ENO1 were reported in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Cell-surface expression of ENO1 has been found to be increased rapidly in response to inflammatory stimuli, but its expression and function has not been reported in RA. In this study, we show that cell-surface expression of ENO1 is increased on monocytes and macrophages isolated from RA patients but not on those from osteoarthritis patients, and Ab against ENO1 can stimulate these cells to produce higher amounts of proinflammatory mediators, such as TNF-α, IL-1 α/β, IFN-γ, and PGE(2) via p38 MAPK and NF-κB pathway. The frequency of ENO1-positive cells in synovial fluid mononuclear cells was higher than PBMCs. ENO1-positive cells were also found in the inflamed synovium from RA patients and arthritic ankle tissues of mice with collagen-induced arthritis. Taken together, these findings suggest that Abs against ENO1 present in RA sera may stimulate monocytes and macrophages expressing cell-surface ENO1 and contribute to production of proinflammatory mediators during the effector phase of synovial inflammation.</P>

        Injury Characteristics and Predisposing Effects of Various Outdoor Traumatic Situations in Children and Adolescents

        Background: Many studies have reported injury characteristics of individual traumatic situations. However, a comparative analysis of specific risks is meaningful to better understand injury characteristics and help establish injury-prevention measures. This study was conducted to investigate and compare injury characteristics in children and adolescents by various outdoor traumatic situations. Methods: Outdoor traumatic situations were determined and classified into physical activity-related injury (n = 3,983) and pedestrian (n = 784) and passenger (n = 1,757) injuries in traffic accidents. Home injury (n = 16,121) was used as the control group. Then, the characteristics of each outdoor trauma were compared with 1:1 matched indoor trauma (among home injuries); each outdoor traumatic situation’s predisposing risk for the injured body part, injury type, and injury severity were analyzed; and changes by age of frequency ranking among physical activity-related injuries were investigated. Results: Outdoor trauma showed higher risks for limb injuries (injured body part), fracture and muscle/tendon injuries (injury type), and severe injuries (severity) than indoor trauma. Various outdoor traumatic situations presented different predisposing effects on injury characteristics. Among physical activity-related injuries, bicycle injury was commonest across all ages, and playing activities were common causes for injury for individuals of age < 9 years, whereas sports activities overwhelmed the common causes thereafter. Conclusions: The findings would help to better understand the specific injury risk of various outdoor traumatic situations and may potentially facilitate the establishment of more effective injury-prevention measures.

        Preoperative vitamin D level does not affect the short-term functional outcome after total knee arthroplasty in elderly women

        Background: We aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D levels on the functional outcome of elderly women who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods: Seven hundred and four patients (1013 knees) who underwent primary TKA were included in our retrospective study. Preoperative vitamin D levels were measured and the relationship analyzed between these and age, weight, height, body mass index, and bone mineral density. Two hundred and twenty patients (220 knees) who received unilateral TKA and were followed up for more than 1 year after operation were divided into two groups: Group 1, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) level < 20 ng/ml; and Group 2, 25(OH)D3 level ≥ 20 ng/ ml. Both groups were evaluated for the relationship between vitamin D levels and postoperative Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score, Knee Society Knee Score (KSKS), Knee Society Function Score (KSFS), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) score. Results: The number of vitamin D-deficient patients (< 20 ng/ml of serum 25(OH)D3 level) was 556 (79.0%). In the correlation analysis, the vitamin D level was negatively correlated with weight only (p = 0.033). No significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of postoperative VAS score, KSKS, KSFS, and WOMAC score. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in patients who underwent TKA. Vitamin D levels negatively correlated with weight. Low vitamin D level was not a risk factor for unsatisfactory TKA outcome in elderly women.

        상사의 윤리적리더십이 구성원의 직무몰입과 이직의도에 미치는 영향

        기업이 경쟁력을 확보함과 동시에 생존에 직결되는 중요한 요인 중의 하나인 기업들의 윤리 경영과 사회적 책임이 강조되고 있다. 또한, 기업의 이미지도 기업 성과에 영향력을 미치는 중요한 요인이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 기업이미지 및 사회적 책임은 윤리경영을 목표로 삼는 리더들에게 중요한 문제가 되며, 윤리적 리더십은 지향해야 하는 목표가 된다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 상사의 윤리적 리더십의 발휘가 구성원의 직무몰입과 이직의도에 미치는 영향에 대해 실증연구 하고자 하였다. 이러한 검증로 윤리적 리더십을 통해서 조직 구성원의 태도에 대한 시사점을 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과에 따르면, 상사의 윤리적 리더십 하위요소인 투명성과 정직성은 구성원의 직무몰입을 높이고 이직의도는 낮추는 것으로 나타났다. 결과에 따라, 윤리적 리더십은 인적자원관리에 있어서 중요한 리더십이 된다고 볼 수 있다. 경영환경의 불확실성의 증가에 따라 핵심역량 확보는 조직의 생존과 직결되는 중요한 변수로서 점점 더 강조되고 있다. 가장 중요한 핵심역량을 인적자본이라는 측면에서 고려한다면, 우수 인재의 확보가 가장 중요하다고 볼 수 있다. 리더십은 이런 우수 인재를 확보하고 유지하기 위해 강조되어야 할 것이라 볼 수 있다. 많은 리더십들 중에서, 윤리경영을 통해 조직의 경쟁우위를 확보하려는 차원에서, 윤리적 리더십의 정직성과 투명성은 중요한 관리 항목이라 판단된다. Ethical management and social responsibility of companies, which are one of the important factors directly connected to survival as well as securing competitiveness, are being emphasized. In addition, the image of a company can be said to be an important factor influencing corporate performance. Corporate image and social responsibility become important issues for leaders who aim for ethical management, and ethical leadership becomes the goal to be pursued. Therefore, in this study, an empirical study was attempted to investigate the effect of the ethical leadership of the supervisor on the employee’s job commitment and turnover intention. With this verification, we tried to present implications for the attitudes of members of the organization through ethical leadership. According to the results of this study, it was found that transparency and honesty, which are sub-elements of the ethical leadership of the supervisor, increase employees’ job involvement and lower the intention to turnover. As a result, it can be seen that ethical leadership becomes an important leadership in human resource management. As the uncertainty in the business environment increases, securing core competencies is increasingly being emphasized as an important variable directly connected to the survival of the organization. If the most important core competencies are considered in terms of human capital, securing excellent talent can be seen as the most important. Leadership should be emphasized in order to secure and retain such excellent talent. Among many leaderships, honesty and transparency of ethical leadership are considered to be important management items in order to secure an organization’s competitive advantage through ethical management.
