We describe a new leafminer, Phyllonorycter quintinipponicella Sato sp. nov. (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae:Lithocolletinae), of an evergreen oak, Quercus phillyreoides A. Gray (Fagaceae), from Japan. This species istetravoltine, overwintering as larvae in mines without diapause. It belongs to the P. nipponicella complexassociated with oaks. As a result, this complex consists of five species (the others are P. acutissimae(Kumata), P. nipponicella (Issiki), P. similis Kumata, and P. persimilis Fujihara, Sato & Kumata), which arealmost indistinguishable from each other in appearance. Nevertheless, the new species can be sharplydistinguished from the others by the pupal cremaster as well as male genitalia, but not by the femalegenitalia. In addition, P. quintinipponicella larvae, unlike those of the other species, do not form the frassinto a pile but leave it loose in the mine. Molecular analysis based on sequences of mitochondrial cy tochrome c oxidase subunit I showed that the new species is genetically distinct from the others. Theirhost-plant ranges indicated that evolutionary divergence in the complex should be linked to that of hostoaks. Further genetic and ecological studies are needed to clarify the evolutionary history of theP. nipponicella complex in combination with oak divergence.

High-frequency switching of the power converter enables reduction of the volume of inductors. On the other hand, a large temperature increase in the inductors occurs because the thermal resistance of the inductor increases. Hence, accurate loss calculation of the inductor is important in order to realize high-power-density converters. In the present paper, an accurate iron loss calculation method for the inductors is proposed by taking into consideration the non-uniformity of the magnetic flux density in the core.

Background/Aims: L-carnitine not only alleviates hyperammonemia and reduces muscle cramps in patients with liver cirrhosis, but also improves anemia in patients with chronic hepatitis and renal dysfunction. This study prospectively evaluated the preventative efficacy of L-carnitine supplementation against hemolytic anemia during antiviral treatment using ribavirin in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related chronic liver disease. Methods: A total of 41 patients with chronic hepatitis were consecutively enrolled in this study. Group A (n=22) received sofosbuvir plus ribavirin for 3 months, whereas group B (n=19) was treated with sofosbuvir, ribavirin, and L-carnitine. Hemoglobin concentration changes, the effects of antiviral treatment, and the health status of patients were analyzed using short form-8 questionnaires. Results: A significantly smaller decrease in hemoglobin concentration was observed in group B compared to group A at every time point. Moreover, the prescribed dose intensity of ribavirin in group B was higher than that of group A, resulting in a higher ratio of sustained virological response (SVR) 24 in group B compared with group A. The physical function of patients in group B was also significantly improved compared to group A at the end of antiviral treatment. Conclusions: L-carnitine supplementation alleviates ribavirin-induced hemolytic anemia in patients with HCV and helps relieve the physical burden of treatment with ribavirin-containing regimens. These advantages significantly increase the likelihood of achieving SVR.
Behavior of Plane Synthetic Jets Generated by an Asymmetric Stepped Slot

This paper presents a fundamental study of jet directional control, i.e., thrust vectoring, using a synthetic jet generated by an asymmetric stepped slot. We present and discuss the results for a synthetic jet generated by a one-sided asymmetric stepped slot and focus on the relationship between the traveling direction of the formed jet and the offset ratio of the stepped slot and/or dimensionless frequency of the synthetic jet, within a jet deflection angle range of 0–90°. We demonstrate that there is an optimum offset ratio for jet deflection under the same dimensionless frequency because the traveling direction of the synthetic jet is dependent on the offset ratio of the stepped slot and the dimensionless stroke length (dimensionless frequency).

The discovery of new antimalarial drugs can be developed using asynchronized Plasmodium berghei malaria parasites in vivo in mice. Studies on a particular stage are also required to assess the effectiveness and mode of action of drugs. In this report, we used endoperoxide 6-(1,2,6,7-tetraoxaspiro [7.11] nonadec-4-yl) hexan-1-ol (N-251) as a model antimalarial compound on P. chabaudi parasites. We examined the antimalarial effect of N-251 against ring-stage- and trophozoite-stage-rich P. chabaudi parasites and asynchronized P. berghei parasites using the 4-day suppressive test. The ED50 values were 27, 22, and 22 mg/kg, respectively, and the antimalarial activity of N-251 was verified in both rodent malaria parasites. To assess the stage-specific effect of N-251 in vivo, we evaluated the change of parasitemia and distribution of parasite stages using ring-stage- and trophozoite-stage-rich P. chabaudi parasites with one-day drug administration for one life cycle. We discovered that the parasitemias decreased after 13 and 9 hours post-treatment in the ring-stage- and trophozoite-stage-rich groups, respectively. Additionally, in the ring-stage-rich N-251 treated group, the ring-stage parasites hindered trophozoite parasite development. For the trophozoite-stage-rich N-251 treated group, the distribution of the trophozoite stage was maintained without a change in parasitemia until 9 hours. Because of these findings, it can be concluded that N-251 suppressed the trophozoite stage but not the ring stage. We report for the first time that N-251 specifically suppresses the trophozoite stage using P. chabaudi in mice. The results show that P. chabaudi is a reliable model for the characterization of stage-specific antimalarial effects.

Proton beam therapy is a type of radiation therapy and a promising modality for cancer management because it involves few adverse effects and high therapeutic efficacy. However, there are reports of acute and late complications because of normal tissue damage. Hemobilia, known as bleeding from the biliary tree, is observed in various conditions, and it can also be of iatrogenic origin such as due to percutaneous hepatobiliary interventions. In most cases, it can be managed conservatively without significant hemorrhage. However, in a few cases with massive hemobilia, further intervention is necessary. We report the successful use of a stent-graft in the portal vein to treat massive hemobilia with porto-biliary fistula that was caused by previous proton beam therapy.
