<P>Peroxiredoxin II knockout (Prdx II<SUP>−/−</SUP>) mice had a spontaneous phenotype of hemolytic anemia. In this study, we found that Ter-119<SUP>+</SUP>CD71<SUP>+</SUP> cells increased in Prdx II<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice bone marrow (BM) at 8 weeks of age. We examined the differential expression profiles to bone marrow cells (BMCs) between Prdx II<SUP>+/+</SUP> and Prdx II<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice using a cDNA microarray. We identified the 136 candidates were differentially expressed a greater twofold increase or decrease than EPO receptor. In this study, we focused on the up-regulated NBPs during erythropoietic differentiation. According to cDNA microarray results, six NBPs except zfp-127 were up-regulated during erythropoiesis in Prdx II<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. Among the six candidates, eIF3-p44, hnRNPH1, G3bp, and Zfpm-1 were dramatically increased at day 7 of the in vitro erythropoietic differentiation of human CD34<SUP>+</SUP> cells. However, DJ-1 and Rbm3 were slightly increased only at day 12. Our results suggest that up-regulated NBPs might be involved during erythropoietic differentiation. J. Cell. In this study, we evaluated whether the oral administration of chondroitin from the cartilage of Raja kenojei is effective on the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), using collagen-induced arthritic (CIA) mice. Arthritis development was delayed dose-dependently in the chondroitin-treated groups. The pre- and late-treated groups receiving 1,000 mg/kg of chondroitin had clinical scores that were reduced significantly by 56.9 (p<0.05) and 43.3% (p<0.05), respectively, compared to the vehicle-treated groups. Hematoxylin eosin staining and X-ray radiography showed that the chondroitins reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells and prevented joint destruction of the knee and paw. Reverse transcription-polyerase chain reaction analysis revealed that chondroitin administration inhibited the expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interlukin-1β (IL-1β), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in joints more than the administration of vehicle. Chondroitin treatment also decreased the production of rheumatoid factors (RF), IgG and IgM, in the serum of CIA mice. These results indicate that chondroitin administration has a protective effect involving the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production in CIA mice.

<P>Chemical doping can decrease sheet resistance of graphene while maintaining its high transparency. We report a new method to simultaneously transfer and dope chemical vapor deposition grown graphene onto a target substrate using a fluoropolymer as both the supporting and doping layer. Solvent was used to remove a significant fraction of the supporting fluoropolymer, but residual polymer remained that doped the graphene significantly. This contrasts with a more widely used supporting layer, polymethylmethacrylate, which does not induce significant doping during transfer. The fluoropolymer doping mechanism can be explained by the rearrangement of fluorine atoms on the graphene basal plane caused by either thermal annealing or soaking in solvent, which induces ordered dipole moments near the graphene surface. This simultaneous transfer and doping of the graphene with a fluoropolymer increases the carrier density significantly, and the resulting monolayer graphene film exhibits a sheet resistance of ∼320 Ω/sq. Classifying Endemic Fagaceae Species in Taiwan using Leaf Images

Fagaceae is one of the plant family which dominate the broad-leaved forests in Taiwan and have considerable value in economy and ecology. Traditionally, plant species identification based on leaf morphologies and is conducted using naked-eye observation. This study is proposed to distinguish the Fagaceae species using image processing and machine learning. In this study, leaf images of 10 Fagaceae species were collected. A serial of traits relevant to leaf morphologies, such as morphological, color, shape, and venation traits, were quantified from the leaf images. A support vector machine classifier was then developed to identify the species using the quantified traits. The proposed approach reached an identification accuracy of 95.8%.

유방촬영장치(mammography equipment, ME)을 이용한 유방검사(mammography, MG)의 경우 유방암의 조기진단을 위해 가장 일반적으로 시행되고 있는 검사방법으로 유방 내 섬유화 조직, 미소석회화 및 종양덩 어리의 발견과 진단은 유방촬영장치의 품질관리(quality management, QM)에 의해 크게 영향을 받게 된다. 특히, 유방검사에서 품질관리란 장치와 연관된 문제점들이 임상영상에서 영상의 질(image quality, IQ) 저하로 진단영역 축소를 초래할 수 있는 발생가능한 모든 문제점을 사전에 파악하여 교정함으로써 항상 일정 수준의 영상의 질을 유지하고 영상을 획득할 수 있게 하는 행위를 의미한다. 이에 본 연구진은 유방촬영장 치를 이용한 유방검사의 품질관리에 대한 일반적인 내용을 요약하여 보고 한다. Mammography using mammography equipment is a method of examination that is being employed most widely to diagnose the early stages of breast cancer. Detecting or diagnosing a fibrous tissue, micro calcification, or mass in the breast is influenced by the quality management of mammography equipment considerably. Particularly in mammography, quality management refers to a behavior of figuring out and correcting all sorts of hindrance factors that can cause all the problems related to the equipment associated with the diminishment of diagnosed area due to the reduction of image quality in clinical imaging in advance and maintaining a consistent level of image quality and obtaining a proper image. Here, these researchers aim to summarize and report the general contents of quality management in mammography using mammography equipment.

Background: There is still unmet need in treating neuropathic pain and increasing awareness regarding the use of drug combinations to increase the effectiveness of treatment and reduce adverse effects in patients with neuropathic pain. Methods: This study was performed to determine the individual and combined effects of pregabalin, tianeptine, and clopidogrel in a rat model of neuropathic pain. The model was created by ligation of the L5-L6 spinal nerve in male Sprague–Dawley rats; mechanical allodynia was confirmed using von Frey filaments. Drugs were administered to the intrathecal space and mechanical allodynia was assessed; drug interactions were estimated by isobolographic or fixed-dose analyses. Results: Intrathecal pregabalin and tianeptine increased the mechanical withdrawal threshold in a dose-dependent manner, but intrathecal clopidogrel had little effect on the mechanical withdrawal threshold. An additive effect was noted between pregabalin and tianeptine, but not between pregabalin and clopidogrel. Conclusions: These findings suggest that intrathecal coadministration of pregabalin and tianeptine effectively attenuated mechanical allodynia in the rat model of neuropathic pain. Thus, pregabalin plus tianeptine may be a valid option to enhance the efficacy of neuropathic pain treatment.

Central neurocytoma (CN) is a rare, benign brain tumor often located in the lateral ventricles. CN may cause obstructive hydrocephalus and manifest as signs of increased intracranial pressure. The goal of treatment for CN is a gross total resection (GTR), which often yields excellent prognosis with a very high rate of tumor control and survival. Adjuvant radiosurgery and radiotherapy may be considered to improve tumor control when GTR cannot be achieved. Chemotherapy is also not considered a primary treatment, but has been used as a salvage therapy. The radiological features of CN are indistinguishable from those of other brain tumors; therefore, many histological markers, such as synaptophysin, can be very useful for diagnosing CNs. Furthermore, the MIB-1 Labeling Index seems to be correlated with the prognosis of CN. We also discuss oncogenes associated with these elusive tumors. Further studies may improve our ability to accurately diagnose CNs and to design the optimal treatment regimens for patients with CNs.
