Vol.27 No.3
This case study aims to derive practical implications for improving the system at A university by identifying the problems and contextual factors of convergence major implementation from the perspective of participating students majoring in convergence major at A University’s College of Education. To this end, researchers held an interview with 15 students and two professors who are assigned to convergence major at A University. The data analysis was based on Kinosita’s Modified Grounded Theory Approach(M-GTA). From the perspective of learners belonging to college of education, several problems such as ambiguity of interdisciplinary convergence and lack of administrative services were found throughout the implementation of the whole convergence major. In particular, students from college of education who complete convergence majors organized by other colleges were suffering from lack of proper consideration for school internship practice. These difficulties are at the individual level (readiness for convergence majors, career awareness, positive attitude of students accepting new things), lack of interest and support from faculty members, and lack of administrative and financial support for convergence majors from the university. Based on these results, researchers proposed a couple of solutions for the effective operation of convergence major in college of education at A University.
Distance Suppression as a Predictive Factor in Progression of Intermittent Exotropia
Gyeongmin Yoo,Suk-Gyu Ha,Seung-Hyun Kim 대한안과학회 2019 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.33 No.5
Purpose: To address the natural course of intermittent exotropia with small exodeviations (less than 20 prism diopters [PD]) according to the status of suppression, and to evaluate whether suppression testing at the initial visit can assist in predicting the progression of intermittent exotropia. Methods: Clinical records of patients at the Korea University Anam Hospital, Seoul, Korea diagnosed between January 2014 and December 2018 with basic-type intermittent exotropia and initial distance deviations of less than 20 PD, older than four years of age and a minimum of three follow-up visits within a 6-month span were retrospectively reviewed. The participants were divided into two groups, the suppression group and the non-suppression group, based on the Vectogram results at the initial visit. Clinical characteristics, rate of surgery, and rate of progression were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 71 patients were included. Among them, 16 patients (22.5%) had visual suppression at the initial visit, while 55 patients (77.5%) had no suppression. At the initial visit, the mean distant angle of deviation was 13.7 ± 3.2 PD (range, 4 to 18 PD) in the suppression group and 12.7 ± 3.4 PD (range, 10 to 18 PD) in the non-suppression group. Ten patients (62.5%) underwent surgery in the suppression group and 12 patients (21.8%) underwent surgery in the non-suppression group (p < 0.01). Eleven patients (68.8%) in the suppression group and 13 (23.6%) in the non-suppression group developed progression (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Suppression testing was important to predict the progression of intermittent exotropia, in patients with exodeviation angles less than 20 PD at the initial visit.
Traffic light recognition with HUV-histogram from daytime driving-view images
Vol.2017 No.10
Signals of traffic lights are important factors in traffic environment analysis. Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADASs), which need to be aware of surrounding traffic environments to assist drivers, are required to be able to recognize signals of traffic lights. We propose robust, Korean-standard-based, computerized methods to recognize traffic lights in daytime driving-view images. The images captured by the camera mounted on the vehicle. To detect traffic lights in the images, we use the Aggregate Channel Features (ACF). To recognize states of traffic lights, we remove irrelevant background pixels in the detected traffic light image patches by using visual saliency analysis, then we train support vector machine (SVM) with HUV-histogram. Our methods do not require any specific sensors such as Lidar or external systems such as car-to-car networks. This makes our methods to be easily ported over to existing automotive control platforms. 13,500 frames of videos were used to test our methods. The traffic light recognition accuracy is 0.97.

foOBJECTIVES: The reported effects of digital media overuse on physical activity among adolescents are inconsistent. This study examined the association between hours of digital media use and lack of moderate-intensity physical exercise (mPE) according to the type of digital media. METHODS: This study included 1,837 middle school students from the iCURE (Internet user Cohort for Unbiased Recognition of gaming disorder in Early Adolescence) study conducted in Korea. Hours spent using digital media were measured by self-reported daily usage time for Internet games, messengers, social media, and watching game streaming on weekdays. Lack of mPE was defined as performing a minimum of 30 minutes at a time less than twice weekly. Multivariable logistic regression analysis stratified by sex was performed. RESULTS: Among male students, the group with the highest hours of using either Internet games or watching game streaming was more likely to lack mPE than each non-user group. In contrast, among male students, the group using either messengers or social media had a higher rate of mPE compared to each non-user group. Female students showed no association between hours spent using Internet games, messengers, social media, or watching game streaming and a lack of mPE. CONCLUSIONS: Among male middle school students in Korea, the excessive use of Internet games or watching game streaming was associated with a lack of mPE. Thus, guidelines should be established regarding adolescent use of internet games and watching game streaming.
