In this study, we focused on natural water-soluble antioxidants from fresh water microalgae, Pediastrum duplex and Dactylococcopsis fascicularis from Jeju Island, Korea. They were prepared by enzymatic digestion using five carbohydrases (Viscozyme, Celluclast, AMG, Termamyl and Ultraflo) and five proteases (Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme and Alcalase), and the potential antioxidant activity of each was assessed. All enzymatic digests from P. duplex showed significant DPPH scavenging effects. Termamyl (60.6%) digest from P. duplex possessed the highest effects on hydrogen peroxide scavenging. Celluclast (58.1%) and Kojizyme digests (56.9%) from D. fascicularis possessed higher effects on superoxide anion radical scavenging. All enzymatic digests exhibited significant effects on both NO· scavenging and metal chelating. Lipid peroxidation was significantly in inhibited Viscozyme, Termamyl and Kojizyme digests from P. duplex and Ultraflo, Protamex, Kojizyme and Alcalase digests from D. fascicularis. These data suggest that enzymatic digests of the fresh water microalgae, P. duplex and D. fascicularis might be valuable sources of antioxidant which can be applied in food and pharmaceutical industry.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A series of 4-aryl-thieno[1,4]diazepin-2-one were synthesized and evaluated for their antiproliferative activities against the A375P melanoma and U937 hematopoietic cell lines. Several compounds showed very potent antiproliferative activities toward both cell lines and the activities were better than that of sorafenib, the reference standard. Derivatives were made as amide (<B>8a</B>–<B>8i</B>, <B>9a</B>–<B>9m</B>) and urea (<B>10a</B>–<B>10d</B>, <B>11a</B>–<B>11d</B>) with diverse hydrophobic moieties. One of the most potent inhibitor <B>10d</B>, 1-(4-((4-ethylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(4-(2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-<I>1H</I>-thieno [3,4-<I>b</I>][1,4]diazepin-4-yl)phenyl)urea was found to be very potent inhibitor of multi-protein kinases including FMS kinase (IC<SUB>50</SUB> = 3.73 nM) and is a promising candidate for further development in therapeutics for cancer.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Recent global climate change is producing an enormous demand for alternative edible protein sources from plants, insects, and microorganisms. To find out affordable microbial proteins, we examined the nutritional composition of fungus, Rhizopus oryzae, as an alternative mycoprotein. R. oryzae is a starter of "Tempeh", food for many people around the world. Using freeze-dried culture samples, we analyzed nutrients and amino acid compositions from 4 strains of R. oryzae (KACC No. 40228, 40533, 40534, and 40536). All strains contained crude protein contents between 30-40%, carbohydrate contents of 40-50%, and fat contents of 10-20%. Among them, R. oryzae KACC 40536 showed the highest protein content (41.08%) and the lowest fat content (8.72%). Further amono acid analysis of R. oryzae KACC 40536 showed that the amounts of its essential amino acids, including valine, lysine, isoleucine, tryptophan and threonine met recommendable daily-intake standards set by FAO/WHO. Our results show that R. oryzae KACC 40536 may provide a putative alternative mycoprotein.
Current Research on Conducting Polymer-Carbon Nanocomposites for Bioengineering Applications

Conducting polymers and carbon nanomaterials offer a wide range of applications because of their unique soft conducting properties. Specifically, these conducting polymer-carbon nanocomposites have recently been utilized in bioengineering applications, partly because of their improved biocompatibility compared to conventional conducting materials such as metals and ceramics. Based on the assumption that these composites offer an important application potential as functional materials for biomedical devices or even as biomaterials, this review surveys the recent research trends on conducting polymers-carbon nanocomposites, focusing on bioengineering applications such as polyaniline (PANI), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or PEDOT, polypyrrole (Ppy), and carbon nanotubes and graphene.
대학생 비폭음 음주 집단과 비음주 집단의 기질 및 성격 특성 비교

본 연구는 대학생을 대상으로 폭음 수준에 미치지 않는 음주 집단과 비음주 집단의 기질 및 성격 특성의 차이를 비교하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울 소재 S 대학교 재학생을 대상으로 자기보고 자료를 수집하여 음주 빈도와 음주량을 기준으로 25명의 비폭음 음주 집단과 28명의 비음주 집단으로 나누고 이들의 기질 및 성격 척도(TCI)의 척도 점수를 비교하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 기질 차원에서 두 집단 간 자극추구(NS)의 차이는 유의하지 않았고 위험회피(HA)는 비폭음 음주 집단에서 비음주 집단보다 더 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 성격 차원에서 비폭음 음주 집단의 자율성(SD)이 비음주 집단보다 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 음주행위의 유형에 따른 대학생의 성격 특성에 대한 이해를 넓히고자 하였으며, 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 향후 연구의 방향을 제시하였다. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in temperament and character dimensions of the drinking group that do not meet the level of binge drinking and the non-drinking group in college students. Self-report data were collected from S University students in Seoul, divided into 25 non-binge drinking group and 28 non-drinking group based on drinking frequency and amount of alcohol and then compared the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) scales. As a result, first, in terms of temperament, the difference in novelty seeking (NS) between the two groups was not significant, and harm avoidance (HA) was found to be lower in the non-binge drinking group than in the non-drinking group. Second, in terms of personality, it was found that self-directedness (SD) of the non-binge drinking was higher than that of the non-drinking group. This study attempted to broaden the understanding of the personality characteristics of college students according to the type of drinking behavior, and based on these results, the directions for future research were presented.
Chiral Cyclodimeric Zinc(II) Complexes: Enantio-recognition via Differential Pulse Voltammetry

<P>Self-assembly of a series of ZnX<SUB>2</SUB> (X<SUP>-</SUP> = Cl<SUP>-</SUP>, Br<SUP>-</SUP>, and I<SUP>-</SUP>) with (<I>S</I>)-(1-isonicotinoylpyrrolidin-2-yl)methyl isonicotinate (L) as a new chiral hemicircular bidentate ligand yields a system comprising 30-membered metallacyclodimeric species [ZnX<SUB>2</SUB>L]<SUB>2</SUB> with two chiral centers. In the solid state, the metallacyclodimers’ packing arrays differ according to the anions and nestled solvate molecules. In the present study, the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique was employed for chiral discrimination of amino acid enantiomers with <I>S</I>-chiral [ZnX<SUB>2</SUB>L]<SUB>2</SUB> and was found to be an effective tool for enantio-recognition of amino acids.</P><P>Chiral cyclodimeric species [ZnX<SUB>2</SUB>L]<SUB>2</SUB> (X<SUP>−</SUP> = Cl<SUP>−</SUP>, Br<SUP>−</SUP>, and I<SUP>−</SUP>) have showed significant enantioselective chiral recognition for amino acids via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). <I>S</I>-Chiral zinc(II) cyclodimers provide more effective enantio-recognition with the <SMALL>D</SMALL>-form than with the <SMALL>L</SMALL>-form amino acids. Objective Mood disorder and borderline personality pathology (BPP) are frequently comorbid and relate to childhood trauma. We investigated the relationship between childhood trauma and BPP features in mood disorder patients versus controls.Methods A total of 488 mood disorder patients, particularly major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar I disorder (BD I), and bipolar II disorder (BD II), and 734 controls were included. We examined between-group BPP-related differences and correlated between BPP and childhood trauma using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ) and the Personality Assessment Inventory–Borderline Features Scale.Results BD II patients showed significantly higher BPP. Emotional abuse and neglect were prominently associated with BPP, while affective instability and negative relationships exhibited a stronger association with childhood trauma. We also found a positive relationship between childhood trauma and BPP in MDD, BD I, and BD II patients.Conclusion The findings of the present study imply that BPP features are more likely to be found in patients with BD II than BD I or MDD. Mood disorder patients with severe childhood trauma may have higher BPP features. Thus, further study of the relationship between childhood trauma and BPP features could improve the therapeutic approaches and help understand patients with mood disorders.
