A series of organic-inorganic sol-gel matrices were used as hosts for a chloride ionophore in chloride-selective membranes: their potentiometric performances were compared to those obtained with traditional PVC-and carboxylated PVC-based membranes without any plasticizers.

Quality of life is closely related to anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Several studies have reported on anemia in patients with IBD in Western countries. This study investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of anemia in Korean patients with IBD. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 92 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 76 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) who were followed regularly at a single tertiary medical center in Korea between January 2003 and December 2012. Hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds used to define anemia were <13.0 g/dL in men and <12.0 g/dL in women according to the World Health Organization criteria. We chose the lowest Hb level in each year as a representative value because Hb levels changed at each examination and anemia was associated with disease deterioration. The relationship between clinical variables and lowest Hb level was assessed. Results: The prevalence of anemia was 36.3% in patients with UC and 41.6% in patients with CD. Anemia in patients with CD was associated with hospital admission, 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) and infliximab treatment in men. Anemia in patients with UC was associated with hospital admission, oral steroid use, thiopurine and infliximab treatment in men. Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia in Korean patients with IBD was comparable to that of patients in Western countries. Anemia was associated with male patients with CD who were admitted to the hospital and received medications including 5-ASA and infliximab, and men with UC who were admitted to the hospital and received medications including oral steroids, thiopurine and infliximab. A Sequential Updating Method of the Euler Parameters
Bae, Dae-Sung 한양대학교 공학기술연구소 1994 공학기술논문집 Vol.3 No.1
This paper develops a sequential updating method of the Euler parameter generalized coordinates for machine kinematics and dynamics. The Newton's method is slightly modified so as to utilize the Jacobian matrix with respect to virtual rotation instead of Euler parameters. An intermediate variable is introduced and the modified Newton's method solves for the variable first. The relational equation of the intermediate variable is then solved with the Euler parameter normalization constraint to obtain an updating formula of the Euler parameters. The solution process is carried out efficiently by symbolic inversion of the relational equation of the intermediate variable and the iteration equation of the Euler parameter normalization constraint. The proposed method is applied to a kinematic and dynamic analysis with the Generalized Coordinate Partitioning method. Convergence analysis is performed to guarantee the local convergence of the proposed method. To demonstrate the validity and practicality of the proposed method, kinematic analysis of a motion base system is carried out.

Mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) are glycolipids and have several pharmacological efficacies. MELs also show skin-moisturizing efficacy through a yet-unknown underlying mechanism. Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) is a membrane protein that contributes to the water homeostasis of the epidermis, and decreased AQP3 expression following ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation of the skin is associated with reduced skin moisture. No previous study has examined whether the skin-moisturizing effect of MELs might act through the modulation of AQP3 expression. Here, we report for the first time that MELs ameliorate the UVA-induced downregulation of AQP3 in cultured human epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT keratinocytes). Our results revealed that UVA irradiation decreases AQP3 expression at the protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) levels, but that MEL treatment significantly ameliorated these effects. Our mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitor analysis revealed that phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), but not extracellular signal-regulated kinase or p38, mediates UVA-induced AQP3 downregulation, and that MEL treatment significantly suppressed the UVA-induced phosphorylation of JNK. To explore a possible mechanism, we tested whether MELs could regulate the expression of peroxidase proliferator-activated receptor gamma ($PPAR-{\gamma}$), which acts as a potent transcription factor for AQP3 expression. Interestingly, UVA irradiation significantly inhibited the mRNA expression of $PPAR-{\gamma}$ in HaCaT keratinocytes, whereas a JNK inhibitor and MELs significantly rescued this effect. Taken together, these findings suggest that MELs ameliorate UVA-induced AQP3 downregulation in HaCaT keratinocytes by suppressing JNK activation to block the decrease of $PPAR-{\gamma}$. Collectively, our findings suggest that MELs can be used as a potential ingredient that modulates AQP3 expression to improve skin moisturization following UVA irradiation-induced damage.
Configuration sensitivity analysis of mechanical dynamics
Bae, Dae sung 한국공작기계학회 2001 한국생산제조학회지 Vol.10 No.1
Design sensitivity is an important device in improving a mechanical system design. A continuum design consists of the shape and orientation design. This research develops the shape and orientation design sensitivity method. The configuration design variables of multibody systems define the shape and orientation changes. The equations of motion are directly differentiated to obtain the governing equations for the design sensitivity. The governing equation of the design sensitivity is formulated as an overdetermined differential algebraic equation and treated as ordinary differential equations on manifolds. The material derivative of a domain functional is performed to obtain the sensitivity due to shape and orientation changes. The configuration design sensitivities of a fly-ball governor system and a spatial four bar mechanism are obtained using the proposed method and arc validated against those obtained from the finite difference method.
