      • Probiotic properties of Pediococcus strains isolated from jeotgals, salted and fermented Korean sea-food

        Lee, K.W.,Park, J.Y.,Sa, H.D.,Jeong, J.H.,Jin, D.E.,Heo, H.J.,Kim, J.H. Academic Press 2014 Anaerobe Vol.28 No.-

Three Pediococcus pentosaceus strains were isolated from jeotgals, salted and fermented Korean sea-foods, and their probiotic potentials were examined. After 2 h exposure to pH 3.0, P. pentosaceus F66 survived with the survival ratio of 32.6% followed by P. pentosaceus D56 (17.2%) and P. pentosaceus A24 (7.5%). P. pentosaceus F66 also survived better (26.6%) than P. pentosaceus A24 (13.7%) and P. pentosaceus D56 (5.8%) after 2 h exposure to 0.3% bile salts. Three strains grew slowly on MRS broth with 15% NaCl (w/v), reaching the OD600 values of 0.4-0.8 in 36 h. They adhered to Caco-2 cells (10.9-13.9 CFU/cell) with similar degree of adherence of a positive control, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (12.8 +/- 0.5 CFU/cell). Three strains possess some desirable enzyme activities such as β-galactosidase, α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, and N-acetyl-β-glucosidase. From these results, P. pentosaceus F66 seems qualified as a probiotic and can be utilized for fermented foods including jeotgals.

Sensorless Fault Tolerant Control for Induction Motors

        Nadia Djeghali,Malek Ghanes,Saїd Djennoune,Jean-Pierre Barbot 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2013 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.11 No.3

In this paper, a sensorless fault tolerant controller for induction motors is developed. In the proposed approach, a robust controller based on backstepping strategy is designed in order to compensate for both the load torque disturbance and the rotor resistance variation caused by the broken rotor bars faults. The proposed approach needs neither fault detection and isolation schemes nor controller re-design. Moreover, to avoid the use of speed and flux sensors, a second order sliding mode observer is introduced to estimate the flux and the speed. The observer converges in a finite time and leads to good estimates of the flux and the speed even in the presence of the rotor resistance variation and the load torque disturbance. Since the observer converges in the finite time, the stability of the closed-loop system (controller with observer) is shown in two steps. First, the boundedness of the closed-loop sys-tem trajectories before the convergence of the observer is proved. Second, the convergence of the closed-loop system trajectories is proved after the convergence of the observer. To highlight the effi-ciency and applicability of the proposed control scheme, simulation and experimental results are con-ducted for a 1.5 kW induction motor.

A multi-institutional analysis of sternoclavicular joint coverage following osteomyelitis

        Sammy Othman,Omar Elfanagely,Saïd C. Azoury,Geoffrey M. Kozak,Jessica Cunning,Arturo J. Rios-Diaz,Prashanth Palvannan,Patrick Greaney,Matthew P. Jenkins,Doraid Jarrar,Stephen J. Kovach,John P. Fischer 대한성형외과학회 2020 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.47 No.5

Background Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) osteomyelitis is a rare pathology requiring urgent intervention. Several operative approaches have been described with conflicting reports. Here, we present a multi-institutional study utilizing multiple surgical pathways for SCJ reconstruction. Methods A multi-institutional retrospective cohort study was conducted to identify patients who underwent surgical repair for sternoclavicular osteomyelitis between 2008 and 2019. Patients were stratified according to reconstruction approach: single-stage reconstruction with advancement flap and delayed-reconstruction with flap following initial debridement. Demographics, operative approach, type of reconstruction, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Results Thirty-two patients were identified. Mean patient age was 56.2±13.8 years and 68.8% were male. The average body mass index (BMI) was 30.0±8.8 kg/m2. The most common infection etiologies were intravenous drug use and bacteremia (both 25%). Fourteen patients (43.8%) underwent one-stage reconstruction and 18 (56.2%) underwent delayed twostaged reconstruction. Both single and delayed-stage groups had comparable rates of reinfection (7.1% vs. 11.1%, respectively), surgical site complications (21.4% vs. 27.8%), readmissions (7.1% vs. 16.6%), and reoperations (7.1% vs. 5.6%; all P>0.05). The single-stage reconstruction group had a significantly lower BMI (26.2±5.7 kg/m2 vs. 32.9±9.1 kg/m2; P<0.05) and trended towards shorter hospital length of stay (11.3 days vs. 17.9 days; P=0.01). Conclusions Both single and delayed-stage approaches are appropriate methods with comparable outcomes for reconstruction for SCJ osteomyelitis. When clinically indicated, a singlestage reconstruction approach may be preferable in order to avoid a second operation as associated with the delayed phase, and possibly shortening total hospital length of stay.

Some asymptotic properties for a smooth kernel estimator of the conditional mode under random censorship

Salah Khardani,Elias Ould Saïd,Mohamed Lemdani 한국통계학회 2010 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.39 No.4

Let (Ti)1≤i≤n be a sample of independent and identically distributed (iid) random variables (rv) of interest and (Xi)1≤i≤n be a corresponding sample of covariates. In censorship models the rv T is subject to random censoring by another rv C. Let θ(x) be the conditional mode function of the density of T given X = x. In this work we define a new smooth kernel estimator ˆθn(x) of θ(x) and establish its almost sure convergence and asymptotic normality. An application to prediction and confidence bands is also given. Simulations are drawn to lend further support to our theoretical results for finite sample sizes.

Transition Between Severe and Mild Wear of 2024A-T4 Anodized Aluminum Alloy under Severe Wear Conditions

Tekkouk Nazih,Arbaoui Mohamed,Abdi Saîd,Rezzoug Amine 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.76 No.10

Aluminium alloys are gradually replacing grey cast iron in the automotive industry thanks to its low density. The purpose of this study is to evaluate tribological properties of 2024A anodized aluminium alloy under severe wear conditions. For this aim we are investigating the effect of the sliding speed and the anodic layer in order to improve the wear resistance and friction properties of 2024A aluminium alloy and this by using the latter with the hard metal chrome steel 100C6 in dry punctual contact. So we shall evaluate hardness, wear rate and friction properties after and before the anodizing process. The results have shown that the sliding speed affects a transition from severe wear to mild wear when u = 0.3 m/s for the alloy covered by hard anodic layer, as well as it was a significant decrease in wear rate.

Evaluation of shear capacity of FRP reinforced concrete beams using artficial neural networks

        M. Nehdi,H. El Chabib,A. Saïd 국제구조공학회 2006 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.2 No.1

To calculate the shear capacity of concrete beams reinforced with fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP), current shear design provisions use slightly modified versions of existing semi-empirical shear design equations that were primarily derived from experimental data generated on concrete beams having steel reinforcement. However, FRP materials have different mechanical properties and mode of failure than steel, and extending existing shear design equations for steel reinforced beams to cover concrete beams reinforced with FRP is questionable. This paper investigates the feasibility of using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to estimate the nominal shear capacity, Vn of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. Experimental data on 150 FRP-reinforced beams were retrieved from published literature. The resulting database was used to evaluate the validity of several existing shear design methods for FRP reinforced beams, namely the ACI 440-03, CSA S806-02, JSCE-97, and ISIS Canada-01. The database was also used to develop an ANN model to predict the shear capacity of FRP reinforced concrete beams. Results show that current guidelines are either inadequate or very conservative in estimating the shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams. Based on ANN predictions, modified equations are proposed for the shear design of FRP reinforced concrete beams and proved to be more accurate than existing equations.

Ameliorative or corrective effects of Fig “Ficus carica” extract on nickel-induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats

        Nemiche Souhila,Ait Hamadouche Nadia,Nemmiche Saïd,Fauconnier Marie-Laure,Tou Abdenacer 한국독성학회 2022 Toxicological Research Vol.38 No.3

Many heavy metals and metalloids (e.g., Pb, Cd, and Ni) can contaminate the environment and cause severe health problems. Through this study, investigated the possible corrective effects of Ficus carica extract (FCE) against nickel (Ni) induced stress response and damage on the liver of rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups (8 rats per group) and cotreated with FCE (350 mg/kg) and exposed to Nickel chloride (10 mg/kg) for 4 weeks. The volatile compounds of FCE were characterized by solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) coupled with GC–MS, and the biochemical parameters of stress were determined. The SPME–GC/MS analysis of FCE indicated the presence of thirty (30) phyto-bioactive compounds including alcohols, aldehydes, organic acids, ketones, furans, terpenes, ester and others. The best capacity for scavenging DPPH free radicals and metal chelating were found with the IC50 values of 0.49 and 2.91 mg/mL, respectively. Ni induced damage to various macromolecules. Malondialdehyde, protein carbonyls, alanine aminotransferase and gamma glutamyl transferarse levels were significantly increased in Ni exposed group compared to control group and co-treatment with FCE reduced the levels of these parameters. In conclusion, current findings showed that Ni-induced oxidative damage and the administration of FCE can improve correct and restore the alteration in the rat liver.

Asymptotic normality of a robust estimator of the regression function for functional time series data

Mohammed Attouch,Ali Laksaci,Elias Ould Saïd 한국통계학회 2010 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.39 No.4

We propose a family of robust nonparametric estimators for a regression function based on the kernel method. We establish the asymptotic normality of the estimator under the concentration property on small balls probability measure of the functional explanatory variable when the observations exhibit some kind of dependence. This approach can be applied in time series analysis to make prediction and build confidence bands.Weillustrate our methodology on the US electricity consumption data.

Mechanical & Interfacial Properties of Bamboo Lamella-PP Composites – Effect of Lamella Treatment

        Pierre Ovlaque,Marie Bayart,Patrice Cousin,Julien Durand,Grégoire Mercusot,Saïd Elkoun,Mathieu Robert 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.5

This study aims at measuring the interfacial properties of natural fibers in polypropylene composites by the meanof direct methods of characterization. Bamboo lamellae (BL) and polypropylene (PP) were used to produce laminatedcomposites with continuous and homogenous interfaces. This research also focuses on the effect of maleic anhydride-graftedPP (MAPP) on the improvement of the PP/BL composites interfacial properties, which were measured by the means of thedouble cantilever beam (DCB), end-notched flexure (ENF) and short beam shear (SBS) methods. Flexural properties of thedifferent composites were also determined using the three-point bending and single cantilever modes by dynamic mechanicalanalysis (DMA). The retention rates (Rr) of mechanical and interfacial properties were calculated on samples aged in hotwater. Results reveal that MAPP induced a significant increase in flexural properties. This is undeniably related to anenhancement of affinity between PP and BL that was confirmed by DCB, ENF and SBS tests results. It was also highlightedthat MAPP tends to limit degradation of the composite interfacial properties with, for instance, a critical fracture toughness(mode I) Rr of 97 % for MAPP coated composites against 56 % for the untreated composites.
