Patients with a cleft lip nasal deformities hope for a pleasing nasal profile, a well-defined angular nasal tip, and symmetry of the nose. The main objective of the correction of cleft lip nasal deformity is to achieve nasal symmetry and an improved nasolabial relationship. The present study was carried out to assess the effect and prognosis of correction of cleft lip nasal deformity with L-shaped iliac bone graft. We performed correction surgery of the severe cleft lip nasal deformity with the autogenous L-shaped iliac bone graft in five patients and described the technique of correction. The columella portion of the L-shaped graft provided stabilization, eliminating the see-saw effect of the bridge on the bony fulcrum of the bony bridge, The disadvantage of this technique was stiffening of the nasal tip, which included the distal end of the grafted bone. However, the nasal tip gradually becomes softer, probably due to resorption of the bony edge several months after the operation. We obtained stable and symmetric reconstruction of the supporting elements of the nose. These results suggest that L-shaped iliac bone graft is stable and esthetic reconstruction method for correction of the severe cleft lip nasal deformity

Acute thyroid abscess is an uneommon type of neck infection. We experienced a case of staphylococcal thyroid abscess in 29 year old man, diagnosed by needle aspira~tion and culture of the aspirate. The patient had complained fever and slowly growing anterior neck swelling. Needle aspiration of the cold nodule prior to broad spectrum antibiotics was performed. After Surgical excision combined with antibiotics, he was discharged with elinical improvement. The laboratory diagnosis and clinical course was summarized and is reported with relevent references(J Kor Soc Endoerinol ll:207213, 1996).

A multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of Clover yellow vein virus (ClYVV), Peanut mottle virus (PeMoV), and Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), which were recently reported to infect soybean and azuki bean in Korea. Species-specific primer sets were designed for the detection of each virus, and their specificity and sensitivity were tested using mixed primer sets. From among the designed primer sets, two combinations were selected and further evaluated to estimate the detection limits of uniplex, duplex, and multiplex RT-PCR. The multiplex RT-PCR assay could be a useful tool for the field survey of plant viruses and the rapid detection of ClYVV, PeMoV, and TSWV in leguminous plants.

Background Adjuvant therapy after breast surgery, including tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors, improves the postoperative outcomes and long-term survival of breast cancer patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether volume changes occurred in the contralateral breast during hormonal or other adjuvant therapies. Methods This study reviewed 90 patients who underwent unilateral breast reconstruction between September 2012 and April 2018 using tissue expanders and a permanent implant after the surgical removal of breast cancer. The volume of the contralateral breast was measured using a cast before the first (tissue expander insertion) and second (permanent implant change) stages of surgery. Changes in breast volume were evaluated to determine whether adjuvant therapy such as hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy influenced the volume of the contralateral breast. Results The group receiving tamoxifen therapy demonstrated a significant decrease in volume compared with the group without tamoxifen (-7.8% vs. 1.0%; P=0.028). The aromatase inhibitor-treated group showed a significant increase in volume compared with those who did not receive therapy (-6.2% vs. 4.5%; P=0.023). There were no significant differences between groups treated with other hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. Conclusions Patients who received tamoxifen therapy showed a significant decrease in volume in the contralateral breast, while no significant change in weight or body mass index was found. Our findings suggest that we should choose smaller implants for premenopausal patients, who have a high likelihood of receiving tamoxifen therapy.

Cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV) is a major virus infecting orchid plants and causing economic loss. In this study, the incidence of viral infection in Calanthe spp. at the Korean Institute of Calanthe was investigated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The CymMV infection rate was 42%, and the two viruses Odontoglossum ringspot virus and Cucumber mosaic virus had frequencies of 8% and 2%, respectively. Additionally, we characterized an isolate of CymMV, CymMV-GW, using biological tests and examined the nucleotide sequence properties of its complete genome. CymMV-GW induced chlorotic ringspots and chlorotic spot symptoms in inoculated leaves of Chenopodium amaranticolor and Nicotiana benthamiana, respectively. In this study, we have for the first complete genome sequence of CymMV-GW in Korea. The CymMV-GW genome was 6,225 nucleotides in length, excluding the poly-(A) tail, and showed whole-genome nucleotide and amino acid sequence identities of 97.7% and 100%, respectively, with the NJ-1 isolate of CymMV. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of the CymMV-GW isolate and viral infection rates for Calanthe spp. in Korea.

In 2010, foliar symptoms were observed in the paprika leaves in Jinju city, Korea. Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) was identified in paprika by using the large-scale oligonucleotide chip assay. To investigate the occurrence of BWYV, a survey was performed on various crops, including paprika, from 2011 to 2014. Further, the presence of BWYV was consistently verified through literature survey from 2015 to 2017. BWYV infection has been identified in Solanaceae crops (bell pepper, hot pepper, and paprika), various weeds, and green peach aphids and it occurs on a nationwide scale. Cultivation using organic methods involved natural enemies and showed a high BWYV infection rate, which was more than that for conventional cultivation methods in greenhouse. The complete genome sequence of BWYV isolated from paprika was determined for the first time. The genome of the BWYV-Korea isolate consists of 5750 nucleotides and has six open reading frames. Sequence identity results showed maximum similarity between the BWYV-Korea isolate and the BWYV LS isolate (identity > 90%). This study is the first report of BWYV infecting paprika in Korea. The survey revealed that BWYV is naturalized in the domestic ecology of Korea.
