Serveral physiological characterstics of sulfuroxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus thiooxidans and T. concretivorus are described. 1) Effect of pH on inhibitory function of pyruvate. The rate of oxygen uptake was reduced in accordance with decrease of pH. And on the other hand inhibition rate of pyruvate was more severe in lower pH than in higher pH. High concentration of hydrogen ion seemed to accelerate inhibitory function of pyruvate. Limiting concentration of pyruvate which absolutely inhibit oxygen uptake was lowered with time. In O time, 10^-2M of pyruvate absolutely inhibited oxygen uptake in pH 5. After 24 hours limiting concentration was lowered to 10^-3M. 2) Effect of organic compounds on the oxygen uptake of T. concretivorns. Effect of glucose, fructose, xylose, glutamate, succinate, malate, glycine, lactate, acetate, pyruvate, citrate, formate, and cisaconitate on thiosulfate oxidation and availability of these compounds as sloe source of energy by T. concretivorus were observed. A 0.5% concentration of malate and glycine accelerated thiosulfate oxidation almost react somewhat inhibitory. Pyruvate and citrate inhibited thiosulfate oxidation. In thiosulfatefree medium, organic compounds except formate and pyruvate affected no significant influences on oxygen uptake. 3) Enzyme assay. Of enzymes concerned TCA cycle and glycolysis, T. concretivorus had most of those enzyme activities even though they were low. Activities of hexokinase and succinic dehydrogenase were somewhat high and that of aconitase was very low on the contrary. 4) Optimum condition of mass culture of sulfur oxidizing bacteria. In a large jar fermenter opimum conditions including agitations speed, volume of supplying gases, and constitution rate of oxygen and carbon dioxide, etc. were experimented. The sulfuroxidier, T. thiooxidans was grown most effectively under the condition of automatically controlled pH of 1.0, and with the aeration of oxygen and carbon dioxide mixture (5 : 1) at the flow rate of 0.05 vvm, and at the agitation velocity of 200 rpm in this laboratory scale fermenter.

The round-trip losses of CO_2 laser wavelength in a hollow rectangular dielectric waveguide with external spherical mirrors are calculated. The propagative attenuations of some higher order modes with different polarization are analyzed as well as EH_11 fundamental mode. Computations of the losses in coupling radiation of various modes from the guide into free space and back into the guide, as a function of mirror curvature and position, are also presented. The overall return losses of various modes are the sum of the two kinds of losses.

<P>Immunization of dendritic cells (DC) pulsed with tumor antigen can activate tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) which are responsible for protection from tumor challenge and regression of established metastatic tumor. It has been hypothesized that tumor lysate contains factors that may modulate DC maturation. In this study, we examined whether the uptake of tumor lysate (MCA-102 fibrosarcoma) could modulate DC phenotypes in vitro and whether the administration in vivo of tumor lysate-pulsed DC (TP-DC) could elicit efficient tumor specific immune responses followed by a regression of established tumor burdens. It was investigated the uptake of tumor lysate by DC by means of flow cytometry and fluorescent microscope. Murine bone marrow-derived DC efficiently phagocytosed tumor lysate and after the uptake, the phenotype of TP-DC was surprisingly comparable to unpulsed-DC (UP-DC), exhibiting lower levels of CD80 (<51%), CD86 (<43%), and MHC class II (<59%). Also, TP-DC did not enhance secretion of IL-12p70 (UP- vs. TP; 54.5+/-6.4 vs. 50.5+/-4.8 pg/ml, respectively), contrary to those activated with LPS (113.6+/-16.8 pg/ml). However, TP-DC vaccination in vivo increased the IFN-gamma production from splenocytes higher than that of UP-DC (TP- vs. UP-DC; 41029+/-1523 vs. 4752+/-590 pg/ml, respectively). Furthermore, the administration of TP-DC enhanced specific T cell responses against MCA-102 fibrosarcoma. These results demonstrate that augmentation of DC phenotype and function in vitro is not necessarily a prerequisite for TP-DC vaccination to successfully promote anti-tumor immunity in vivo.</P>
Need for applying high index of suspicion in daily practice: four cases of tinea incognito

Tinea incognito is dermatophyte infection of the skin with an atypical appearance. In many cases, there are previous treatments-tend to be improper-with immunosuppressive agents such as steroids or calcineurin inhibitors. As the fungus-induced local inflammation is suppressed, it may show a modification of typical manifestations, presenting various morphologies. Patient 1 was a 66-year-old man presenting erythematous macules, papules with scanty scales on face and neck. He had applied topical steroids for previous 4 months. Patient 2, 37-year-old man visited for mild tender, itchy erythematous bullous oozing patches on left great toe area about a year ago. The lesion was thought to be kind of contact dermatitis with secondary infection. Despite of continuous treatment, the lesion kept worsening. Patient 3 was a 39-year-old woman with underlying psoriasis. Her psoriasis was generally stable but scaly erythematous patch on left post-auricle was the only lesion goes worsening. Patient 4, 23-year-old man with atopic dermatitis presented for uncontrolled itchy xerotic patches on whole body. All of above cases revealed positive findings on serial KOH test and were successfully treated by antifungal therapies. The entity of tinea incognito can mimic many other cutaneous disorders.
