Olibanum (<i>Boswellia serrata</i>) has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and anti- cancer effects. This study determined the role of a water extract of olibanum in platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-stimulated proliferation and migration of rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs). PDGF-BB induced the migration and proliferation of RASMCs that were inhibited by olibanum extract in a dose-dependent manner. The PDGF-BB-increased phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK); the heat shock protein (Hsp) 27 was significantly inhibited by the olibanum extract. The effects of PDGF-BB-induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 was not altered by the olibanum extract. Treatment with olibanum extract inhibited PDGF-BB-stimulated sprout out growth of aortic rings. These results suggest that the water extract of olibanum inhibits PDGF-BB-stimulated migration and proliferation in RASMCs as well as sprout out growth, which may be mediated by the inhibition of the p38 MAPK and Hsp27 pathways.
Should anticoagulants be administered for portal vein thrombosis associated with acute pancreatitis?

<P>Venous complications in patients with acute pancreatitis typically occur as a form of splenic, portal, or superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and have been detected more frequently in recent reports. Although a well-organized protocol for the treatment of venous thrombosis has not been established, anticoagulation therapy is commonly recommended. A 73-year-old man was diagnosed with acute progressive portal vein thrombosis associated with acute pancreatitis. After one month of anticoagulation therapy, the patient developed severe hematemesis. With endoscopy and an abdominal computed tomography scan, hemorrhages in the pancreatic pseudocyst, which was ruptured into the duodenal bulb, were confirmed. After conservative treatment, the patient was stabilized. While the rupture of a pseudocyst into the surrounding viscera is a well-known phenomenon, spontaneous rupture into the duodenum is rare. Moreover, no reports of upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by pseudocyst rupture in patients under anticoagulation therapy for venous thrombosis associated with acute pancreatitis have been published. Herein, we report a unique case of massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to pancreatic pseudocyst rupture into the duodenum, which developed during anticoagulation therapy for portal vein thrombosis associated with acute pancreatitis.</P>

<P>Adsorption characteristics of potentially toxic metals in single-and multi-metal forms onto ferronickel slag were evaluated. Competitive sorption of metals by ferronickel slag has never been reported previously. The maximum adsorption capacities of toxic metals on ferronickel were in the order of Cd (10.2 mg g(-1)) > Cu (8.4 mg g(-1)) > Zn (4.4 mg g(-1)) in the single-metal adsorption isotherm and Cu (6.1 mg g(-1)) >> Cd (2.3 mg g(-1)) > Zn (0.3 mg g(-1)) in the multi-metal adsorption isotherm. In comparison with single-metal adsorption isotherm, the reduction rates of maximum toxic metal adsorption capacity in the multi-metal adsorption isotherm were in the following order of Zn (93%) > Cd (78%) >> Cu (27%). The Freundlich isotherm provides a slightly better fit than the Langmuir isotherm equation using ferronickel slag for potentially toxic metal adsorption. Multi-metal adsorption behaviors differed from single-metal adsorption due to competition, based on data obtained from Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models and three-dimensional simulation. Especially, Cd and Zn were easily exchanged and substituted by Cu during multi-metal adsorption. Further competitive adsorption studies are necessary in order to accurately estimate adsorption capacity of ferronickel slag for potentially toxic metals in natural environments.</P>
Application of Modified Grid-Based Approach for Auto Mesh Generation of IT-Related Products

<P>A seamless analysis of IT-related products, such as cellular phone, LCD monitor and note PC etc., which are thin and complex geometry is one of great concerns in product design. However, there is a considerable amount of gap between the industrial application and fundamental academic studies due to a time consuming detailed mesh generation. In order to settle the bottleneck, an auto mesh generation program based on a modified grid-based approach is proposed in this paper. At first, base mesh and skin mesh were generated using informations on entities which extracted from an IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) file. Secondly, a provisional core mesh with a rough boundary geometry was constructed by superimposing the skin mesh into the base mesh generated from CAD model. And then, positions of boundary nodes were redistributed to delineate exact geometry of the provisional mesh. Finally, good qualified meshes were constructed by moving the positions of the nodes and splitting elements along boundary edges. In conclusion, it is anticipated that the developed program can be used as a promising pre-processor for static or dynamic analysis of various IT-related products.</P>

연부조직에 발생하는 단발성 아밀로이드종은 매우 드물다. 저자들은 경골 근위부 골절 후 20여년 뒤에 전경골근에서 발생한 염증을 동반한 석회화성 아밀로이드종 1예를 경험하였으며, 종양 제거술 후 재발없이 만족스런 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 아밀로이드종은 매우 드물기도 하고 골수염이나 골종양과 구분이 어려웠던 경우이므로 문헌고찰과 함께 증례보고를 하는 바이다. Calcific amyloidoma of the soft tissue is quite rare and it is difficult to make a differential diagnosis from other lesions such as osteomyelitis or bone tumor. We encountered a case of a calcified amyloidoma found in the anterior tibial muscle that occurred more than 20 years after a proximal tibial fracture adjacent to the origin of the muscle. The features of the lesion resembled osteomyelitis. Satisfactory result was obtained by a thorough mass excision. We report this case with review of the relevant literature.
Liquid Crystalline Properties of Dimers Having o-, m- and p- Positional Molecular Structures

With the objective to design and synthesis of Schiff's base symmetrical liquid crystal dimmers and to study the effect of molecular structure variation ($o-ortho$, $m-meta$, $p-para$) and change in alkoxy terminal chain length on mesomorphic properties of liquid crystals, We have synthesized Schiff base dimers from dialdehyde derivative containing 2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxypropylene as short spacer with aniline derivatives having different lengths of terminal alkoxy chains ($n$ = 5, 7, 9). The chemical structure of the final products was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ($^1H$ NMR) spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties and optical textures of the resultant dimers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The existence of smectic A phase transition was confirmed by the observation of batonnets and fan shaped textures in optical microscopy when compound were heated from crystalline phase. All of the dimers of this series, with the exception of $\mathbf{2S_5}$ -ortho, -meta, -para, were thermotropic liquid crystal. The compound $\mathbf{2S_9}$ -meta was monotropic, while the rest were enantiotropic. It was found that the change in terminal alkoxy chain length has pronounced effect on the mesomorphic properties. The temperature range of smectic A phase window widens with increasing alkoxy chain length.
