The use of artificial intelligence (AI) service robots is on the rise. With service frontlines gradually shifting to human–robot interactions, the question of whether AI robots should be humanlike or machinelike has emerged. While many firms use robots that resemble humans in their appearance and actions, others use machinelike robots, assuming that very humanlike robots may lead to uncanny valley effects. There is no consensus on whether the anthropomorphism of service robots facilitates or constrains consumers’ experiences. To fill this gap, this article examines when and how service companies should use anthropomorphic AI service robots.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A titanium-doped Ce<SUB>0.8</SUB>Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>1.9</SUB> composite is developed as an anode component of low temperature solid oxide fuel cells running on methane fuel. Crystallographic parameters of (Ce<SUB>0.8-x</SUB>Ti<SUB>x</SUB>)Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> (0.00 < x < 0.10) are investigated with respect to the amount of titanium. The composites show a single cubic phase with the titanium amount being in the range of 0.00–0.07, while the lattice parameters decrease with increasing titanium content. The (Ce<SUB>0.8-x</SUB>Ti<SUB>x</SUB>)Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> composites are applied to an anode-supported single cell consisting of Ni-(Ce<SUB>0.8-x</SUB>Ti<SUB>x</SUB>)Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> anode/Ce<SUB>0.8</SUB>Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>1.9</SUB> electrolyte/La<SUB>0.6</SUB>Sr<SUB>0.4</SUB>Co<SUB>0.2</SUB>Fe<SUB>0.8</SUB>O<SUB>3-δ</SUB> cathode. Catalytic properties of Ni-(Ce<SUB>0.8-x</SUB>Ti<SUB>x</SUB>)Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> are inspected with the electrochemical performance and performance stability of the cells in dry methane fuel. The cell with Ni-(Ce<SUB>0.73</SUB>Ti<SUB>0.07</SUB>)Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> (x = 0.07) anode displays a low polarization resistance and an optimum maximum power density (679 mW cm<SUP>−2</SUP> at 600 °C). A performance stability investigation indicates that the cell exhibits a fairly low degradation rate of 3 mV h<SUP>−1</SUP> during a 31 h operation in dry methane. Vibratory characteristics of cracked non-uniform beams with different boundary conditions

Non-uniform beams with bending moment of inertia and mass per unit length varying as I(x) = α 1 (1+βx) λ+4 and m(x) = α 2 (1+βx) λ are widely used in various engineering fields, such as the civil and mechanical engineering etc. This paper presents an exact method to investigate the free vibration of cracked non-uniform beams with different conditions. Firstly, the closed form solution for the mode shape functions of the non-uniform beam is obtained based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Secondly, the beam is divided into several segments according to the different variable form, and each segment is further divided into many sub-segments by cracks. Four undetermined coefficients could represent the mode shape function of each sub-segment by simulating crack with the massless rotational spring. The undetermined transfer relationship in the same segment is obtained based on the principle of the transfer matrix method. The fourorder undetermined coefficient matrix is obtained by using continuity and equilibrium conditions between adjacent segments, and then the characteristic equation of the entire cracked beam is obtained after that. Finally, the results obtained from the finite element method and published papers are used to validate the correctness and reliability of the proposed method. The influences of crack depth, location and boundary conditions on natural frequencies of cracked non-uniform beams are discussed.
Effect of temperature and spring-mass systems on modal properties of Timoshenko concrete beam

An exact solution for the title problem was obtained in closed-form fashion considering general boundary conditions. The expressions of moment, shear and shear coefficient (or shear factor) of cross section under the effect of arbitrary temperature distribution were first derived. In view of these relationships, the differential equations of Timoshenko beam under the effect of temperature were obtained and solved. Second, the characteristic equations of Timoshenko beam carrying several spring-mass systems under the effect of temperature were derived based on the continuity and force equilibrium conditions at attaching points. Then, the correctness of proposed method was demonstrated by a Timoshenko laboratory beam and several finite element models. Finally, the influence law of different temperature distribution modes and parameters of spring-mass system on the modal characteristics of Timoshenko beam had been studied, respectively.
THE EFFECT OF ANTHROPOMORPHIC BRAND ROLES AND IMPLICIT THEORIES ON CONSUMER RESPONSES

Recently, brand managers have widely adopted brand anthropomorphism as positioning strategies to differentiate from other competitors. Aggarwal and McGill (2012) anthropomorphized brand as two specific roles. Brand-as-partner refers its role as “the co-producer of benefits”, a relationship in which the brand and consumers work together to co-create the benefits as equals. However, brand-as-servant represents its role as “the outsourced provider of benefits”, a hierarchical relationship in which the brand works for consumers to create benefits. Our research extends prior literature by investigating how a brand can improve consumers’ responses with the anthropomorphization of being either a collaborative partner or a supportive servant, depending on consumer’s mind-set ? aptly termed implicit theories. Implicit theories are the beliefs that people have about the nature of human characteristics. In specific, entity theorists believe human traits are relatively fixed and stable; and incremental theorists believe human traits are substantially changeable (Dweck & Leggett, 1988). These two implicit theories trigger many distinctive cognitive and behavioral patterns. For example, entity theorists prefer effortless success and receiving assurances to signal their abilities. In contrast, incremental theories emphasize on self-improvement through high effort to realize their self-enhancement and intentions (Park & John, 2014). We generalize this theory to anthropomorphic brand positioning and adopt consumer’s efficacy (confidence) to explain the underlying mechanism. We hypothesize a servant brand is more appealing to entity theorists, because they prefer situations in which they are guaranteed of being satisfied effortlessly (Dweck & Leggett, 1988). Therefore, they are more confident about their abilities when a servant brand acts as an assurance for providing benefits. In contrast, a partner brand may be more attractive to incremental theorists, because they believe their abilities can be improved through working with the partner brand. Thus, they should be more self-assured about their abilities, and increase their perceived efficacy to realize their intentions. Three studies were conducted to test the hypotheses by both manipulating and measuring implicit theories. The consistent results revealed the significant interactions between brand roles and implicit theories on brand evaluation as well as the mediation effect of consumer efficacy. In sum, this research contributes to brand managers by advising them to cultivate appropriate brand role position in accordance with the target and potential consumer’s distinct mind-set.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) plays an important role in angiogenesis. However, the underlying mechanisms are not clear. Mg2+ is the most abundant intracellular divalent cation in the body and plays critical roles in many cell functions. We investigated the effect of bFGF on the intracellular Mg2+ concentration ([Mg2+]i) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). bFGF increased [Mg2+]i in a dose-dependent manner, independent of extracellular Mg2+. This bFGF-induced [Mg2+]i increase was blocked by tyrosine kinase inhibitors (tyrphostin A-23 and genistein), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors (wortmannin and LY294002) and a phospholipase Cγ (PLCγ) inhibitor (U73122). In contrast, mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitors (SB202190 and PD98059) did not affect the bFGF-induced [Mg2+]i increase. These results suggest that bFGF increases the [Mg2+]i from the intracellular Mg2+ stores through the tyrosine kinase/PI3K/PLCγ- dependent signaling pathways.

<P>A facile strategy has been demonstrated for the selective synthesis of highly stereoregular polyesters with <I>cis</I>-2,3-(<I>exo</I>,<I> exo</I>) or <I>trans</I>-2,3-(<I>exo</I>,<I> endo</I>) repeating units by the organocatalysts mediated alternating copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and norbornene anhydride (NA) stereoisomers. The geometrical structure of polyester can be tuned simply by modulating the type of NA isomers (<I>endo</I>- or <I>exo</I>-NA), monomer feed ratio, and reaction temperature. The <I>cis</I>- (>99%) and <I>trans</I>-polyesters (>99%) exhibit high glass transition temperature up to 129.8 and 115.9 °C, respectively.
