<P>We report a series of cobalt complexes with various polypyridyl ligands, where the oxidation potential is tuned from 0.17 to 0.34 V <I>vs.</I> ferrocene. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) of the cobalt complexes were stabilized by adding electron acceptor groups on pyridyl or replacing pyridyl by pyrazole. These complexes are then used as one-electron redox mediators in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) together with polymer based cathode resulting in an excellent performance. The performance of DSSCs using the molecularly engineered cobalt redox shuttle and poly(3,4-alkylthiophenes) based cathode is better than the triiodide/iodide redox shuttle with platinized cathode. The use of high surface area poly(3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) based nanoporous layers allows higher catalytic activity thus minimizing the electrode–electrolyte interface issues.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Molecularly engineered cobalt redox shuttles with tunable oxidation potential, when employed with polymer cathode are new work horse for DSSCs. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2cp41611e'> </P>

The Japan Medical Association, a lobby of physicians, went on strike in July 1971 because of the medical reforms by the government. Although these physicians resigned as health insurance doctors, they continued to provide medical care and even health insurance treatment in some areas. This study uses the regional differences in resignation rates as a natural experiment to examine how the payment method of health insurance affects medical service utilization and health outcomes. Our estimation results indicate that if the participation rate of the strike increased by 1 percentage point and proxy claims were refused completely, the number of cases of insurance benefits and total amount of insurance benefits would decrease by 0.78% and 0.58%, respectively compared with the same month in the previous year. Moreover, the average amount of insurance benefits per claim increased since patients with relatively less serious diseases might have sought healthcare less often. Finally, our results suggest that the strike did not affect death rates in Japan.
S-RNase Genotypes of Wild Apples Necessary for Utilization as Pollinizers

We investigated S-RNase genotypes of 21 wild apples with Neville Corpman, and King of Tompkins 1, 2 and 3 by the PCR-digestion method. M. sylvestris 392390 (T1-2-66) did not contain any known S-RNase allele, and seemed to be useful as a pollinizer. Thirteen individuals (M. baccata (S1-7-15), M. fusca, M. fusca F 50 (T1-16-51), M. orientalis (W1- 11-13), M. pumila Mill, M. pumila Pendula var. elise rathka, M. prunifolia USSR 18, M. prunifolia USSR 24, M. prunifolia USSR P, M. sieversii, M. sieversii (W1-10-49), M. sieversii sdl.2250 and M. sylvestris) contained an unidentified S-RNase allele with a known allele. Although M. baccata 4433 (79091) contained two known alleles, the S16a does not frequently occur in domestic Japanese cultivars. These wild apples also could be useful as pollinizers of cultivars in Japan, except for cultivars having an identical S-RNase allele. We have selected M. baccata 4433 (79091) as a pollinizer for the cultivar ‘Fuji’.

An efficient molecular grafting approach is presented to improve interfacial adhesion of logic circuits byvirtue of the valuable molecules chemically linked to polymer surfaces. With spray-assisted layer-by-layer deposition, pure metallic Ag coatings with a thickness of 130 gm adhere well to the PET plastics andthe homogeneity of the Ag coatings has been studied. In particular, the peel broken site is estimatedinside polyester resin beneath the interface. The fabricatedflexible circuits maintain high conductivityunder various twisting conditions and bending tests, indicating the possibility of producing robustprinted circuits ontoflexible substrates.

We present a novel method of spin-spray for preparing Ag/CNTs compositefilms on photo-graftedpolyimide (PI) substrate, which is evolved from spin and spray method. Compared with the compositessynthesized of silver nanoparticles and CNTs, it reduced pores of silver matrix. Meanwhile, MWCNTs inAg/CNTsfilms show an outstanding deposition and dispersity. Owing to CNTs, the sheet resistance ofAg/CNT-5 declined by 74.4% compared to the pristine Agfilms. Adhesive strength was strong enough forpracticability by photo-grafting. Otherwise, environmental stability was carried out and the selectivecoatings for diverse inter-connection with various deformations supported the application practicability.

A ranula is a pseudocyst that originates from the sublingual gland after trauma. Acute cases of ranulas that progress rapidly and cause respiratory dis-tress are rare. Holoprosencephaly is a complex brain malformation caused by incomplete cleavage of the prosencephalon. Children with holoprosen-cephaly may experience upper airway obstruction due to the associated dentoalveolar malformations and oromotor dysfunctions. We present the case of an eight-year-old female patient with holoprosencephaly and a plunging ranula that manifested as an acute course due to difficult airway management. She required gastrostomy for oromotor dysfunctions related to feeding and swallowing and difficulty managing oral secretions. The sublingual gland and ranula were removed under general anesthesia. Postoperatively, urgent reintubation and close monitoring in the intensive care unit were required due to upper airway obstruction. We successfully managed the patient with close cooperation of a pediatrician and an anesthetist, and no recurrence was observed at the one-year follow-up. A ranula can be caused by trauma to the floor of the mouth in association with lingually inclined mandibular teeth, a type of dentoalveolar compensation seen in maxillary hypoplasia associated with holoprosencephaly. Careful consideration is needed in such cases since airway management can be difficult due to postoperative swelling and oromotor dysfunctions.
