      • Standardization of Broadcasting Language Practices for International Comparability and Applicability

Analiza Acuña-Villacorte ASCONS 2017 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EMERGING MULTIDISCIPLINAR Vol.1 No.1

The refinement of knowledge in broadcasting language requires a precise distinction between comparability and applicability. The similarities and differences in the language practices - the comparability, and the relevance of language practices- applicability, regulation of the process, and the impact of the attitude exhibited by the trainees in the workplace; are the main concerns of the language learning. This study hoped to standardize the broadcasting language practices of Bulacan State University (BSU) BA Broadcasting graduating students in the Philippines by determining the level of the international comparability and applicability of the attributes in broadcasting language.

Reticulated Vitreous Carbon Foams from Sucrose: Promising Materials for Bone Tissue Engineering Applications

        Natalia Terán Acuña,Viviana Güiza-Argüello,Elcy Córdoba-Tuta 한국고분자학회 2020 Macromolecular Research Vol.28 No.10

Reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) foams have shown favorable biocompatibility and the potential to support osteoblastic adhesion. In this work, RVC foams were fabricated via template route, using a low-cost sucrose-based resin. The effect of several process parameters, such as template porosity (cell size between 500 and 1400 μm) and carbonization conditions, were studied. The resulting RVC foams displayed highly interconnected porosity (˃ 85%) with controllable cell size, bone-like morphology, and compressive strength of 0.06-0.26 MPa. The results suggested that the decrease in the cell size of the sacrificial sponge, the increase in the thickness of the sponge cell ligaments, and the carbonization temperature of 1500 °C, contributed to the enhancement of the mechanical response of the fabricated scaffolds. Finally, cytotoxicity and cell adhesion assays were carried out using normal human osteoblasts as a preliminary assessment of the cytocompatibility of the synthesized RVC foams. Although the mechanical strength of these foams could still be improved, these results contribute towards the development of low-cost bioactive scaffolds that resemble the morphological properties of the trabecular bone.

Cell-to-cell Transmission of Polyglutamine Aggregates in C. elegans

        김동규,이승재,조규원,안우정,Dayana Perez-Acuña,정현수,이해진 한국뇌신경과학회 2017 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.26 No.6

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and cognitive dysfunction caused by expansion of polyglutamine (polyQ) repeat in exon 1 of huntingtin (HTT). In patients, the number of glutamine residues in polyQ tracts are over 35, and it is correlated with age of onset, severity, and disease progression. Expansion of polyQ increases the propensity for HTT protein aggregation, process known to be implicated in neurodegeneration. These pathological aggregates can be transmitted from neuron to another neuron, and this process may explain the pathological spreading of polyQ aggregates. Here, we developed an in vivo model for studying transmission of polyQ aggregates in a highly quantitative manner in real time. HTT exon 1 with expanded polyQ was fused with either N-terminal or C-terminal fragments of Venus fluorescence protein and expressed in pharyngeal muscles and associated neurons, respectively, of C. elegans. Transmission of polyQ proteins was detected using bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC). Mutant polyQ (Q97) was transmitted much more efficiently than wild type polyQ (Q25) and forms numerous inclusion bodies as well. The transmission of Q97 was gradually increased with aging of animal. The animals with polyQ transmission exhibited degenerative phenotypes, such as nerve degeneration, impaired pharyngeal pumping behavior, and reduced life span. The C. elegans model presented here would be a useful in vivo model system for the study of polyQ aggregate propagation and might be applied to the screening of genetic and chemical modifiers of the propagation.

Analysis of the phase transformation of aluminum formate Al(O2CH)3 to α-alumina by Raman and infrared spectroscopy

Simón Yobanny Reyes López,Rosa Saucedo Acuña,Rigoberto López-Juárez,Juan Serrato Rodríguez 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2013 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.14 No.5

A new simplified route to prepare crystalline α-alumina powders is proposed from the decomposition of aluminum formate Al(O2CH)3 precursor following a process of gelation of Al(O2CH)3 in an aqueous medium. Heat treated powders were characterized by XRD, Raman and infrared spectroscopy showing the presence of η-Al2O3 at 1000 o C and the transformation to α-Al2O3 at 1100 o C, where SEM images of α-Al2O3 reveled an size of 1-2 μm by the aggregated particles, and TEM images confirm a particles size of 200-300 nm. By other hand BET study showed that the specific surface area of η-Al2O3 and the α- Al2O3 obtained is higher than the specific surface area reported for these materials (until 118 m2 /g), ratify that this new route process at low temperature promote to obtain the powers with an excellent superficial area.

Modeling α-synuclein propagation with Preformed Fibril Injection

        정현경,Hoang-Anh Ho,Dayana Perez-Acuña,이승재 대한파킨슨병및이상운동질환학회 2019 Journal Of Movement Disorders Vol.12 No.3

The aggregation of α-synuclein (α-syn) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson’s disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Postmortem analyses of α-syn pathology, especially that of PD, have suggested that aggregates progressively spread from a few discrete locations to wider brain regions. The neuron-to-neuron propagation of α-syn has been suggested to be the underlying mechanism by which aggregates spread throughout the brain. Many cellular and animal models has been created to study cell-to-cell propagation. Recently, it has been shown that a single injection of preformed fibrils (PFFs) made of recombinant α-syn proteins into various tissues and organs of many different animal species results in widespread α-syn pathology in the central nervous system (CNS). These PFF models have been extensively used to study the mechanism by which aggregates spread throughout the brain. Here, we review what we have learned from PFF models, describe the nature of PFFs and the neuropathological features, neurophysiological characteristics, and behavioral outcomes of the models.

Modeling α-synuclein propagation with Preformed Fibril Injections

        Hyun Kyung Chung,Hoang-Anh Ho,Dayana Pérez-Acuña,Seung-Jae Lee 대한파킨슨병및이상운동질환학회 2020 Journal Of Movement Disorders Vol.13 No.1

In the original version of Table 1 associated with the review article “Modeling α-Synuclein Propagation with Preformed Fibril Injections”, the “amount of PFF injected” for the Rey et al. 2018 paper should be “0.8 μg of 5 mg/ml” instead of “8 μg 1 mg/ml”.

      • Democracy and the Human Development Sequence

Jairo Acuñ,a–,Alfaro 연세대학교 빈곤문제국제개발연구원 2012 Journal of Poverty Alleviation and International D Vol.3 No.2

This paper provides a parsimonious empirical test of the relationship between democracy and HD, using time-series cross-sectional data on 164 countries from 1972 to 2002. The paper specifies a similar partial model to those found in the global comparative literature on democracy and development in an effort to replicate earlier findings and advance the proposition that there are strong reciprocal connections between HD and democratization that form two chains which reinforce one another cumulatively over time. The statistical analysis aims to show that the causal relationship forms two chains that run in both directions. This gives rise to virtuous and vicious circles, with good or bad performance on human development and democracy reinforcing each other. Cross-country partial regressions show a significant relationship in both directions. Yet evidence over time has strong sequential implications, and where a choice is necessary, democracy should be given sequencing priority over HD and economic growth, respectively. The discussion is relevant in lieu of ongoing debates about post 2015 Millennium Development Goals in regards to governance and democratization.
