We demonstrate the blue InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an embedded air-gap photonic crystal (PC) which was fabricated by the lateral epitaxial overgrowth of GaN layer on the tungsten (W) nano-masks. The periodic air-gap PC was formed by the chemical reaction of hydrogen with GaN on the W nano-mask. The optical output power of LEDs with an air-gap PC was increased by 26% compared to LEDs without an air-gap PC. The enhanced optical output power was attributed to the improvement in internal quantum efficiency and light extraction efficiency by the air-gap PC embedded in GaN layer.
Helicobacter pylori 감염에 대한 Hp Kit 검사의 진단적 유용성

Background/Aims: Rapid urease tests are used commonly for the detection of H. pylori. These tests are inexpensive and can be done easily and rapidly in the endoscopy room. A new rapid urease test, Hp Kit test, was developed for the first time in Korea. The test kit has two wells for two biopsies taken from each gastric antrum and corpus. We performed this study to estimate the diagnostic usefulness of Hp Kit test for the detection of H. pylori. Methods: In one hundred patients undergoing gastroscopy, biopsy specimens were taken for Hp Kit test, polymerase chain reaction, culture, and histologic examination (Warthin-Starry stain). The $quot;C-urea breath test was also performed. The results of Hp Kit test were read after 2 hours. Results: The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of Hp Kit test to diagnose H. pylori infection were 90.0%, 97.5%, 98.2%, and 86,7%, respectively. The positive reactions in only one well were observed in 12.9% of true positives with Hp Kit test, The reaction times of the Hp Kit test were 35.2±21.4, 26.6±15.3, and 17.8±15.8 minutes (mean±S.D.) at grade 1, 2, and 3, respectively (r=-0.3, p$lt;0.05), therefore the results were usually observed within 1 hour. Conclusions: Hp Kit test has a high sensitivity and specificity, and may be used as an alternative rapid urease test to diagnose K. pylori infection.
Massilia varians Isolated from a Clinical Specimen

We report a case of Massilia varians isolated from a deep finger wound following orthopedic surgery on an immunocompetent patient. The bacterium was identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. This is the first case of M. varians isolated from a clinical specimen since the first report in 2008.

Background: Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is one of the major treatments for correcting anemia, but its use should be carefully considered because of adverse transfusion reactions and inappropriate usage. Therefore, individual health care facilities have self evaluated their use of transfusion in an attempt to decrease unnecessary procedures. In this study, we evaluated the differences in the minimum hemoglobin (Hb) trigger for RBC transfusion among clinical departments in Severance Hospital. Methods: We analyzed the electronic medical records of RBC transfusion episodes that were conducted at a Hb level above 8 g/dL from July 2014 to September 2015. We classified these data by clinical department, and considered the overall medical conditions of the patients. The minimum Hb trigger level in this study was defined as the lowest Hb level within 24 hours prior to RBC transfusion. Results: A total of 4,953 RBC transfusion episodes that were conducted at Hb levels above 8 g/dL were analyzed over that period. In general, the minimum Hb trigger level was higher in the operation group than the hemorrhage group. When compared among clinical departments, the department of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, and anesthesiology showed high levels of minimum Hb trigger equal to or greater than 10 g/dL. Conclusion: The minimum Hb trigger level differed among clinical departments, with the operation group showing a much higher level of minimum Hb trigger. We hope that these data will be practically applied to establish plans and strategies for managing the appropriateness of RBC transfusions in Korea. In addition, continuous evaluation and transfusion education for clinical departments should be performed.
