The reproducive status and disorders of 200 heads of Cheju Ponies and 115 heads of horses raised on Cheju island was investigated to improve the reproductive efficiency and to get fundamental data for Cheju pony mares and hores The results are as follows : 1. The average ages of Cheju pony at the first estrus was 14.1±1.5 months while horse was 13.05 1.2 months. About one month was delayed for the pony. 2. The average estnis cycle of Cheju pony was 21.5±2.7 days shile horse was 22.2±6.2 days. 3. The average gestation period of Cheju pony was 335.7±8.2 days while horse was 337±7.3 days. The parturition rate of Cheju pony was 69.0% while horse was 64.1%. 4. The reoccurrence of estrus of Cheju pony afbr foaling was 20.3±16.2 days while horse was 16.1±12.0 days. 5. In the reproductive disorders ovarian diseases were 93.3% and 75% for Cheju pony and horse, respectively. Both of Cheju ponies and horses were 33.3% in C. L persistent and 22.2% in ovarian dysgunction and cyst. 6. The delivery disorde were 6.7% and 9.0% for Cheju pony and horse, respectively. The pony showed 3.7% of the single abortion while the horse was 5.0% of the twin abortion in their gestation condi-tions.
혈중 Progesterone 수준 측정에 의한 제주재래마의 조기 임신진단 응용에 관한 연구

Plasma progesterone concentrations were measured by using radjoimmunoassay for early diagnosis of pregnancy in Cheju-native mares. A total of 226 pony mares were examined for pregnancy during breeding and non breeding seasons. Plasma progesterone levels 20~23 days after the onset of oestrus were 4.67+O.67ng /rnl and O.55+O.O4ng /ml for mares becornrning pregnant and not pregnant after the estrus, respectively, and there was a significant differences (p<0.01) between the two groups. Progesterone concentration of pregnant mares gradually increased in 30 days andreached a peak (10.3ng /ml) during the third month of gestation. However, the concentration decresed to the base line (1.llng /rnl) at 7 months and gradually increased again as foaling approached (2.lng /ml). Early diagnosis for pregnancy of Cheju mares by progesterone level at 20~23 days after onset of oestrus was 88% accurate when 4.6ng /ml was used to classify mares as pregnancy and below 1.3ng /rnl was used to determine nonpregnant mares. However, the accuracy of the diagnosis was improved to 96% when a progesterone level of above 2ng /mi was used to classify mares for pregnancy. Diagnosis for pregnancy was 69.6% accurate when mares were classified as pregnancy by horse owners during breeding season. The progesterone levels of pregnant and non-pregnant mares during non-breeding season varied greatly between individual animals, Plasma progesterone levels of pregnant animals ranged from 3.5ng /mi to above 6.2ng /mi whereas similar values were observed in non-pregnant animals. Radioirnrnunoassay technicjues can be applied for the early pregnant diagnosis of Cheju native mares when progesterone levels are measured during the early gestation period (18~23 days after onset of oestrus). However, progesterone concentration of mares in non-breeding season is conisidered unsuitable as a indicator of pregnant diagnosis.

This study was conducted to investigate the anatomical and physiological structures of ovaries in the imported Holstein of Jeju island, total 108 heads of Holstein were participated in this study and the results are summarized as follow: 1. The average weight of left and right ovary is 4.2g and 4.5g in anestrus heifers, 5.4g and 6.0g in anestrus cows and 7.4g and 8.1g in normal cows, respectively. 2. The size of corpus luteum which was projected on surface of ovary in sterile heifer and normal cow is the largest at 11 to 15 days after the occurrence of estrus with length of 1.29㎝ and then was retrograded. 3. Corpus luteum verum during pregnancy weighs 4.73g in the early stage 4.40g in the mid stage, and 3.13g in the late stage, indicate that the most heavy weight was in three months after pregnancy (5.73g) and then the weight gradually reduced. 4. There was no relationship number and size of follicle on the surface of overay between pregnant-period and parturition, but, number and size of developing follicle increases to up to 6 months after pregnancy.

This study was conducted to investigate corpus luteum`s responses and rate of conception following Lutalyse (PGF 2lk) administration and manual rupture of peristent corpus luteum in anestrus Holstein cows. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Lutalyse (PGF 2α) treatment for persistent corpus luteum showed better results in occurance of estrus, and rate of conception than those of manual ruptured. 2. Regressing of corpus luteum based on rectal palpation after Lutalyse administration showed within 24 hours in case of persistent corpus luteum, but after 48 hours in case of corpus luteum vevum. 3. Subcutaneous administration of Lutalyse showed better results in days upto estrus occurrence, percentage of estrus and conception rate than those of intramuscalar and vulvosubcutaneous administration.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of PMSG, HCG or PMSG + HCG treatment on ovarian responses and fertility in 50 imported Holstein with ovarian hypoplasia symptom. The results were as follow; 1. Number of Holstein showed the first estrus after gonadotropin treatment was 14 (70%) out of 20 heads in PMSG (1,000IU) Treatment, 2(20%) out of 10 heads in HCG (2,000IU) treatment, and 16(8%) out of 20 heads in PMS + HCG Treatment, respectively. 2. The ovarian hypoplasia heifers treated with PMSG + HCG was superior to the other treatments in percentage of normal estrus, number of developing follicle, percentage of ovulation, and rate of conception. 3. The calving rate and multiple birth rate following PMSG + HCG treatment in anestrus heifers was 123% and 15.3% respectively.

Plasma progesterone concentrations were measured from 97 Che-ju native mares throughout the estrous cycle, Day 20 to 23, 5 to7 months of pregnancy, and gestation period (<1 to 7 months) using the radioimmunoassay techniques for pregnancy diagnosis. Plasma progesterone concentrations during the estrous cycle were the lowest (<1.0ng/ml) at estrus, remained high from 9 to 18 days (3.7~7.6ng/ml) and drastically decreased thereafter to reach minimal concentrations at the next estrus. Plasma progesterone concentrations at Day 21 to 24 were a significantly different between in pregnant mares (>5.7ng/ml) and in non-pregnant mares (<1.0ng/ml). The accuracy of the pregnancy diagnosis based on plasma progesterone concentrations at Day 20 to 23 was 86.7% for positive and 100% for negative, whereas on 5 to 7 months was 66.7% for positive and 71.0% for negative, respectively. Plasma progesterone concentrations during the gestation period(1 to 7 months) increased after 1 month of pregnancy, with peak concentrations(>8.0ng/ml) occurring between 60 to 100 days of pregnancy, and decreased below 1.7ng/ml after 6 months of pregnancy.

The effects of $PGF2{\alpha}$ on the conception rate and the plasma levels of estradiol-$17{\beta}$ and progesterone of anestrus Cheju mares were investigated at the breeding and non-breeding seasons. The results obtained from this studies are as follows; 1. The durations of the estrus and diestrus after $PGF_2{\alpha}$ treatment persisted shorter than control cycle (p<0.05), but ovulation time was fast. 2. The levels of estradiol-$17{\beta}$ and progesteron before $PGF_2{\alpha}$ treatment showed 103.8pg/ml, 8.0ng/ml in breeding season and 72.8pg/ml, 4.7ng/ml in non-breeding season, respectively. 3. The levels of estradiol-$17{\beta}$ rose to 115.4~154.0pg/ml, and 90.8~27.0pg/ml from 2nd to 6th day after the treatment of $PGF_2{\alpha}$, in breeding and non-breeding seasons, respectively, while progesterone level dropped to 1ng/ml with the sign of estrus and at 8th day rose in breeding season (p<0.05). 4. Of thirty anestrus mares investigated for $PGF_2{\alpha}$ administration, 87.5% showed estrus on an average of 3.8 days after treatment and the conception rate was 62.5% in breeding season, but the estrus and conception rates dropped 40% and 20% in non-breeding season, respectively.
濟州道의 導入牛에 있어서 고사리 中毒의 發生 狀況 및 그 對策에 對한 調査 硏究

The authors investigated the status of an outbreak of bracken poisoning, and counter-measures, among recently introduced cattle (from Nov., 1976 to Oct., 1979) belonging to 19 ranches on Jeju Island. 1. 364 head of a total of 2396 head (Aberdeen Angus 948, Brahman 188, santa 231, Shorthorn 334, Simmental 26, Hereford 101, Holstein 568) showed the symptoms of bracken poisoning, and 159 head died between May, 1979 and Oct., 1980. 2. It was recognized that Holstein, Shorthorn, Angus were sensitive, and Brahman, Santa, Here ford were resistant to the bracken toxicity. 3. As counter-measures against bracken poisoning, 1) pasture improvement and it's reasonable management, 2) optimal time (October-November) for introducing the cattle, 3) proper calf management, and 4) the early diagnosis of bracken poisoning were suggested.

This study was conducted to find out the changes of estradion- 17β and progesterone levels in the plasma of Cheju mares during gestation period and before and after parturition with 12 heads of Cheju ponies. The results are as follows ; 1. The estradiol- 17β and progesterone levels on the 1-4 months showed 61.6-134.2 pg/ml and 7.74-9.20 ng/ml respectively, but the estradiol- 17β levels rapidly increased to 426.4- 1772.9 pg/ml, and the progesterone levels decreased to 1.42 - 5.43 ng/ml on the 5- 10 months of gestation period. 2. The progesterone levels of the pragnant and the non-pregnant mares showed 4.80 ng/ml and 0.04 ng/ml in winter, respectively. but both of the two appeared 1211.5 pg/ml dnd 99.4 pg/ml of estradiol-17β, respectively. Therefore the diagnosis of pregnancy might be more accurate with the levels of es-tradiol- 17p in autumn. 3. The progesterone levels showed 3.20 ng/ml the day before parturition and less than 1 ng/ml on 8 days after partunton. The estradiol- 178 levels, showing the rising trend, are 90.1-162.4 pg/ml up to 10 days.

This study was conducted to find out the changes of estradiol-17 β and progesterone levels in the plasma occurrenoe of their puberty and during estrus cycle with 9 heads of Cheju ponies. The estradiol-17 β and progesterone in the plasma samples were assayed by radioimmunoassay methods. The results are as follow ; 1. The estradiol-17 β levels showed 45.4-93.6 pg/ml during 6-10 months of puberty, however it reached at peak of 162.6±73.77pg/ml at 13months with onset of estrus. 2. The progesterone levels during puberty of fillies reached peak levels of 8.28±4.52ng/ml at 14months and 0.01~0.36ng/ml during 6-10 months of puberty. 3. The estradiol-17 β and progesterone levels decreased to 75.1±27.26pg/ml and 1.96±2.25ng/ml respectively 16months o f puberty in the non-breeding season. 4. The estradiol-17 β levels during the estrus cycles showed a peak level of 107-145pg/ml at 1-7 days after the onset of estrus and decreased 66.1-91.9pg/ml at 11-17 days. 5. The progesterone levels during the estrus cyole showed less than Ing/ml at 1-7 days after the onset of estrus and a peak level of 7.5-7.7nglml at 11-15 days.
