Raising to Object under Multiple Spheres Hypothesis
임채경 대한언어학회 2006 언어학 Vol.14 No.1
Im, Chegyong. 2006. Raising to Object under Multiple Spheres Hypothesis. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 14(1), 273-293. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide an alternative analysis of RTO constructions based on the assumptions of Multiple Spheres Hypothesis. Adopting the CP analysis of the lower clause suggested in Bruening (2000, 2001) and Hiraiwa (2005), we argue that the so-called raised argument occupies SpecvP of matrix sentence by the rule PLACE. We also argue that if the argument discharges its [Top] feature and stays at lower SpecCp position, (i) it gets its pronominal form by the rule DRESS before PF interface in languages like English, (ii) it is normally deleted at PF in languages like Korean and Japanese. Otherwise it should find some other place, e.g., SpecvP of matrix sentence by the rule PLACE, the process of which has been traditionally called RTO.
How to Numerate and What to Compute: An Alternative Approach to Solve the Late Merge of Adjunct
임채경 대한언어학회 2009 언어학 Vol.17 No.3
The purpose of this paper is to suggest an alternative way to solve the problem of late merge of adjunct. The concepts of Numeration and Computation suggested in the Minimalism-based works should be reconsidered for the appropriate explanation of the structure. Revising Stroik and Putnam (2006)'s recent suggestion of "Survive and Remerge", we argue that adjunct is late merged under the assumption that the operation "Select" is possible all the way before Transfer.
Merge of Topic and Pronominal Apposition Construction in AAVE
임채경 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2011 언어연구 Vol.28 No.1
This paper is an attempt to explain the pronominal apposition construction in AAVE based on the Multiple Sphere Hypothesis suggested in Im (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) as well as the Merge principle suggested in van Gelderen (2006). We argue that the noun phrase followed by the pronominal subject is not moved from inside the sentence but base-generated as a topic by 3D-Merge in Ω-sphere and the Specifier Incorporation Principle. The simultaneous Merge in three spheres guarantees the licensing of the topic phrase and the pronominal subject without causing the locality problem.
