The purpose of this study was to identify the sexual characteristics of the patients treated with hemodialysis and to provide the basic information to develop the adequate nursing interventions for them. These data were obtained from married patients treated with hemodialysis regularly in six hemodialysis centers which were hospital based in Seoul and Kyung-ki-do, Korea during from July 9. to August 20. 2001. This research was a qualitative research. The data-collecting method is based on the in-depth interviews performed by the interview guide, participant observations. The following research questions were addressed. ·What do you think of your sexuality? ·How is your sexuality now? The results are as follows: 1. Changes in sexual functions were irregular menstruation, taking antihypertensives, impotence, premature ejaculation and amenorrhea. Impotence and premature ejaculation showed in male hemodialysis patients, althrough irregular menstruation showed in female hemodialysis patients. Irregular menstruation, impotence, premature ejaculation and amenorrhea showed in all hemodialysis patients taking antihypertensives. 2. Changes in sexual life were suppression of libido, improve or increase of libido, decrease of libido, pain and discomfort during intercourse, changes in sexual satisfaction, reduction in frequency of intercourse and passive attitudes. Suppression of libido, decrease of libido and reduction in frequency of intercours showed in many male hemodialysis patients. Passive attitudes, pain and discomfort during intercourse showed in female hemodialysis patients. The suppression of libido showed specially in all hemodialysis patients on hemodialysis day. 3. Psychologic and emotional changes were decline or withdraw of self confidence, depression, passive reactions and anxiety. Decline or withdraw of self-confidence, depression and anxiety showed in many male hemodialysis patients. Passive reactions showed in female hemodialysis patients. 4. Changes in spousal relationship were expression of conflict with spouse, efforts to improve spousal relationship and reduction of trustfulness. Reduction of trustfulness showed in male hemodialysis patients. The expression of conflict with spouse showed in many hemodialysis patients, but efforts to improve spousal relationship showed in a few hemodialysis patients. Based on this study's findings, we identified that the patients treated with hemodialysis were experiencing the sexual problems related to their disease and hemodialysis treatment, so nephrology nurses were needed to develop sexual education and counseling programs about sexual problems related to ESRD and hemodialysis treatment to improve the patient' s quality of life.
