        The aim of this study was to report the lung volume and the maximal voluntary ventilation of the students in the courses of physical and medical education at Chosun university. Subjects were 165 physical students and 74 medical students. The results are as follows: 1) Frequency of breath: (cycle/min, M±SD) Physical male students show 13+3.28, physical female students 17±4.88, medical male students 17+3.51, medical female students 16±4.22. The values of physical male students are represented lower than those of medical male students. There are almost no differences between the two female groups. 2) Vital capacity: (1, M±SD) Physical male students show 4.35±0.610, physical female students 3.45±0.683, medical male students 3.88±0.487, medical female students 2.64±0.318. The values of physical male and female students in common are represented significantly higher than those of medical male and female students. 3) Tidal volume: (ml, M±SD) Physical male students show 684±119, physical female students 677±198, medical male students 482±114, medical female students 468±151. The values of physical male and female students are represented considerably higher than those of medical male and female students. 4) Maximal voluntary ventilation: (1 /min, M±SD) Physical male students show 152.6+12.75, physical female students 117.4±10.24, medical male students 129.7±13.83, medical female students 93.9±11.94. The values of physical male and female students are represented significantly higher than those of medical male and female students.

        흰쥐에서 Nitric Oxide 합성 억제가 Bradykinin의 승압 및 감압효과에 미치는 영향

        Bradykinin has been known to elicit a pressor effect when administered centrally, and a depressor effect when administered peripherally. The present study was aimed at investigating whether the blood pressure response to bradykinin is dependent on the endogenous generation of nitric oxide (NO). Effects of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on the pressor and depressor responses to intracerebroventricularly and intravenously injected bradykinin (5nmol/rat), respectively, were examined in anesthetized rats. Neither the pressor response nor the depressor response was affected by acute parenteral treatment with L-NAME. The pressor and depressor effects of bradykinin were also noted in rats chronically supplemented with L-NAME in drinking water for 4 weeks. Bradykinin caused a relaxation of the isolated thoracic aorta in vitro, which was not affected in the presence of L-NAME. However, bradykinin failed to cause a relaxation of the aorta isolated from rats chronically treated with L-NAME. These findings suggest that endogenous generation of NO may not completely account for the blood pressure responses to bradykinin in rats.

        Despite the theoretical problems of the water spirometer and its poor frequency response, the water spirometer is adequate for the physiological function tests even in healthy people. We must encourage the use of the spirometer as part of routine examination of nearly all adult patients. Recently, Pulmonary function studies are widely used in evaluation of various physical condition. The aim of this study was to report the pulmonary function studies of young athletes. Subjects were 221 young athletes from 11 to 17 years of age. They were elementary school boys and girls, middle school boys and girls, high school boys and girls. The following were mainly observed for the study; frequency of breath, vital capacity, tidal volume, and breath holding time. The results obtained were summarized as follow; 1. Frequency of breath; (cycle/min. M±SD) Elementary school boys show 18±5.5, elementary school girls 19±5.0, middle school boys 17±2.3, middle school girls 17±3.0, high school boys 15±6.5, high school girls 15±5.7. 2. Vital capacity; (ℓ, M±SD) Elementary school boys show 1.63±0.138, elementary school girls 1.60±0.241, middle school boys 3.08±0.650, middle school girls 2.79±0.562, high school boys 4.24±0.545, high school girls 2.90±0.792. 3. Tidal volume; (㎖, M±SD) Elementary school boys show 393±40.7, elementary school girls 439±108, middle school boys 590±103, middle school girls 508±78.6, high school boys 727±113, high school girls 618±84. 4. Breath holding time; (sec, M±SD) Elementary school boys show 43±15.5, elementary school girls 45±15.4, middle school boys 53±9.7, middle school girls 46±9.4, high school boys 57±12.9, high school. girls 45±10.1.

They were elementary school boys and girls, middle school boys and girls, high school boys and girls, and college students. The results are as follows: 1) Frequency of breath: (cycle/min, $M{\pm}SD$) Elementary school boys show $19{\pm}4.7$, elementary school girls $22{\pm}7.9$, middle school boys $17{\pm}2.4$, middle school girls $18{\pm}8.2$, high school boys $15{\pm}3.4$, high school girls $15{\pm}9.7$, and college male students $12{\pm}3.2$. 2) Vital capacity: (1, $M{\pm}SD$) Elementary school boys show $2.60{\pm}0.480$, elementary school girls $2.22{\pm}0.412$, middle school boys $3.63{\pm}0.598$, middle school girls $2.80{\pm}0.303$, high school boys $4.70{\pm}0.487$, high school girls $3.23{\pm}0.509$, and college male students $4.30{\pm}0.608$. 3) Tidal volume: (ml, $M{\pm}SD$) Elementary school boys show $462{\pm}59$, elementary school girls $395{\pm}110$, middle school boys $524{\pm}78$, middle school girls $421{\pm}59$, high school boys $612{\pm}101$, high school girls $494{\pm}123$, and college male students $603{\pm}121$. 4) Breath holding time: (sec, $M{\pm}SD$) Elementary school boys show $58{\pm}21.2$, elementary school girls $36{\pm}11.1$, middle school boys $61{\pm}16.7$. middle school girls $53{\pm}21.0$, high school boys $64{\pm}9.1$, high school girls $49{\pm}15.3$, and college male students $81{\pm}23.0$.

        Interplay of Hydrogen Sulfide and Nitric Oxide on the Pacemaker Activity of Interstitial Cells of Cajal from Mouse Small Intestine

        We studied whether nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have an interaction on the pacemaker activities of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) from the mouse small intestine. The actions of NO and H2S on pacemaker activities were investigated by using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique and intracellular Ca2+ analysis at 30oC in cultured mouse ICC. Exogenously applied (±)-S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP),an NO donor, or sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS), a donor of H2S, showed no influence on pacemaker activity (potentials and currents) in ICC at low concentrations (10 μM SNAP and 100 μM NaHS), but SNAP or NaHS completely inhibited pacemaker amplitude and pacemaker frequency with increases in the resting currents in the outward direction at high concentrations (SNAP 100 μM and NaHS 1 mM). Co-treatment with 10 μM SNAP plus 100 μM NaHS also inhibited pacemaker amplitude and pacemaker frequency with increases in the resting currents in the outward direction. ODQ, a guanylate cyclase inhibitor, or glibenclamide, an ATP-sensitive K+ channel inhibitor,blocked the SNAP+NaHS-induced inhibition of pacemaker currents in ICC. Also, we found that SNAP+NaHS inhibited the spontaneous intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) oscillations in cultured ICC. In conclusion, this study describes the enhanced inhibitory effects of NO plus H2S on ICC in the mouse small intestine. NO+H2S inhibited the pacemaker activity of ICC by modulating intracellular Ca2+. These results may be evidence of a physiological interaction of NO and H2S in ICC for modulating gastrointestinal motility.
