Fra Angelico(1395-1455), a Renaissance Florentine painter and a friar of the Order of Preachers, executed three sacra conversazione altarpieces in the mid-fifteenth century, all commissioned by Cosimo de’ Medici(1389-1464). Art historians celebrate these paintings as the earliest cases of so-called sacra conversazione iconography, which represents the Virgin and the Child accompanied by a group of saints in a unified perspectival space. On the other hand, the significance and function of these altarpieces and how they reflect the religious motivations of their patron, Cosimo de" Medici, was not fully explored by the former studies. This article, therefore, attempts to read the three sacra conversazione altarpieces from the viewpoint of the patron by analyzing them in their contemporary surroundings. Despite their common iconographic features, the three sacra conversazione altarpieces of Fra Angelico were intended to serve different purposes for the patron and his family. The three altarpieces seem to have expressed Cosimo’s caring for his father, himself, and his son, chronologically. All three of these altarpieces reflect Cosimo’s personal and devotional intents rather than public and political motivations to show off his family’s power and authority to contemporary Florentines.
