        돌고래 공연 풀에서 해파리 자상에 의한 피부상해

        Cutaneous injuries stung by jellyfish are not uncommon in human exposed to marine environments. Most of the cases occur to scuba divers, fishermen, and travelers swimming at the beach. The symptoms vary from mild dermatosis to fatal systemic reaction. Some group of jellyfish like Atlantic Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis)provokes acute severe skin injuries with systemic symptoms of nausea, bradycardia, and rarely anaphylaxis. But it is unusual case that allergic dermatitis caused by Scyphistoma which is polyp stage of jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) happened to zoo keepers working at indoor dolphin pool. This case report is about dermatosis with symptoms such as painful,irritant, itching, and erupted skin lesions on the neck and face of zoo keepers working at dolphinarium in Seoul zoo, Korea.

        Avian Pox Infection in a Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius) in Korea

        A Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) with lethargy, dyspnea, and poor physical condition was rescued and referred to the Animal Health Center, Seoul Zoo, Korea. The jay’s eyelids were sealed with dark-colored hard scabs and it died the day after arrival. At necropsy, diphtheritic membranes on the tongue and oral mucosa were apparent, suggesting avian poxvirus infection based on the appearance of the oral diphtheritic lesions. PCR was conducted using a tissue sample to confirm the causative agent. The jay was diagnosed with an avian pox viral infection. This report describes the first case of a natural avian pox infection in a Eurasian jay in Korea.

        Nephrolithiasis in an Aged Snow Leopard

        An aged (14 years old) female snow leopard exhibited renal calculi and pyelonephritis at necropsy. Theanimal experienced appetite loss, mild diarrhea, polydipsia, and difficulty breathing, and was curled up and staggeringon its hind legs 2 days before death. Large calculi were found obstructing both sides of the renal pelvis. The leftsidecalculus was larger than that of the right side. These calculi had rough surfaces and were 15 × 21 mm and9 × 14 mm, respectively. The bladder was filled with dark, cloudy urine. Multiple ulcerous lesions were found in theinner layer of the bladder. Enterococcus faecalis and Proteus mirabili were identified via microbiological examinationof the urine. Under microscopic examination, urine struvites were observed in the pyuria sediment in the bladder. Toour knowledge, this is the first documented case of nephrolithiasis in a captive snow leopard.

        Rhododendron Poisoning in Sheep and Goats

        Four sheep and five Korean native goats became intoxicated after eating Rhododendron schlippenbachii clippings that a ranchman threw into the animal barn. The clinical signs included loss of appetite, lethargy, nausea, salivation, vomiting, dyspnea, staggering gait, and bradycardia. The animals were treated with atropine and carbo-pulbit. One goat died 8 hours later, and a field postmortem revealed a considerable quantity of rhododendron leaves in the rumen. The other sheep and goats recovered within 3 days after treatment.

        Dermatitis Caused by Candida albicans in a Captive Spotted Seal (Phoca largha)

        Candidiasis caused by Candida albicans is a localized mucocutaneous disease. It occurs worldwide in variouskinds of animals. A 7-year-old male spotted seal weighing 98 kg showed facial skin lesions. The present case wascharacterized by erythematous, thickened, and alopecic skin lesions in the periocular region and on the commissureof the lower lip. For diagnosis, skin scraping and culture of samples from the facial skin lesions were done. Colonieswere cream-colored and glistening after 3 days of culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar. Typical yeast-like cells wereobserved by microscopic inspection after Gram staining. Recovery was achieved with itraconazole (1 mg/kg SID) for7 days, repeated three times at 2-week intervals.

        Polycystic Kidney Disease in the Adult Female Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis)

        Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is characterized by multiple cysts within the renal parenchyma and is acommon heritable disease in humans, dogs, and cats. However, a few cases of PKD have been described in captivepygmy hippopotamuses. Bilateral PKD was observed in a 33-year-old, 198-kg female pygmy hippopotamus duringits necropsy in Seoul Zoo on 15 January 2013. The diagnosis of PKD was confirmed by gross findings andhistopathological examination. One kidney was slightly enlarged, and the lower portion of other kidney contained alarge cyst filled with light yellow, watery fluid. Both kidneys had numerous, variably sized fluid-filled cysts of 2 to20 mm in diameter. Considerable portions of the renal cortex and medulla were replaced by cysts. Microscopic inspectionshowed that the cysts were lined with low cuboidal to flat epithelial cells. The present case report of PKD in a pygmyhippopotamus is the first in Korea.

        Renal Adenocarcinoma in a California Sea Lion (Zalophus Californianus)

        A 25-year-old female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) died after a history of depression, loss of appetite, weakness and weight loss. At necropsy, multifocal to coalescing, tan to white, firm nodules, ranging from 0.5 to 3 cm in diameter were observed throughout both kidneys. Renal adenocarcinoma metastasis to the liver, spleen and small intestine was diagnosed based on gross and histopathological findings. To the best our knowledge, this is the first reported case in Korea, and understanding this case will support management and diagnosis of future cases of renal adenocarcinoma in California sea lions.

        한우 송아지의 성장에 따른 혈액화학치에 관한 연구

        Blood chemistry values according to ages have rarely been investigated in indigenous Korean calves. The present study aimed to clarify the changes in blood chemistry values of indigenous Korean calves with age. Blood samples were collected from 29 calves (11 females and 18 males) reared at the Gyeongsangbukdo Livestock Research Institute and the levels of various chemical components in the serum were analyzed. The total protein, albumin and globulin concentration in the calves increased gradually over time. The glucose concentration increased significantly at 2 weeks after birth, and then decreased slightly 4 weeks after birth. The blood urea nitrogen concentration increased from 2 weeks after birth, and the levels in females were higher than those in males at 2 and 4 weeks after birth. The creatinine concentration decreased significantly from 2 weeks after birth, and the levels in females were higher than those in males at 2 weeks and 6 months after birth. The total bilirubin concentration decreased gradually from 2 weeks after birth. The glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase concentration increased gradually from 2 weeks after birth. The triglyceride concentration tended to increase from 2 weeks after birth. The total cholesterol concentration increased significantly at 2 weeks after birth, and then decreased slightly 4 weeks after birth. The total high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration increased significantly from 2 weeks after birth. The calcium concentration was maintained between 9.8 ± 0.8 mg/dL and 11.6 ± 0.9 mg/dL throughout the investigation period, although some levels fluctuated at 4 weeks and 6 months after birth. The phosphorus concentration increased significantly at 2 weeks after birth, and then decreased slightly 4 weeks after birth. In conclusion, the data obtained from this study may be valuable for use as a standard for interpreting results of blood biochemical analyses in indigenous Korean calves.

        경북지역 돼지의 바이러스성 유사산 원인조사

        A total of 170 litters (575 samples) of aborted and stillbirth fetuses submitted to the Gyeongsangbuk-Do Veterinary Service Laboratory (GVSL) between January 2006 and December 2010 from pig farms in Gyeongbuk province were studied to identify porcine abortion- and stillbirth-associated viruses such as Porcine parvovirus (PPV),Encephalomyocarditis Virus (EMCV), Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV), and Aujeszky's Disease Virus (ADV). Virus was not detected by PCR in 36 litters, but viral antibody was detected by HI and ELISA in 93 litters. The majority of etiological viruses were PPV (67 litters,39.4%), EMCV (50 litters, 29.4%), PRRSV (15 litters, 8.8%), and JEV (11 litters, 6.5%); ADV was not detected by either PCR or ELISA. Single infection occurred in 52 litters (30.6%), co-infection occurred in 41 litters (24.1%),and unknown cases with no detection of any of the five viruses occurred in 77 litters (45.3%).

        A Study on Diagnosis of the Fertility of one Aged Female Gorilla by using the Fecal Sex Hormone Metabolites

        The aim of this study was to diagnose the fertility of a female western lowland gorilla kept in Seoul Zoo, in accordance with age by analyzing the fecal sex hormone metabolites. The study was conducted in two period of times, when the animal was from 35 to 37 years old and when the animal was from 40 to 42 years old. Non-invasive method by using fecal samples was used for safe and efficient fertility diagnosis. We collected the feces from the enclosure at least three times a week. Then 17β-estradiol and progesterone, which are fecal sex hormone metabolites, were measured by time-resolved fluoro-immunoassay to compare the menstruation cycle and the annual reproductive cycle. For the duration of the primary study (when the animal was 35~37 years old), irregular menstruation and high concentrations of estradiol and progesterone were observed. However, menstruation was hardly observed and the concentrations of both hormones were statistically very low in the period of secondary study (when the animal was 40~42 years old). This observed phenomenon in our study was very comparable to menopause in adult women; therefore, it was confirmed that our female gorilla has reached menopause because of the natural aging, as they become older.
