Numerical study of particle dispersion from a power plant chimney

Shim, Jeongbo,You, Donghyun Korean Association for Particle and Aerosol Resear 2017 Particle and Aerosol Research Vol.13 No.4

An Eulerian-Lagrangin approach is used to compute particle dispersion from a power plant chimney. For air flow, three-dimensional incompressible filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a subgrid-scale model by integrating the Newton's equation, while the dispersed phase is solved in a Lagrangian framework. The velocity ratios between crossflow and a jet of 0.455 and 0.727 are considered. Flow fields and particle distribution of both cases are evaluated and compared. When the velocity ratio is 0.455, it demonstrates a Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex structure above the chimney caused by the interaction between crossflow and a jet, whereas the other case shows flow structures at the top of the chimney collapsed by fast crossflow. Also, complex wake structures cause different particle distributions behind the chimney. The case with the velocity ratio of 0.727 demonstrates strong particle concentration at the vortical region, whereas the case with the velocity ratio of 0.455 shows more dispersive particle distribution. The simulation result shows similar tendency to the experimental result.

In the 21st century, Japan strengthened Dokdo education in elementary and secondary school social studies as part of its claim to Dokdo, and Korea also strengthened Dokdo education. The purpose of this study is to identify the perception of Korean and Japanese pre-service teachers, who received Dokdo education during this period, about Dokdo. The results indicate that the Dokdo issue has an adverse effect on the image of the other country. Preservice teachers in both countries have a lot of memories of Dokdo from the classes in middle school social studies and geography. Regarding territorial rights, Korean students answered that Dokdo is Korean territory with 100%, while Japanese ones stayed at 70.5%. Both students think that the Dokdo issue would hinder future bilateral relations. To solve this problem, Korean students valued evidence-based Dokdo education, and Japanese students did dialogue between Korean and Japan. In addition, both students have a common understanding that the history of Dokdo is important in social studies classes.

The purpose of the study is to examine the features by exploring the origin of Pestalozzi`s educational thought which was introduced to the geographic education of the modern Korea. Pestalozzi`s educational theory, as a western pedagogy, was first introduced in the modern Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Education in the 1870`s delegated three students to the college of education in the United States in order to investigate educational policies and institutions. Hideo Takamine among them studied teacher education, Pestalozzi`s thought, etc. in the Oswego College of Education in New York. After his return from abroad, he worked as principal of the Tokyo teacher institution. His student, Torasaburo Wakabayashi, put Pestalozzi`s teaching methods into practice. In 1883, Torasaburo Wakabayashi published 『Revised teaching methods(Kaihatsu Kyouju Jutsu)』 using Pestalozzi`s teaching methods by subject and 『Elementary Geography(Chiri Shougaku)』which is an innovative geographic textbook. He emphasized the use of intuition, observation, question and answer, and visual materials and maps.

Vol.29 No.1

The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions and images of Japan in geography textbooks for elementary and secondary schools published after Korea’s independence from Japanese colonies. Japan described in the world geography textbooks for elementary and secondary schools in modern and contemporary Korea has both positive and negative images depending on the political situation. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the most negative images of Japan were found in geography textbooks in Korea at that time. These include the narrow insularism, the savage culture and belligerence, the expansion of territory and the war of aggression, and the invasion of the peace line surrounding Dokdo. In addition, they criticized Japan's aggression and described them as something to be wary of. As such, the description of negative content against Japan reflects the Koreans' anger against Japanese colonial rule immediately after independence. Also, the political conflict over sovereignty over Dokdo between Korea and Japan affected the descrption of geography textbooks.

Simulations as educational methods are encouraged in the Korea curriculum of geography education. However, simulations applied lesson cases are rarely applied to schools. Simulations in geography education include virtual industry, commerce, settlement location, selection of a traffic route, etc. In the current study, middle school students are asked to select the best railroad among four from the Osong Station to Gangwon-do province for X-axis high speed railroad construction. To select the railroad, construction expenses and benefits are both asked students to consider. As a result, Osong, Chungju Jecheon, Wonju, Pyeongchang, and Gangneung are selected as the best railroad. Simulation-based learning also enhanced students competencies such as exploration, problem-solving and decision-making, higher-order thinking, and collaboration.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the designated process and the characteristics of a new compulsory subject “Chiri Sogo” (tentative name which means comprehensive geography), in Japanese high schools. In the Japanese high schools, the completion rate of geography was reduced dramatically due to “Gendai Syakai” (modern society) and “Sekaishi” (world history) being designated as mandatory at the end of the 1970s and in the late 1980s each. As a result, geographers have felt crisis since the mid and late 1990s. Since 2003, geographers have been involved in various activities such as promoting and studying the social importance of geography, centered on the Association of Japanese Geographers. Geography researchers also participated in the Science Council of Japan and made useful suggestions for reforming geography education. Finally, with the constant efforts of the geographers, “Chiri Sogo” was designated as a new compulsory subject in the high school curriculum in March 2018. This subject emphasizes the creation of a sustainable society from global and local perspectives. The key words of this subject are map, GIS, ESD, and disaster prevention. The instructional method of the subject is theme-oriented inquiry learning.

A Vol.27 No.5A

Upper slab has normally been assumed as a simple beam when uniformly distribute loads under DB load are transformed into an equivalent uniformly distributed load. It is thus added in the present technical note that upper slab can also be assumed as a beam with fixed restraint at both ends. In line with the above, soil depth is firstly divided into three groups. For each group of soil depth, equivalent uniformly distributed load is calculated in term of four different span lengths for a rigid frame bridge. The larger equivalent load is selected amongst the loads under a simple beam and a fixed-ends beam.

Japan’s insistence on the sovereignty of Dokdo has always influenced geography textbooks in Korea and Japan as a sensitive political issue. This study examines the contents of Dokdo depicted in elementary and secondary school geography textbooks and school atlases published in Korea and Japan before and after the San Francisco Peace Treaty. With Korea’s independence after World War II, Dokdo became the territory of Korea. At that time, Dokdo was described as a Korean territory in Korea’s elementary and secondary school geography textbooks, but not in Japan. As the phrase “Reversion of Dokdo” on the San Francisco Peace Treaty in September 1951 was excluded, President Syngman Rhee, in January 1952, declared the Peace Line to protect Korea’s fishing industry and Dokdo. In that period, Dokdo was described evidently as a territory to be protected in Korean geography textbooks. In Japan, on the other hand, only a small number of maps were included in the secondary school atlases, which mark Dokdo as a Japanese territory. That indicates Korea’s strong willingness to adhere to Dokdo, reflected in geography textbooks and school atlases.

While debates over the names of the East Sea and the Sea of Japan continue between Korea and Japan, researchers have studied the geographical names of the seas between the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese islands, focusing on old documents, old maps, and geography textbooks. However, no research has has analyzed the geographical names of the East Sea in the lyrics of school songs. From this perspective, the purpose of the study is to clarify the geographical name of the East Sea and the expected concepts of talent in the elementary and secondary school songs in the east coast region of Korea. The results of the study include: first, a human being with a clear, blue and wide mind like the East Sea, second, a hard worker who greets the sunrise on the East Sea, third, Koreans who overcome a fierce wave of the East Sea and fourth, fostering school spirit based on the beautiful scenery of the East Sea. In this way, the East Sea geographical name has been used in the school songs for a long time, and Korean sentiment is melted in it. The geographical name of the East Sea which contains Korean identity should be preserved as a cultural heritage.

Vol.25 No.2

The purpose of this study is to examine the justification of education for sustainable development in relation to the geography curriculum in order to improve the position of geography in Japanese high schools. The Japanese geography education community puts a new compulsory subject “Chiri Sogo” in high schools as a result of efforts for the revival of geography. They emphasized that geography education could meet national and social needs, especially its contribution to education for sustainable development, a subject of crosscurriculum. The Japanese geography education community is actively introducing the Global Action Program on Education for Sustainable Development and Education for Sustainable Development and the Lucerne Declaration on Geography Education for Sustainable Development to create a new geographical term called ‘Creating a sustainable society’ and to form one axis of the main content of the subject “Chiri Sogo”. This study examined the background, tasks and contents of the proposals for ‘Creating sustainable society’ in the Japanese geography education community, and then explored how these are projected in the Japanese 2018 curriculum guidelines.
