Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by the interaction of multiple mediators, especially cytokines. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a proinflammatory cytokine and has been shown to be involved in RA. This study explored the association of the MIF gene polymorphism with RA in Korean. Methods: 114 patients with RA, and 114 age and gender matched healthy controls were studied. Patients and controls were genotyped for a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 5`-flanking region at position -173 of the MIF gene. Results: No significant differences in MIF gene polymorphism were observed in RA compared to healthy controls. No association with disease severity was detected for the MIF gene polymorphism. Conclusion: MIF -173 G/C polymorphism did not appear to be associated with genetic susceptibility and disease severity in Korean RA patients.

Glycosidase inhibitors from urine of Bombyx mori were isolated and their inhibitory activities on glycosidases were evaluated. Six compounds were isolated by using several ion exchange columns, and their chemical structures were identified by the physicochemical and spectral data. Compound IV, V and VI were identified as 1-deoxynojirimycin, fagomine and 1,4-dideoxy-1,4-imino-D-arabinitol, respectively. Among six compounds isolated, 1-deoxynojirimycin(IV) was the most potent inhibitor on α-glucosidase and β-galactosidase of rat intestine, and its inhibitory activities for trehalase and almond β-glucosidase were relatively weak. Compound V and VI retained a little inhibitory potency toward α-glucosidase and β-galactosidase. Compound II and III, however, have been found to have no effect on all glycosidases tested in this study.

Jeong Chae-bong is remembered as a fairy tale writer that contributed to the establishment of the high status of the Korean children's literature through his marvelous works of great artistic values. Until he passed on due to his chronic disease in 2001, he continued writing stories for children battling cancer ferociously, which proves how passionate he was about children's stories body and soul. His works too prove that he poured a great amount endeavor to express the world of innocent and beautiful children's mind in his stories. He offered the chance for the modern people to realize the importance of life and nature in the worldly and material society through a harmony between his lyrical and succinct sentences and fantasy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the internal characteristics of his fairy tales by analyzing his works in terms of theme. The scope was limited to 100 short fairy tales that were judged to fit elementary school students. The basic beginning stage, Chapter II reviewed his birth, growing, activities, and consciousness as a writer. The data revealed that his literature started from 'children's mind,' The major discussions and findings of Chapter III were as follows: the themes of his fairy tales included virtues of love and mercy, realization of children's mind, reorganization of legends and historical mind, interest in the separation and unification of two Koreas, and critical depiction of absurd situations. The theme of virtue of love and mercy was presented by the characters that overcame given situations with love for mankind or realized love through sacrifices. The children's mind was suggested as a practical means to lead a truthful and sincere life.

The inhibitory activities of Amberlite active fraction, which was obtained from methanol soluble fraction of freeze dried slikworm urine, on the rat intestinal glycosidase-catalyzed enzymatic reaction were examined in in vitro a vivo experiments. Amberlite active fraction showed significant inhibitory effects on the hydrolysis of cosidic bond, especially α-1,4 bond. On the other hand, the inhibition on the hydrolysis of β-glycosiaic bond was very weak. Oral administration of Amberlite active fraction resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in the blood glucose after an oral maltose load, and postprandial hyperglycemia in carbohydrate-loaded mice was suppressed by Amberlite active fraction at 60 mg/kg in decreasing order of maltose, starch, sucrose and lactose. 60 mg/kg of Amberlite active fraction lowered the blood glucose level markedly after 18, 35, and 60 min after an oral maltose load and the antihyperglycemic activity was maintained upto 90 min. In alloxan-induced hyperglycemic mice, Amberlite active fraction at a dose of 100 mg/kg also significantly lowered blood glucose after an oral maltose load, and its efficacy was almost equivalent to that of acarbose.
