특집논문 : 과학기술과 휴머니즘 ; 현대 학문 체계에서 철학의 위치

"인문학의 위기", "이공계의 위기", "기초 과학의 위기" 등이 널리 논의되는 와중에서 최근 현대 학문체계에 관한 근본적 반성을 촉구하는 동료 철학자들이 속속 등장하고 있다. 그러나 아직도 대다수의 철학자들은 학문 체계 또는 학문 분류 문제를 도서관의 사서들이나 과학정책의 실무자들에게 더 잘 어울리는 것으로 치부해 버리고 있는지도 모른다. 필자는 이글에서 현대 학문 체계에서 철학의 위치를 물음으로써 철학자들에게 다시 한 번 이 문제에 주의를 환기하고자 한다. 이를 위해 제 2절에서 퍼스의 학문분류표를 조감하고, 제 3절에서 프리드만의 논의에 기반하여 과학과 철학의 관계에 관한 여러 가지 모델들을 살펴보며, 제 4절에서는 그런 논의들로부터 얻어진 교훈들을 반추해보고자 한다. Recently we can witness more number of philosophers soliciting fundamental reflections on contemporary classification of sciences in the middle of the chaos in which "the crisis of humanities", "the crisis of natural science and engineering", and "the crisis of basic sciences" are widely debated. Nevertheless, most philosophers might delegate the problem of the system or the classification of science to librarians or science policy makers. I shall once again draw attention of the philosophers to this problem by asking the place of philosophy in the contemporary system of sciences. For this purpose, I will review Peirce`s classification of science (section 2), examine several models of the relation between science and philosophy based on Friedman`s discussion (section 3), and reflect upon the lessons from such an examination (section 4).

스코투스가 [제일 원리론]에서 본질적으로 질서 지워진 원인들의 공리체계를 구성하고 그 체계의 궁극적 정리로서 신 존재 증명을 제시했다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 인과론에 있어서 스코투스의 독창성이 두드러진 문제 영역으로 우리는 우선 (1) 본질적으로 질서 지워진 원인들, (2) 자동자, (3) 공-인과성을 쉽게 떠올릴 수 있다. 이 문제들 각각에서 스코투스는 그 이전의 어떤 철학자나 철학의 유파 내지 사조와 대화를 나누었던 것일까? 이 문제들이 서로 밀접히 삼투하고 있다는 데는 의문의 여지가 없다고 한다면, 이것들에 대한 스코투스의 해답들은 또한 여하히 삼투하고 있는 것일까? 이 논문은 본질적으로 질서 지워진 원인들의 체계를 구성하려는 스코투스의 전략의 내용과 동기를 짐작해 보려는 데 그 목표를 둔다. It is well-known that Scotus constructs an axiomatic system of essentially ordered causes, and presents a proof of the existence of God as the ultimate theorem of that system in his Tractatus de primo principio. The problem areas in the theory of causation, where Scotus` originality is most salient, may be (1) essentially ordered causes, (2) self-movers, (3) co-causality. In each of these problems, with which philosopher or philosophical school or tradition is Scotus confronting? If there is no doubt that these problems are closely intertwined, how are the solutions of Scotus of these interconnected themselves? This article aims at fathoming the contents and the motivations of Scotus` strategy in building the system of essentially ordered causes.

What role and function did Suarez play in the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern period? In order to solve the problem of modernity of Suarez, we need to employ more imaginative metaphor. With said in mind, I will focus on three areas. First of all, how Suarez attempted to revise Aquinas" thought will be investigated. In addition, the role and function of Suarez played in the so-called Suarezianization of Aquinas, especially in the problem of the status of Aquinas, will be outlined. Finally, the paper will discuss Suarez"s role in problems related to the internal senses.

아퀴나스의 물질적 단일자에 대한 인식의 문제는 중세 인식론의 역사에서 가장 치열하게 논의되어 온 문제들 가운데 하나이다. 이는 부분적으로 알러스나 데이처럼 몇몇 학자들이 그 문제를 토마스의 체계 전체를 통해 가장 취약한 지점으로 취급했다는 사실에 기인한다. 알러스와 데이의 의견을 검토하고 나서 필자는 인간 지성의 고유 대상의 문제를 통해 물질적 단일자들의 불가지성의 근원의 문제를 논의할 것이다. 필자는 이 문제들을 적절하게 논의하기 위해서는 물질적 단일자 내에 현존하는 하성(何性)에 대한 인식의 문제와 물질적 단일자에 대한 인식의 문제의 구별이 중요하다는 점을 시사할 것이다. 이 구별을 전제하고서 아퀴나스 자신의 해결책이 그 자신의 문제를 다루기에 충분할 만큼 아주 교묘하다는 점을 보일 것이다. 다시 말해서, 물질적 단일자에 대한 인식의 문제는 몇몇 주석가들의 주장처럼 아퀴나스에게만 특별히 야기되는 문제가 아니다. Aquinas’ problem of knowledge of material singulars is one of the most heatedly discussed problems in the history of medieval epistemology. That is partly due to the fact that some scholars such as Allers and Day have treated the problem as the weakest spot in the entire Thomistic system. After having examined Allers’ and Day’s opinions, I shall discuss the problem of the root of the unintelligibility of material singulars via the problem of the proper object of the human intellect. I shall suggest that it is important to distinguish between the knowledge of the quiddity existing in material singulars and the knowledge of material singulars in order to discuss these problems properly. With this distinction, it will be shown that Aquinas’ own solution is ingenious enough to handle his own question. In other words, the problem of knowledge of material singulars is not parochial to Aquinas, as some commentators claim.
