Rule Extraction from Neural Networks : Enhancing the Explanation Capability

This paper presents a rule extraction algorithm RE to acquire explicit rules from trained neural networks. The validity of extracted rules . has been confirmed using 6 different data sets. Based on experimental results, we conclude that extracted rules from RE predict more accurately and robustly than neural networks themselves and rules obtained from an inductive learning algorithm do. Rule extraction algorithms for neural networks are important for incorporating knowledge obtained from trained networks into knowledge based systems. In lieu of this, the proposed RE algorithm contributes to the trend toward developing hybrid and versatile knowledge-based systems including expert systems and knowledge-based decision support systems.

This thesis is a study on kim, So-wol's poetics to investigate into chara- cter of Korean modern literature. Kim's poetics agreed with ideas of roma- nticism which ideas esteemed personality and would realize a perfection of self. These ideas were coincided with the conciousness of Korean people of the times. At the time, new value system of spirit were required in Korea, owing to falling Korean dynasty that maintained Confucian order, marked ideas of classism. The western trend of literature were a stimulant to Korean literature, not a matter transplant into it. Accordingly, the author deny the theory of dis- continuity of tradition in Korean literature. This thesis is an essay. So it leaves some subjects to study on the genera- lity of the theory.

Kim Uk introduced the western literary theory into Korea in the early period of Korean modern literature. The author attempted to investigate into character of korean modern literature by studing on kim's poetiecs. He, especially, introduced romanticism and symbolism, Which ideas were coincided with the conciousness of Korean people of the times. At the time, new value system of spirit were required in Korea, owing to falling Korean dynasty that marked classism. So, romanticism and symbolism, were accepted readily and developed, which ideas esteemed personality and would realize a perfection of self. The western trend of literature were a stimulant to Korean literature, not a matter transplant into it. Accordingly, the author deny the theory of discontinuity of tradition in Korean literature. But there is some subjects to reflect in accepting other culture. This thesis is an essay. So it leaves some subjects to study on the generality of the theory.

This thesis is a study on a spiritual backgroud of Korean modern poetry. Korean modern poetry appeared as reaction upon the literary consciousness of Korean dynasty that maintianed Confucian order. Confucianism set the reason and the pattern before everything. It was positive in denying the individuality and the creativity. New value system of spirit was required in Korea owing to falling Korean dynasty that marked classism. So modern consciousness appeared. The modern consciousness valued individuality and personality. Individualism was contrary to Confucianism. It had a great influence to Korean modern poets. They held individuality, personality and feeling in esteem. Korean modern poetry marked romantic and lyrical trend, for they were formed with the individualism for a background.

Kim Gi-Rim, as Known as a poet and a literary theorist, wrote three short stories. They are <The document of prosperity>, <A certain life> and <The area along the railway>. This thesis is a study on them, for researching his literary results. This author studied on four topics about them. First, his recognition of actuality based in his works, 2nd the characters, 3rd, the literary style, and 4th whether <The area along the railway> is a medium length story or not. As the result, the author draw a conclusion following below from his works. Kim was concerned about destitution and abuse that was brought social industrialization during colonial period. In fictions, the recognition is connected with colonial situation, but not in his poetry. He held solutions to the problem in suspense with creating effete character in his works. He possessed a sensuous, novel literary style. In this connection, We would affirm the similarity between his verse and prose. Beside, he made the best use of provincial dialect in dialogue. 4th topic is a problem awaiting to be studied more. The studies on Kim, after this, should be advanced in studying the connection with his works in various genre.

The purpose of this study is to examine the diction of Korean modern poetry. Lee Kwang-su(李光洙), Kim, Uk(金億), Ju, Yo-han(朱耀翰), Kim, So-wul(金素月) were selected as models and their literature was also divided into the starting, the groping, and the muturing phase. The diction of each phase were examined from three angles. Lee, Kwang-su, in the starting phase, wrote his works in a literary style by that time and didn't have the modern conception of language. Kin Uk and Ju, Yo-han, in the groping phase, had the modernc onception of language and got the use of common language and the purely Korean language expanded, but their attempt was flat. Ideology and statement also remained still in their works. Kim, So-wul, in the muturing phase, overcame these phases and wrote his poem in a colloquail, common language and used newlycoined words. It was not until his works that real modernization of the Korea language in poetry was achieved and category of language was largely expanded.
