The influx of innovation is urgently required to the fiber(textile) engineering education in Korea. In this review, we analyzed the present situation of both the industrial (engineering) ecosystem and the engineering education, and forecasted the direction where the fiber engineering education is going on. Rapid changes such as an increase in income level, a decrease in birth-rate, and reshaping the human lifestyle are taking place in Korea. Continuous improvement is required to the contents and the objectives of engineering education in each program. There are some serious problems for most of the students in universities, including a reduction in the credits for graduation, numerical decrease in entrance as well as graduation, the longer duration in universities, the increase in the unemployment ratio, the paradigm shift in education environment. To cope with the tremendous changes in industrial (engineering) ecosystem, we suggest that an expansion of using convergence technology, specialization for differentiation in education, improvement of educational content, and selective induction of an engineering accreditation system with the help of academic society are inevitable for the sustain-ability of fiber (textile) engineering education.

N-pentyl chitosan was prepared by the reaction with n-butyl aldehyde using different n-butyl aldehyde/chitosan ratio. Degree of substitution ($\%$) to amino group in chitosan gradually increased from 45.2 to 99.5 mol$\%$ for the n-butyl aldehyde/chitosan ratio from 1 to 5. The N-pentyl chitosan showed lower water contact angle and water retention value than original chitosan, indicating its higher hydrophobicity. From the evaluation of bonding strength with porcine skin, the N-pentyl chitosan showed higher bonding strength. This suggests that the hydrophobic interaction as well as the hydrophilic interaction plays an important role in bioadhesion.

Natural colorants are regarded as substitutes for synthetic colorants in the fields of fiber dyeing, hair dyeing, cosmetic, and food industries. The use of natural colorants has been increased in view of global environment and sustainability. However, scientific approach to the production is required because the supply of natural colorants depends on the climate, soil, and cultivation methods. This brief review contains the advances in science and technology related to natural colorants including characterization, analysis, CIEL<sup>*</sup>a<sup>*</sup>b<sup>*</sup> and Munsell color systems, and future prospects. For the characterization and the analysis of natural colorants, chromatography, some spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis, FT-IR, NMR), mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction are generally used.
키토산이 한지의 색상과 문양 형성에 미치는 효과: 양파껍질 색소를 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to develop the technique for imparting pattern effect on Hanji paper with high quality using mordanting and chitosan printing. For dyeing, onion skin was re-utilized. The effect of chitosan printing on color and pattern formation were investigated. Also, colorfastness to light was evaluated for practical application of end products such as wall papers, package materials, paper crafts, etc. The results suggested that chitosan printing with onion skin dyeing was effective to pattern formation. Although dye uptake was not increased by chitosan printing treatment, there was sufficient color difference (ΔE*) so that patterns were clearly distinguished to have tone on tone color effect. Chitosan printing treatment increased the light fastness of dyed Hanji wall paper. It was confirmed the possibility to develop high quality Hanji wall papers with various color tones and patterns by applying chitosan printing and natural dyeing.
